October 12th, 2017: Well, I'm a step further! The missus and I both decided we could afford to buy ourselves something this payday, as neither of us have spent money on ourselves in a while. I'd originally planned to buy a PC Engine interface for my Multi Game Doctor backup unit, but ultimately decided against it... I'm trying to spend less time in front of electronic devices and more time with my family and the outdoors. Instead, I ordered a 20" rear wheel for my folding bike. Rather than hold out for a wheel with an internal geared hub (as mentioned last update), I've decided to build a single-speed bike instead. I have a 44t chainring on the bike right now, and after consulting the late Sheldon Brown's online gear calculator, am going with a 13t cog on the freewheel. It seems to be the optimal gearing, although I'm going to order a 56t chainring and 12t and 14t cogs as well, just so I can experiment with different gear ratios. I'll dial it in one way or the other! After that, it's just a matter of buying tubes, tires, new cotters for the cranks, and bearings for the front wheel, and then my bike will be roadworthy. Then I can start customizing...
