NEWS FLASH: SiMpLe MaChInEs (gopher://jgw.mdns.org) is taking a possibly permanent hiatus from Gopherspace. The server, through several hardware/software incarnations, had been running almost continuously since 2003. Though the content varied over the years, the phlog, a term first coined by the gophermiester, persisted almost from the start. Probably the most popular info retrieved was notes and materials from a Common Lisp class conducted at SDF.org. Instructions for setting up the native NetBSD SASL for Postfix was also quite popular. Although the latest server had a fairly light energy footprint, having the device on 24/7 seemed increasingly irresponsible given the low traffic and the fact that much of the power comes from burning fossil fuels, the extraction and burning of which are responsible for much of the climate change and ocean acidification. If humans are to have any sort of future on this planet we need to get serious about reducing our consumption of non-renewable resources, reduce pollution of the environment, and frankly, reduce our numbers significantly. Want to know about the issues and what our likely significantly less-consumptive future might look like? http://ourrenewablefuture.org/ video for the reading-impaired: https://youtu.be/LcraVuQbQUI Maybe we can pull it off but to be honest, some days I have little faith that humans are up to the task of saving themselves. If we had started transitioning 15-20 years ago it would have been a hard but not herculean task; now it's a very tough nut to crack. Good luck humanity, simple (primate) DIR Phlog
