March 21st, 2018: I wasn't going to post anything today, as I'm in a foul mood from my workday. But, we must march on. Parts of SDF were inaccessable for a while last night, I wasn't able to telnet or ssh in, and gopher was down (but gopher.club worked). Not a big deal to me, shit happens. If it means the world has to wait for me to prattle on about bikes and old computers, so be it. But it did give me pause to think about my gopherhole in general... if SDF ever went down for good, where would I host my site? My MOTD blog? That weird psychedelic picture of me that I use as my profile pic on Mastodon[1]? A very good question. Firstly, I really should back my site up. I haven't backed it up since 2013, when I was fooling around with FUSE on SDF and my old Debian PC (which is partially dead). Secondly, I have to decide whether or not I'll mirror the content elsewhere (as some of you have done). I've thought about going the VPS route, running my own gopher server, BBS, etc, but I'm not certain I'd want to put in the effort. SSHing into SDF and using a text editor is one thing, but building up a VPS, securing it, and maintaining it is another. Frankly, I just don't have the time for that. Guess I have some thinking to do... References: [1] https://sdf.org/tour/sdfers/gen.cgi?sparcipx@sdf
