March 13th, 2018: I've been taking a mental inventory of my remaining computer systems, trying to remember which ones I still have, which ones still work, and which ones need work. Thankfully, I only have a few computers that are non-functional: My MSX2 with dead video, my Sparcserver 20 with the wrong BootPROM, and my old Thinkpad (D80?) that needs to be put back together assuming I still have all the pieces. The MSX2 is one of my retro-gaming machines, so I'm rather keen to get it going again. I've made an investment in hardware and games in the five years I've owned it, so I'm not about to toss it out. The Sparcserver 20 was my second Sparc machine (after my Sparcstation 10). Since my Sparcstation 10 is long gone, the SS20 is my only multi-processor Sparc machine, and a testbed of sorts. I tricked the Sparcstation 10 out with its maximum RAM, two large SCSI drives, a faster CDROM, two 180MHz MBUS CPUs, 4-Meg VRAM SIMM, a SunVideo capture card, and PCMCIA ports. Problem is, I wasn't able to do a simple parts transplant to the SS20 when the SS10 died... The SS10's BootPROM didn't work in the SS20 (although I was told it would), and I don't have the proper SS20 Ross BootPROM for it, so I can't even let get into the NVRAM to test! Luckily, I can still get the SS20 BootPROM cheaply, and a replacement motherboard at a vastly inflated price if need be! It's a labour of love... The Thinkpad would probably have been tossed with the other 90% of my computers when we moved, if it weren't for one very important thing: It was running OS/2 Warp 4. I spent *FOR-FUCKING-EVER* learning the ins-and-outs of OS/2, applying fix-packs, getting my bloody network card and video drivers to work, and in general getting used to the OS. I didn't get much of a chance to enjoy the fruits of my labour before the hard drive died. I'm keen to get it going again. I'm all about stewardship.
