The changes made allow the program to compile correctly, to give error messages more meaningful to VMS, to allow '$' in identifier tokens in C programs, and to expand wild-cards in the input filespecs. 2. To minimize the differences from the original version, the VMS filename expansion converts filenames to lower case, and strips version numbers. This does indeed mean that some input specs (containing version wildcards) will cause curious effects, it is reasonably consistent with Emacs, which ignores file versions. .
