November 14th, 2019: I'm a happy little workstation today. I'd been messing with my MSX over the last couple of days and having little success. My PS/2 keyboard interface cart didn't seem to work, and my FM PAC didn't work in the slot expander, which kinda put a damper on my MSX plans. Buuuut, I don't give up that easy. I had a feeling the PS/2 interface needed to be in a primary slot, so I plugged it into slot 1 on the MSX, and moved my Maxiol CF-IDE cart to the first slot in the expander...and the damned thing worked! The keymappings are all over the place and will need to be marked on the PS/2 keyboard, but for now it's fine. The FM Pac issue is a bit of a disappointment. I discovered it really DOES work in the slot expander, but the volume is REALLY low. It's somewhat audible if I max the volume on the TV, but I'm not risking it (wife and kid are light sleepers). I suspect I'll need either another slot expander with an external power supply, or another sound cart with an audio out jack for powered speakers. It's still perfectly usable for playing games as long as it's plugged into either of the main slots and NOT the expander. Speaking of playing games, I got around to trying some of the utilities meant for use with my Musical Memory Mapper: ROM2MMM and SG1000 chiefly. These let the MSX run Colecovision and Sega SG-1000 games, using the MMM's SN76489AN sound chip to reproduce either console's sound. It was cool being able to play Gorf and Cosmic Avenger on the MSX, although I really have to track down a SubRoc ROM to have my Colecovision holy trinity again. The SG-1000 worked well, although I didn't do much more than play a round of Bombjack. Planning to try Hang On II a bit later. Most importantly, I tried SofaROM to play MSX ROMs off HD rather than my flash cart. Seems to work fine, so that's my game playing sorted. Now I can concentrate on the serious side of things. I think my next investment will be an RGB-SCART cable, as the MSXDOS display is hard to read via my TV's composite inputs. I'll probably look into a PS/2 Mouse adapter in the near future as well, it's not necessary right now but might be handy down the road. All the while keeping an eye out for an RS232 cart...
