July 4th, 2023: Surprising nobody, I'm leaning quite heavily toward using my Powerbook 5300 for the Old Computer Challenge. This week will be the deciding factor. I installed a few things yesterday that, if they work, will help tip the scale in the 5300's favour. I've been asked why I'd spend my limited time and attention tweaking a nearly 30 year-old computer for performance, when that performance won't come anywhere *close* to a more modern machine. My usual answer to that is "Everything was state-of-the-art once". It will do what it was designed to do, and will do so as well as it did when it was new. The computer is the computer, and frankly my computing *needs* fall well within this spec. However, meeting my computer *needs* is hardly challenging. I have *another* plan for the Old Computer Challenge, but I'm keeping it a secret for now. The things I installed yesterday will help in this regard, if they work as planned. Hoping to test everything later tonight or tomorrow evening. More on this tomorrow.
