[_1000_] ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- + Introduction + [_0100_] ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- Welcome to my guide covering RodLand, sometimes also written 'Rod Land', an arcade game ported to the Gameboy and also released on a few other consoles such as the NES, C64 or Amiga. I got into RodLand by writing a FAQ for the NES version of this game as a part for the NES FAQ completion project running on the GameFAQs FAQ Contributors - General board. After this I decided to check out also the other versions of the game. The Gameboy version was developed by Eurocom for Sales Curve Interactive, and published by Jaleco in 1993. Rodland is an action/platform game with a slight puzzle touch, very similar to the better known Bubble Bobble games. You take control of Rit (and/or Tam) and need to make your way through the stages in order to save their mother who was kidnapped by a monster. Good thing they got a magic rod and a pair of rainbow shoes to help them on their way. And good for you that also the game's graphics and soundtrack are well done. Due to an issue with the English version of the game I had to resort to the Japanese one. I'm pretty sure there are not many differences between the two regional editions. Should you know of such differences, please contact me under the e-mail address given in the Question and Legal section. -----------------------------+++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- + Game Controls + [_0200_] -----------------------------+++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- Game controls: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Start - Confirm selected option (title screen) - Pause and resume the game (during gameplay) Select - Toggle between options (title screen) - not used during gameplay A button - Confirm selected option (title screen) - Fire button, attack enemies or create ladders (in combination with Up/Down on the D-pad) B button - Same as A button Direction pad: Up/Down - Climb up/down ladders, create own ladder (in combination with A/B) Right/Left - Move sideways _______________ Getting started [_0210_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ On the title screen you can choose between a one player or a two player game (1UP or 2UP). Switch between them with 'Select', then confirm with 'Start', 'A' or 'B'. In case you chose 2 players, the game starts directly. If you play alone, you can further choose between playing as RIT or as TAM. "HELP!!!" "Mom is kidnapped by a Monster." "Mom is taken atop the Maboots tower." -----------------------------++++++++++++++++++------------------------------- + Game Mechanics + [_0300_] -----------------------------++++++++++++++++++------------------------------- ______ Basics [_0310_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯ Every stage - called scene - consists of one room or area. On the NES version, they only filled one screen, but with the smaller size of the Gameboy, the same scenes now scroll as you move. They are filled with platforms, ladders, flowers, enemies and you. You, controlling Rit or Tam have to run through them, climb the ladders and kill the enemies. Don't let them touch you, as you'll immediately lose a life. A scene can be beaten in different ways. The most straightforward way is to kill all enemies, which directly takes you to the next scene. If you take too much time, 'Meanie mode', announced by an acoustic jingle, starts and all enemies turn into fast Meanies. If they kill you, this costs you a life, but it also takes you to the next scene. The best option, however, is by getting to the EXTRA game. Collecting all flowers starts this EXTRA game part of a scene. It causes all enemies to turn into Kaburas, turnip-like beings, for about 30 seconds. If you kill them now, they leave behind a letter, an A, E, R, T or an X. If you manage to collect one of each, forming the word EXTRA, this will end the scene and take you to the good fairy, who will award you an extra life and 10'000 points. "Here, take this life energy and good luck. Player 1UP. Bonus 10000 points." And already a small hint: The dropped letter cycles through all 5 letters once, then it disappears into nothing. So wait a bit and grab the letter you're still missing, but don't wait too long. There are 40 normal stages, and after every tenth stage you battle a boss, just to add some diversity. Beating them also nets 10'000 points. In the stages, collecting a single flower gives 50 points, but picking them up in a row doubles this, so the second in a row gives 100, the third 200, then 400 and 800, which is the maximum. After a short time, this 'doubling effect' wears off and it starts again at 50 per flower. Bashing an enemy (see 'Abilities' below) gives 50 points, killing him 100. Killing an enemy with a special weapon (see below) and collecting the reward it drops even nets 1000 up to 3000 points. Hitting a boss yields 100 points, as does hitting boss minions. You yourself lose a life on contact with an enemy or an enemy projectile. The only exception is when you drop from above directly on en enemy's head, then you can stun them. You start out with three lives in the English version and nine in the Japanese version, respectively. Once they're used up, it's Game Over, you have no continues. "Game Over" _________ Abilities [_0320_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Attack: ¯¯¯¯¯¯ Push the Fire button (A or B) either while standing or while running sideways. You will use your magic rod, displayed as a rather fine line, which stuns an enemy when you hit one. Repeatedly press B to bash the stunned enemy around. When defeated, he will leave behind