It's a single-screen action game where you play as a frog who has to cross a road and river to reach safety. It's one of the classics, and it was ported to a ton of systems. This FAQ is based on the Game Boy Color version developed by Hasbro. ==[H.]== How to Play ========================================================== The objective of Frogger is simple. You need to cross the river five times per stage and occupy each of the holes on the other side to beat the level. If you get hit by car, eaten by a gator, bit by a snake, or fall into the water, you lose a life. There is no end to the game; after beating all eight stages, the game just loops indefinitely until you use up all of your lives. Therefore, the real goal of the game is to get the highest score possible. To achieve this, try the following: - Cross the river as quickly as possible. When you reach a hole, your remaining time is converted to points. - Collect frogs and bring them to a hole for 200 points. Also, if you eat a fly you get an additional 200 points. The frogs always appear in the same place in each stage, but the flies appear randomly. - Jumping gives you 10 points. If you're waiting on a log, jump back and forth for some extra score. ==[WT.]== Walkthrough ========================================================== Level 1 - Get Ready The first stage is a cakewalk. It has easy traffic and few diving turtles. Use this stage to hone your skills for the later levels. Level 2 - Watch Out for Sneaky Gators in Level Two This stage introduces "sneaky gators" which randomly appear in frog hols. While they're active, you'll die if you try to jump in the hole they occupy. However, if you can reach the hole before the gator is fully extended, you'll be safe. Level 3 - Try Not to Croak in Level Three This stage introduces normal gators, which are identical to logs except that you die when you jump on their head. Besides that, it's a small step up in difficulty from the previous stage. Level 4 - One Snake Bite and you are Hisssssstory Now this is where the game starts getting really hard. Although it introduces the snake, which travels back and forth on the sidewalk between the road and the river, the biggest danger here is the lane of purple cars, which moves fast and has a tricky pattern. Like gators, you can jump on a snake's body but its head will kill you. Be patient and watch the lane of purple cars closely before proceeding. Level 5 - Hop Right Up to Level Five This stage is actually slightly easier than the previous one because the row of purple cars isn't as brutal. However, it's harder than ever to reach the leftmost hole so watch out. Level 6 - Stage Six is Very Slithery This stage's gimmick is that it has two snakes on the sidewalk and a single one on the second row of logs that appears on every other log. Be patient, wait for the right moment, and proceed carefully. Level 7 - Jump Up to Stage Seven This one is just slightly more difficult than the prior stage. Level 8 - Level Eight is Too Tough for Tadpoles The final stage. This one's a real doozy. In addition to brutal traffic, the logs and turtles move extremely quickly and there's only a single gator in the final row. Use everything you've learned and proceed carefully. After beating all eight stages, the game loops indefinitely. The second time around, all of the stages have three snakes total but besides that they're identical. ==[T.]== Tips ================================================================== - In each stage, you can quickly get to a hole almost immediately if you're aggressive enough. - You gain an extra life every 10,000 points, so do your best to collect flies and frogs. - Levels aren't random. Learn their layout and proceed with a plan. - Usually, there's an optimal order to tackle the holes in each stage. Experiment with different permutations to see what works best. - The leftmost hole is always the hardest to get. Have patience and don't be afraid to hop off if you're on the wrong log. - If you're on a log and almost about to reach the side of the screen, jump off at the last possible moment. You might just survive. ==[WT.]== Cheats =============================================================== Cheaters never prosper! I'm only including these here for completeness. Cheat Mode - After dying, on the high score screen, press ABAB Select Start. Stop Traffic - During game, press ABB Left Right Up B A. ==[W.]== Legal Disclaimer ====================================================== Feel free to post this anywhere without even crediting me. I just made this FAQ because I really wanted to know how many stages this game had and that info didn't exist on the internet.
