October 3rd, 2018: Sometime in August, I signed up for SDF's Dialup service. I wanted a semi-private connection to SDF for my systems without VPN capabilities, and figured, "What the Hell, I have free long distance!". I have yet to get it to work, authentication failing every time regardless of which number I call. Probably something I've screwed up, but if I can't figure it out, I'll ask for help on bboard. My other reason for doing this was to get my Powerbook Duo 280 online without having to resort to a Localtalk bridge. It wouldn't be hard to do, but it derails my plan of keeping my Duo as a standalone unit. So, I'll do what I can to get dialup working. In the meantime, I enjoyed a bit of oldschool BBSing on the Duo. I called one of the (very) few BBSes that still have a dial-up connection: Sursum Corda BBS. The call dropped a few times, but I was able to keep a steady connection after a few tries. ANSI menus and art displayed properly, and everything worked as it should. The only thing that would keep me from BBSing with the Duo fulltime is the lack of a decent QWK or Bluewave offline mail program. I've tried every one I could find, but none measured up. Either the interface was not intuitive, or the program timed out after a couple of weeks (with no way to register). Maybe I'm just spoiled by Multimail...