a special weapon. Create a ladder: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Push the Fire button (A or B) while pressing Up or Down on the D-pad. This creates one ladder which you can climb up or down. Only one such ladder can exist at a time, so once you create a new one, the old one disappears. (In other versions of the game, namely e.g. the NES version, you could enable Jumping. But not in the Gameboy version - all you can do is run, climb and attack.) _______________ Special Weapons [_0330_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ When you kill an enemy by bashing him, he leaves one of different possible special weapons. If you kill another enemy with one of these, he drops a fruity reward. Collecting that nets from 1000 to 3000 points. Special weapons activate as soon as you touch them. These include: Revel : Four small balls zoom through the stage in billard style, very effective, but less than in the NES version Bomb : Causes a small explosion at that place for a very short while, not very useful Dynamite: A sonic boom-like wave propagates horizontally in both directions to the end of the screen, quite effective Rocket : A rocket is launched in the direction you faced activating it, hits only the first enemy in line S-Ball : Hops around the screen in the direction you faced activating it, hits only one enemy or disappears at the border of the screen Flame : A jet of flames projects in the direction you're facing and only Thrower stops after a few seconds, you can even walk around with it, extremely effective Icicle : Similar to the Bomb, but with a much bigger radius and longer time of effect, quite effective Not all special weapons appear in all scenes. ___________ Enemy Types [_0340_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Spud: Looks like a blob with bunny ears and two eyes, the first enemy you'll encounter Corncob: Looks like a corn cob with two big feet, is slow like the Spuds Shark: Enemie looking like a shark head who can throw a tear (projectile) downwards Nessie: Serpent-like enemies, they follow you around when on the same floor, take care when they speed up to get you Bunnie: Cute bunny-like enemies with ears, they just run around like the Spuds Polymorph: Fat worms with a big mouth, they attack by rolling out their tongue quickly, so never stand in front of them or kill them fast Wasp: Flying enemy, pretty dangerous, as they can also fly through solid platforms, so kill them as fast as possible Squirrel: Squirrels that walk around just like your normal Spuds Spiney: Walking balls with horns/spikes, they can shoot slow balls upwards, so take care, especially when they're beneath you Chicken: Looks like a Banana with small arms and feet, walks around like your everyday Spud enemy Lobster: Lobster enemy, can attack you by extending one of its claws Monkey: Monkey enemy, walks around like your normal Spud or Chicken Starfish: Star-shaped enemies, beware of their boomerang attack Meanie: Normal enemies change into these when you take too much time for a scene, very quick, so keep your calm Kabura: Turnip-like enemy, remaining enemies turn into them after picking all flowers of a scene, leaves behind one letter of the word EXTRA Mini-crocodile: Small crocodiles running straight along a platform, only appear during the first boss fight Squid (worm???): Small squids/worms that only appear during the second boss fight, they are shot out of the whale's water hole, then fall down to the floor, where they whiggle towards the border of the screen, kill them whenever they come close Mini-elephant: Small elephants thrown at you during the third boss battle, they only wander along the bottom floor, harmless when you're a bit up on a ladder ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- + General Tips + [_0400_] ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- While the fastest way to beat a scene may be to kill all enemies, it's often worth to go for the Extra Game and win an extra life. However, don't overdo it. I, myself, for example took every chance to kill the wasp enemies as soon as I could, because I didn't like them at all. The spuds, however, are easily evaded even in bigger numbers. If you go for Extra game, only stun the enemies and then run by. While stunned, they can't hurt you. In Extra game, don't take too much time or it may run out and the Kaburas will turn back into the normal enemies. In Extra game, when killing a Kabura, wait a bit before picking up the letter. Look at it first and if necessary wait until you see the letter you're missing for EXTRA, as they toggle through all five, but only once. Try not to take too much time in order to avoid Meanie mode. The Meanies are rather fast. But if it happens, don't worry, you can still beat them like any other enemy. Enemies who climb a ladder always follow it to its end, they never get off halfway to an adjacent platform. Keep this in mind and you'll find some nice safe spots in some scenes. ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- + Scenes Guide + [_0500_] ------------------------------++++++++++++++++-------------------------------- I will give short descriptions of each scene here. Scene 01 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Plenty of space with complete platforms and enough ladders. There are only four Spud enemies here. Just stun them when necessary and collect all flowers to get into EXTRA mode and then some EXTRA letters. Scene 02 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There's one platform to the left and three to the right. There are quite a lot of Spud enemies around, only stun them, or maybe kill one or two of them to get up to the left platform. Get the flowers there, then drop and float over to the right part. It should be easy to collect all flowers and complete the EXTRA game to get an extra life. In fact, this is a good place to play around a bit and practice dodging enemies. A screen follows, informing you that you've now reached the Maboots tower where your mom is being held: "Enter the Tower to rescue your Mom." Scene 03 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You meet both two Corncobs and some Sharks for the first time. Just don't spend your time below the Sharks, else you can treat them exactly like Spuds. An easy way is to make your way on the left side (where you start) from the bottom upwards, collecting all flowers on the way, then grabbing the remaining two on the right side when going back down. That way you get all five enemies to turn into Kaburas and can get up to 4 EXTRA letters. Scene 04 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The two 'first floor' platforms can only be reached by your own ladder or by falling down from above. With four sharks here, it's advisable to get above them quickly if you're going for the flowers, or just kill them as fast as possible. This is definitely a 'go for EXTRA' level. Grab the flowers going through the scene clockwise or anti-clockwise and avoiding the Sharks. Scene 05 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There's one big platform at the top which you cannot reach with ladders. You need to step on a balloon that comes out of the floor in order to be carried up. If you get lucky (or have a good timing), one of the first balloons after you collect the flowers on the lower platform will take you up, then you can grab the ones at the top. Manoeuvering at the bottom dodging all five enemies can get a bit tricky, though, so don't risk too much and go for the kills if things get close. Scene 06 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Again a scene with Corncobs, and two Sharks. This is another scene where I recommend going for EXTRA game. The uppermost platforms may be somewhat hard to reach because of the long ladders. So don't take any risk and either wait for the enemies to come down. Two of the flowers in the upper right part are suspended in mid-air. You need to jump and float down from the upper floors. I found the easiest way for this scene to go the the left border, then go up one floor using your magical ladder. Follow the Corncob, then climb up the long ladder to the upper left platform. After getting all flowers there, drop down to the right, grab the suspended flowers while floating, and directly get on the long ladder to the right. Get up that one, get the two flowers at the top, then drop down in the middle for the last flowers. Scene 07 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ A new enemy species here: Nessies. Don't worry too much about them. Simply kill them when they drop down to your floor and don't let them follow you around with a similar speed as your own. You need your magic ladder for the flowers suspended in mid-air, and the platforms above can only be reached by using balloons. The balloons appear on two possible spots, left and right between the middle and the mid-air flowers. Don't take any risks, it's easiest to just kill all enemies. Scene 08 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Five Corncob enemies drop down in the middle of the scene. Don't worry, they're easily dodged and also the flowers will be collected without a hassle. So this is definitely a level where you should go for EXTRA game. At the start, create a magical ladder and climb it. Wait a bit until the Corncobs are below you, then jump off of it to the right and float towards the center of the stage. Use your ladder to go up in the center via the two small platforms. Keep using your ladders to also collect the flowers at the upper left and upper right platforms until you can go back down and get your EXTRA letters. Take care when jumping down, though. The safest way is by hanging on a magical ladder from the top and first checking the bottom floor. Scene 09 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Another stage with 5 Corncob enemies. And again it's relatively risk-free to go for EXTRA game. Go to the very left of the stage in the beginning and wait for the enemies to have fallen off of the platform above you. Now use a magical ladder to go up yourself and start collecting those flowers. Get up completely by connecting your own ladder with the normal one, then drop and float to the middle. The risk-free way to get all four flowers here is by creating a ladder downwards, then dropping off the 1-block platform to the right (getting the mid-air flower) and floating back to your ladder. Go back up, make a new ladder upwards and float to the right single block, grabbing the other two flowers. The remaining ones to the right side are easy, and what follows is EXTRA letter business as usual. Scene 10 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ One small platform to the left on the first floor, a bigger one above it, both connected to the ground floor with a normal ladder. From the second platform, another ladder takes you up to the large top floor and two other small platforms are waiting to the right side. Enemy-wise there are only five Spuds, so profit and go for EXTRA game. Start by climbing the leftmost ladder to the small platform. Then use your own ladder to get to the second one and then continue climbing to the top floor, grabbing all flowers there. Drop down to the right and get the last four flowers to reach EXTRA game. This takes you to your first boss battle. Boss Battle - The Crocodiles [_0510_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are four floors, and on each side three crocodile heads on mobile platforms moving up and down. When a mouth opens, it releases small crocodiles that slowly run along their platform. Be careful, they can also jump up one floor! The small ones take one hit to kill, but the big heads - the real boss - take much more, namely about 15-16 hits each with your wand until they disappear. The best and safest position to hit a head while avoiding the falling small crocs and the ones launched directly by the head in front of you is on/under the second block from the side. If you want to reduce risks and don't want to find yourself trapped between two of the heads launching mini- crocs at you, try killing them on one side first before taking care of the three on the other side. For all of this you don't actually need to climb up a platform. It's safest to just stay on the bottom floor, especially with the mini-crocodiles jumping, and wait for the croc heads to come down to you. Anyway - take care when hitting on one of the heads. When their mouth opens and they do release a mini-croc, make sure to time your wand zap such that you kill the small one, or else it will cost you a life. Generally, though, the more heads you get rid of, the less dangerous the fight becomes. (While at one time I was under the impression that the last head remaining will release mini-crocs faster, this didn't seem to be the case a second time, so I'd say there's no pattern change with only one or two heads left. Unlike e.g. in the NES version.) Beating the boss nets a nice 10000 points bonus! Scene 11 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ New enemy types ahead: the rather harmless Bunnies and a Polymorph. When you seen the latter stick out its tongue while you're standing in front of it, it's already too late, so avoid that! Either keep away two blocks or build a magic ladder and climb it - or kill it soon. Otherwise, there are is one complete floor above you, and you can connect to the suspended ladders with your own to get up, as waiting for a balloon is too tedious. This is an easy scene to collect some EXTRA letters, start by picking the flowers suspended in mid-air above you (you need two ladders for this). Then, while dodging the enemies, connect to one of the two suspended ladders to get to the upper floor and grab the remaining flowers. When going back down for the Kaburas, don't drop down blindly but climb down a ladder and check out the situation quickly beforehand. Scene 12 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Medium sized platforms build some kind of wedding cake form with two additional platforms at the top right and left. Even though the four Polymorph enemies might pose some threat and it is tempting to just kill them immediately, it's also rather easy to go for EXTRA game. The enemies are avoided easily by going up and down the platforms, collecting the flowers in the process. Of course you need your own ladders to reach the topmost flowers. And don't worry if you kill an enemy - you wouldn't be able to spell EXTRA completely and need the next scene(s) for that anyway. Scene 13 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are only two floors here, the bottom one and a complete platform at the top. At least they're connected by a long ladder on the right side. A second short one going down from the top allows the enemies to fall down. Five enemies, two Polymorphs and three Bunnies are directly falling down to your floor at the start. To avoid getting hit immediately, create a ladder upwards and climb it, then drop over to the right side. If necessary stun an enemy, then climb up the long ladder to the top. As getting all flowers here is a bit annoying and time-consuming (you need to build a lot of your own ladders to avoid enemies and get the flowers or take a few balloon rides), it's safest to just kill all enemies where you are now. If you're patient enough, you can still get some more EXTRA letters, but chances are that Meanie mode will come earlier than EXTRA game. Scene 14 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Quite a few small and scattered platforms here, with those at the borders connected by a triple ladder. The middle ones are also easily accessible by your own magical ladders or from above. This is a scene where it's relatively easy getting into EXTRA game even with the four flower in the center suspended in mid-air, and with the two Polymorphs and three Bunnies, you can easily get four or even all five letters. Start by going right and getting the flowers on the right side first, then float over to the center platform and collect those there. The remaining ones in the top left part are most easily accessed by your own ladders through the center. Scene 15 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ A new enemy species is introduced: four dangerous Wasps fly through the area - bleh. Otherwise, there are quite easily accessible large platforms on all levels, but the Wasps make manoeuvering dangerous. If you feel confident enough, go for the flowers and only dodge or stun the Wasps. If not, watch their movement pattern while waiting for them on the ground floor and kill them as quickly as possible. Scene 16 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Gah - Squirrels! Don't worry, they're not really dangerous, they're more or less a variation of the Spud or Corncob enemy. But more importantly, there's another new species: the Spineys. They can shoot slow balls upwards, so don't linger while there's one beneath you! The stage itself is nice. Once the Spiney enemy is off of the platform on the first level, this