September 5th, 2017: As I was saying yesterday, I'm making a more conscious effort to stay (actively) engaged with/in the Usenet, Gopher, and BBS worlds. I much prefer their relative simplicity compared to the more "consumable" internet (web, social media apps, et cetera). I'm on the Usenet virtually every day, reading through what few articles pique my interest. A few groups still have active discussions, and others (alt.cyperpunk, for example) are starting to wake up thanks to returning "regs". Some groups contain nothing but crossposted spam and/or the ramblings of racist (and probably mentally ill) partisans, but that's what killfiles are for. As for the BBS world, I was on a few Telnet BBSes a couple of years ago, but these days I'm on one: Sursum Corda BBS, a family friendly board with Catholic leanings. It's not bad, but there's more out there. I'm going to try a few more to see who and what is out there, and try to participate more... rather than just download my QWK packets and move on. The Gopher world has really taken off again, with phlogs gaining in popularity. This is what inspired me to post again, knowing there's a growing community and therefore a growing audience. There's even a Phlog Aggregator now, a sort of Gopher RSS, which I thought was a great idea. I discovered a couple of phlogs I'd have otherwise missed! I'll put a link to the aggregator on my main page soon. I'm just hoping that the majority of these new phlogs will stick around, and last more than a couple of posts...
