July 25th, 2019: It's been a good day. Our new central air conditioner was installed today. The "premium" unit we were quoted was out of stock, so they got us an even better one on their dime. The install was apparenly a bit difficult, as one of the installers was heard to question the sanity and mental faculties of the person who installed our previous unit... While we were waiting for the install, I hacked around on a couple of laptops I was given from my late mother-in-law's apartment. One is a relatively recent HP Elitebook 840 G2, the other a 2008-vintage Asus Eee PC. My sister-in-law mentioned that the HP was a recent purchase, and that her mom probably didn't have much on it (which my wife confirmed). None of us knew the answers to her security questions, so I restored the laptop to its (Windows 10) defaults and began installing all my favourite open-source apps like GIMP, KRITA, etc. The Eee PC wasn't a challenge, either. I copied the Debian 10 netinstall ISO to a 2gb SD card and installed it on the netbook. It was a bit slow, but the end result was acceptable. I've been using the Eee PC all evening, and I quite like it. The webcam sucks, but I'd rarely use it anyway. I think the Eee PC will become my mobile writing platform. It's light, portable, and will fit my bike panniers nicely. Tomorrow's project will be to put the netbook through its paces.