place is an excellent refuge. From there you can easily collect all flowers in the top right and the top left part of the screen to get into EXTRA game. The only way an enemy can get to you is by dropping down in the middle or by one of your own ladders. Scene 17 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ In these scene with only Spiney enemies there are two large platforms on the second level, each one connected to the ground floor with a ladder. Two more ladders then take you up to the top floor. At the start, use your magic ladder to get the eight flowers suspended in mid- air, all while avoiding the Spineys that have already dropped down to you. Then go up one of the long ladders (a magical ladder directly beside it helps making that safer) and on to the top floor. Get the eight flowers there and prepare for some EXTRA letter grabbing. Scene 18 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This is the first scene to feature teleport doors. Pressing 'Up' while standing in front of one will take you to its counterpart (the bottom left one is connected to the left one of the upper central pair, the one on the bottom right is connected to the right one of the pair). When using them, make sure your destination is clear of enemies. Although you're invincible for a very short time upon arrival at the door counterpart, it's still a bit dangerous. Another good thing to know is that they can't use the devices themselves. If you're going for the flowers, it's easiest teleporting up, then collecting the flowers while making/dropping your way down, once on the right side, once on the left side, and don't forget the mid-air flowers in the center. You'll need to occasionally stun an enemy or make a detour to remain unharmed. If you want to go the safer but brutal way, wait in the bottom left corner beside the teleport door until the Squirrels and Spineys come to you. In case you're very lazy, simply teleport to the uppermost platform and wait for the timer to run out. No enemy can get to you there, you may only have to dodge a ball projectile of a Spiney. Scene 19 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are three small platforms on the topmost level and two one below. Going up either means taking the long (3-level) ladder in the middle, which is quite dangerous, or using your magic ladder to reach the pre-made ladder to the right side of the center of the screen. My best advice for this stage is to wait on the bottom floor for the enemies to drop down, then immediately kill them. It's not worth risking your lives to get to EXTRA game. Scene 20 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Another level with teleport doors (the left one of the bottom central pair is connected to the upper left one, the right one of the bottom pair is connected to the upper right one), and worse, with five Wasp enemies! Also given the fact that a lot of the flowers are suspended in mid-air, I strongly suggest to go for kills instead of flowers. Wait at the bottom or teleport and climb up to the top, then wait for the Wasps and kill them as quickly as possible. This takes you to your second boss battle. Boss Battle - The Whale [_0520_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Wherever it may have come from, the boss in this fight is a whale. The big Whale always appears out of the ground floor, but varies in height of the resting position, sometimes he even only just appears to attack. His weak spots are his eyes, so this is your main target. When he pops up, he throws something out of his air hole at you that looks like jumping sea-cucumbers at first and a kind of mini-whale a bit later, once it's settled into the floor. During the fight, your main priority should be to not get hurt. Always make sure you zap the sea-cucumbers/mini-whales to get rid of them. And keep a safe distance once they're out of the Whale's hole. Also, only attack the actual Boss's eyes when they are on your own height: don't build ladders to get a bit higher up, it's too dangerous. So in short: get somewhat close when you can hit the eyes directly, but only until the mini-whales are launched at you, then retire into a corner and get rid of them first. The big Whale takes 30 hits (give or take one) until he goes down. Beating the boss nets another 10000 bonus points! Scene 21 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Two long ladders connect the bottom with four intermediate platforms and the top floor. And then there's Chicken alert. Well, actually, they are just as slow and harmless as the early Spud enemies, so deal with them correspondingly. The other new enemy type is slightly more dangerous: the Lobster can extend his claw forward to attack you, similar to the Polymorph's tongue attack. As soon as it stands still, it will attack and you won't have the time to react. So either kill it quickly or just take care not to stand in front of it. Generally, the enemies are easy to stun and avoid. This is definitely a good scene to go for EXTRA game. With all the Chicken enemies dropping to the bottom floor at the start, immediately go up with your own ladder. You can collect the flowers when going through the scene in a clockwise 'circle': up on the left side, over to the right, then down on the right side. Small tip: you're safest on one of the platforms in the middle and you can get anywhere else pretty quickly. Scene 22 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are two platforms on the first level, both already connected by two ladders with the bottom floor. One row of flowers is on said platforms while another is suspended in mid-air above them. Protecting them are four Lobster enemies. As it's safest