------------------------------------------------------------ Technology/Spaces&Tabs, (sdf.org), 07/30/2018 ------------------------------------------------------------ User tomasino wrote a good piece on the use of spaces vs. tabs[1]. I was just dealing with this question the other day, as I re-configured my programming editor after reinstall (and tried a few new editors for kicks.) Since I don't work much with others on programming projects, this has always been purely a personal preference for me, but it's been one that I've oscillated on. I guess I never thought about it being a subject of debate, but that makes sense, as most things are a subject of debate when it comes to programming! My thoughts are in-line with tomasino on this: go with what works for the team or project. I currently tend to use tabs. The only issue I have is that I need to configure various editors to treat them the same way when possible. But I have that choice, whereas with spaces I would not, and that is nice (as tomasino points out.) One question I have is: are tabs and spaces equally portable when it comes to a text file? If you're talking about retro systems, new systems, and localized systems, do both have about the same amount of portability? [1] gopher://gopher.black:70/1/phlog/20180729-tabs-vs-spaces
