June 28th, 2020: As mentioned on Mastodon yesterday, I've finally turfed Evernote and OneNote in favour of Joplin. I've been an Evernote user for about a decade, and a OneNote user for the past two. Both are handy for taking notes and jotting down ideas, and having them tied together in one central interface, rather than having hundreds of disparate and poorly-named individual files scattered on my hard drive, phone, or tablet. As much as I liked Evernote, and despite my negative bias toward Microsoft and their products, OneNote was seeing more and more use. OneNote has phenomenal outliner and note link functionality, something both Evernote and Joplin lack out of the box. Having a good outliner is important for the way I think and work, keeping things structured and organized while still providing for the tangents, tweaks, and what-ifs that frequently pop into my head while planning. I also frequently use OneNote's note link functionality to keep similar ideas and concepts connected. You may ask, "If OneNote is so great and was working for you, why did you switch?" Well, I switched for a number of reasons. First off, as previously mentioned, is the negative bias and mistrust I have concerning Microsoft and their products. Part of that is due to privacy concerns, part of it is due to Microsoft's business practices; part of it is my inherent dislike of corporations, monopolies, and capitalism; and part of it is my own rebellious streak and preference of underdogs and also-rans over the "big" or "popular" choice. Yeah, I'm an idealistic, misguided old hipster. Fuck off. Secondly, I'm a huge proponent of free open source software, and have been slowly replacing proprietary software with suitably mature open source alternatives. I'm not an early adopter when it comes to my workflow, so the FOSS apps need to be stable and able to do what I need them to do. Often, this means waiting until a particular application is robust (and bugfixed) enough to be a drop-in replacement in my workflow. Joplin is *just* about there, and once I figured out how to "sort-of" create an outline in Markdown, I made the switch. My Evernote Premium account is due for renewal in August. I won't be renewing it now that I know Joplin works for me. ** In other news, I think I might finally do something with my SDF webpage [1] after all these years. If I do, I'll probably keep it as a static Web 1.0 page, largely plaintext with some embedded images. No scripts, no stylesheets, just plain ol' text. [1]https://sparcipx.freeshell.org