keeping one's distance from them, get to the upper platforms as quickly as possible, then dodge them there, mostly using your ladder. However, if you're uneasy around them and don't want to go for EXTRA game, simply kill them as soon as possible when they come up a ladder. Scene 23 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Another case of Chicken and Lobster... The scene has two very long ladders, each going up on their side from the ground floor to the very top, connecting medium sized platforms on the first and second level and reaching up to two teleport doors. Talking of these, the door in the bottom left corner is connected to the one in the upper left, the one in the bottom right corner is connected to the door in the upper right. If you go for the flowers, use the teleport door close to the starting point to go to the upper half and drop down left a bit to get the four flowers there. Immediately climb up again and drop to the right, getting the four other flowers. Then go over to the right side, either drop down and take the other teleport door or climb a magic ladder and float over directly. Repeat what you did on the left side to get the flowers, then go get these letters! Scene 24 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ And yet another Chicken and Lobster menu in a scene with many small and medium platforms and all kind of ladders. A lot of the flowers are suspended a bit awkwardly in mid-air. Thus I suggest you go for the kills in this level and forget about the flowers. You've got to be careful at the start, though, as there are several enemies coming at once. So it's best to run off to the right side right away, or you directly make a ladder where you start and climb it, then float over the approaching enemies. Once you've killed one or two, the safest place is below one of the two small platforms in the corners. However, there is no perfectly safe spot, you've still gotta be a bit careful. Scene 25 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Bleh, another scene with Wasps, five of them. Fortunately, they remain at the top level for a while before coming down. This scene is a bit special in the aspect that there are blocks on the ground floor, creating two one-step- platforms to the right and left. So you need to use a ladder to get into the bottom corners. The general strategy here should be to not get hit while killing everything on screen as quickly as possible. Because of the bottom platforms, I suggest climbing up past the middle platforms up to the Wasps directly at the start. Time your arrival at the upper platform between the Wasps and wreak havoc before they even start flying freely. If you get an early dynamite, this scene should be over quickly. It's really not worth going for the flowers that additionally are mostly suspended in mid-air in the center and above the top platform. Scene 26 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ New enemy types: three Monkeys, your slow Spud-type enemy, and two Starfish enemies, don't stop in front of them or they may throw a boomerang at you, on a scene where the platforms form a closed square: the floors on the first, second and third floor are closed by vertical walls. There's one pre-made ladder going in from the bottom floor and one going out at the top, but of course you could use your own magic ladder to go in. That is, if you want to go for EXTRA game. The safe way, however, as it can get a bit cluttered within the square, is by waiting at the bottom beside the ladder for the enemies to come down, then kill them. If you do want some letters, you should still kill the Starfish and only stun the Monkeys. Scene 27 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There's one platform on the first level, connected by two ladders to the two platforms on the second level, which, in turn, have ladders going down directly to the ground floor. Most of the flowers are suspended in mid-air above the upper platforms. Collecting them is quite tedious - or even dangerous with the five Starfish enemies populating the area. So this is another scene where it's more convenient and safe to just kill all enemies. For this, run over to the right at the start and climb the long ladder. It's safest to grab the baddies when they come up, waiting on the ground floor and zapping them there is more dangerous as they have more space to through their boomerang at you. Scene 28 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are two platforms at the right and the left border each, one on the first, one on the second floor, with ladders already leading up. Above them on the top floor is another platform, connected to both second-level ones. In the very center of the scene, below the uppermost platform, there are two big mines with spikes floating up and down. While the enemies here are not much of a threat (Return of the Spuds - and a Monkey), the flowers are placed quite awkwardly with some of them in mid-air between the mines. Thus, again, I suggest going for the kills rather than the flowers. Simply grab and bash all enemies that are coming/dropping down around your starting point. If you absolutely insist on grabbing all flowers, then go up on the left half first, using your own magical ladder and taking the flowers on the go. At the very top, create a ladder downwards on one of the two central blocks, then climb and drop down. For this, stay as close to the center between the two mines as possible. Then go over to the right and get up there. Repeat the going down with your ladder on the other central block. Scene 29 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The platforms and walls are symmetric on the right