NSFW, or better, Not Suitable For Offices

Posted in: NSFW, Not Suitable For Offices,
"But your tag-" Yep... Mostly used by internet conventions. I don't
want to jumpscare anyone, and we need to use common terms to
understand each other. Also, it works both in Spanish and English.
But I don't like "Not Safe For Work"
That's why I added the tag "Not Suitable For Offices" to make the
point. (It is used only here because it is my first post Not Suitable
For Offices in English tho. Older posts are in Spanish)
It is not perfect, there are office jobs that deal with that content
daily (police come to mind, regarding what they see and do). But at
least it evokes the enviroment in a explicit way that NSFW does
implicitly.
I get its objective tho
It is just a content warning (CW), so you don't open stuff while you
are working that could get you fired. Almost always (at least
locally), it is used for porn. "Here's porn, don't click while you're
on your job, keep working, wait untill you are home".
It can be used for violent and/or sexual not-porn content too, because
you can also get fired with those. It is one of the most generic CWs.
I always agree with CWs as a concept. If you wanna see, you keep
going, else, you can skip something triggering or inconvenient.
But I don't like it.
Why?
Not suitable, for what?
Truth is, most of this point is related to many jobs erasure. Lots of
jobs deal with violent and/or sexual content and themes, permamently.
And society treats these workers pretty bad already.
Examples:
- A lot of social workers need to help people in awful conditions.
Their life stories would have a paragraph full of just CWs. In other
words, with the common use, their lifes are NSFW.
- Social media moderators. Many times, they literally have to see NSFW
content to work. How else will they act? You can't take actions
without knowing what are you dealing with. You can't (or at least
shouldn't) use an automatic ban-hammer.
- Artists by commision. That fetishistic furry patrons meme has some
truth. Some people indeed make a living doing that. Not all artists,
but many do. (If you are interested in commisioning that content to
an artist, remember to check their terms of service BEFORE talking
to them. Make sure they offer that kind of product BEFORE asking. Be
respectful!)
- Sex workers. The obvious example. It is an ample category. (Did you
know that stuff I mentioned regarding artists algo applies here?)
TL;DR: Something situable in one job is not in other one, and NSFW
always assumes an office job. It is important to visibilize vulnerable
workers.
Ambiguity
Many use NSFW as the only CW. While it is mainly used for porn, it
covers a lot. If you have a delicate stomach you may have decided to
skip anything tagged like that (if it is your case, thanks for your
trust!).
NSFW can go from a woman breastfeeding her baby to a violent street
attack. It will avoid to get you fired, but that may not be enough for
you.
My side of the fediverse got me used to (/positive) CWs. The ideal is
a tagging system, like multiple Boorus' implementations. But it is not
possible in all platforms, for technical and/or cultural reasons.
Not Safe For Work would be better for bad practices warnings
This is a lighter subject, pero I THINK NSFW SHOULD BE USED ON THIS
STUFF INSTEAD:
IMG Photo of a man using other man as a table, so he can cut a board with a buzz saw
- Short and easy to remember acronym.
- Memeable.
- Gets to the point. It is not safe, stop it.
- Following security standards is important.
It's hard this changes, tho
So, as a treat, I just share my thoughts in this post. Food for
thought.
In case someone is thinking funny stuff, this is not a excuse for you
to evade your responsibilities! 🫵 Remember to be responsible and
considerate in your job, people are counting on you! When you are done
with your assignated tasks you can play your gacha game.