and left side, dividing the scene almost in two. There are two Monkeay with three Starfish enemies here, and I suggest you zap at least those, even if you can't turn them into letters in that case. If you want to go for EXTRA game, which can be a bit tedious but is relatively well doable here, you should start out by climbing the small platform in the middle of the first floor, which is a safe place if you have your magic ladder facing upwards from it. Then watch the enemies and hop over to the ladder on one side that is almost clear of enemies and collect all flowers there on your way up, stunning or killing enemies where necessary, then falling back on the center platform from the top. The most difficult flowers are the ones on the right in the middle, where the Monkey can't get out by himself. Rinse and repeat for the other side. The safest way to finish this scene, though, is by climbing the small middle platform. Then create your magical ladder upwards and climb it at least halfway. No enemy can get to you and no Starfish can throw its boomerang at you from the side. Just wait for the Meanies and until they're gone. Scene 30 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The biggest part of the scene is divided in two by a wall of interchanging blocks and flowers, with a few smaller platforms above it. While it is possible to get into the wall and also making your own magical ladder inside, thus allowing you to go directly to the other side or upwards, it is a dangerous thing to do. Especially with the five Wasps flying about! For that reason it's easiest (and I strongly advise you) to just wait near the starting point on the left side and kill any enemy coming near you. This takes you to your third boss battle. Boss Battle - The Elephant [_0530_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Who'd have expected that: an Elephant on a trapeze... He has a movement pattern like a swinging infinity symbol, he throws mini-elephants (that look like teeth with roots) at the floor and he sometimes stops his swing to drop down to the bottom floor. On the borders of the screen there are two blocks each, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. Of course you don't want to be touched by him or his minions. The safest place to avoid the mini-elephants is somewhere above ground. However, if you go up, you risk being hit by the big one himself. So you can resort to zapping the minions while staying on the ground. However, then you have to wait for the Elephant to drop down to the ground, else you can't zap him. This is actually the safest way to deal with this boss: stay on the ground, zap the minis and avoid running under the biggie, so he can't hit you when dropping down. Then when he falls, get close to him and mash the attack button to get as many hits in as possible. Rinse and repeat. Alternately, you can go for a quick finish by climbing up on one of the borders. Either stay right below the lower block (you can attack while standing on the ladder and you're above the minis passing) or go up on the upper one. As soon as the Elephant swings closer, hit him like crazy. This method, however, has its risks, as the Elephant can move completely to your side so you can't escape or dodge him anymore. Still, I managed to beat him that way several times without losing a life. The Elephant only takes 16 hits to kill. Beating the boss nets another 10000 bonus points! Scene 31 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This scene consists of the bottom floor and a complete floor at the top, connected by two long ladders on each side of the scene. All flowers are suspended in a 4x4 pattern between the floors, but too high up for you own magical ladder, so you'd need to get them from above. Additionally, there are two spikey mines on each side of the flowers floating up and down, also reaching the upper floor, so take care. The good thing about the scene are the enemies, as there are only four Spuds, and the teleport doors (the door on the bottom left is connected to the upper one on the left, the door on the bottom right is connected to the upper right one). Going for EXTRA game is easy here. At the start, use the closest teleport door to get to the upper floor. Thanks to the short invincibility after exiting the door, the mines are not a problem. Immediately go towards the middle and create a ladder going downwards to the flowers. Climb down, then drop off, grabbing as many flowers as you can (whiggle the direction pad a bit so you float down in a zig zag pattern). Directly steer towards a teleport door again. Use one again to get back up, make a new ladder one or two blocks beside the previous one and get more flowers. It's possible to get all flowers in two goes, but if necessary make another turn to get the last ones. Use the teleport doors also to quickly switch between floors so you can reach the letter-bearing Kaburas in time. Scene 32 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Bleh, Nessies. Above the bottom floor, connected to it with one ladder, the middle platform has two walls, forming a broad 'u'. Beware the spikey mines floating up and down at the outer parts of the u's sidewalls. The top floor is divided in two parts, and both are connected to the middle platform by a ladder. Getting all flowers is awkward and dangerous, so it's the safest strategy to kill the enemies, or at least some of them early. Best directly grab and bash the two Nessied dropping down to your left at the start. If you now want, get those flowers, you'll only have one or two Nessies left to avoid. Just for the flowers suspended in mid-air beside the mines: get on the respective platform above and make a magical ladder downwards. Dropping from them lets you aim well. Else go to the right and kill what's left. Scene 33 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This scene is almost like one half of an inversed pyramid. The top floor is complete, the second floor is three quarters wide and the first floor one half only (starting from the right side). Both intermediate floors are closed to the left by a vertical wall. The existing ladders are arranged about inversely, there's one going up to the third floor to the very right, one to its left leading to the second floor and one even further left (just near your starting point) going to the first level, but not connecting to any platform. Enemy-wise there are three Nessies and two Spud-baddies. If you want to play it safe, and that's a good option with the Nessies potentially charging at you, then simply wait on the bottom floor until the enemies come down and kill them. But if you want to go for EXTRA game and get some letters, here's what worked best for me. At the start, walk to the right, climb up to the first floor while avoiding the enemies coming down, then take the three flowers there. Go up one floor and go to the leftmost flower first, then take the missing ones here to the right side. Finally, go up to the uppermost floor on the right side and walk left, grabbing the flowers in the process. Normally, there's only one enemy maximum (a Nessie) on the floor. Be ready for it to come charging at you from the left: kill it or stun and run past it all to the left. Once you have all flowers, go back right and down and bash the enemies for those EXTRA letters. Scene 34 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are five Spud enemies in a scene with four small platforms on the first level and two bigger ones on the second floor. There are two ladders on each border that go from the bottom via the first floor to the second one and two ladders that connect the bigger platforms to the two small ones. The flowers at the bottom and on the second floor platforms are easily accessible. For the ones suspended in mid-air just left and right of the middle of the scene you need to build a ladder on the outermost block of the upper platforms. Do this once on the left side and once on the right side and you should reach EXTRA game easily. Even though the Spuds (or Kaburas in EXTRA) are mostly harmless, you should still be careful not to drop between two or three of them at once. But getting a complete set of letters is rather easy here. Profit, as the next scenes will be mostly be ones where going for kills is much safer... Scene 35 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Oh noes, a scene full of Wasps, five of them. So your motto should be: kill them as quickly as possible. It's really not worth going for the flowers, as they are mostly suspended in mid-air in the awkward upper half of the scene. In order to get up there you'd need to either use one of the two long ladders near the borders, or use your own ladder to get to the singular blocks, then go through the tight openings above them - and doing this without getting hit by a Wasp is quite hard. Fortunately, you are quite mobile at the bottom half with two existing ladders to the second floor platform. So watch the baddies fly down and bash them around. If you need only one or two letters to complete EXTRA, then let as many live and get the flowers anyway, but if you need more, try getting them later and don't risk letting more alive. Scene 36 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There's a three block high wall in the middle of the bottom floor. About in the middle between it and the scene borders there are two long ladders going up to the second floor. From there you need your own magical ladder to get further, either to the outer borders of the second level (there's a single block with one flower each) or upwards to the top. Most of the flowers are suspended in mid-air below the uppermost platform but not accessible from the second floor. You need to get them from above. Getting all takes a bit of time but is relatively well doable. The start of the scene is a critical point. The safest strategy is creating a magical ladder just one block to the right of the long ladder on the left. Climb it to avoid the incoming Spuds, then get over to the longer ladder and upwards. Float over to the single flower to the left, then float back and go all the way up. Grab all flowers there using your magical ladder. You can also the ones in the very center without falling down: drop off a ladder in its upper part and float back on it at the bottom. Now there's only the single flower to the very right side left. Get that and then hurry down to grab those EXTRA letters before Meanie mode starts. Scene 37 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Argh, Wasps. And the scene is very awkward, too. There's a 'block-half-wall' in the middle, a long ladder near your starting point going way up and all flowers are suspended in mid-air in the right half. Getting over to the right side and getting all suspended flowers withough getting hit by a flying Wasp is almost impossible. So this is definitely a kill-before-getting-killed scene. At the start, wait near the long ladder for the Wasps to come down. Grab and bash them as soon as possible and use the special weapons to kill those that landed on the right side. Scene 38 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ In this scene there are a couple of single blocks distributed on the first level and a couple of single and double blocks on the second level. All flowers are suspended in a row way above the second level and are a bit tedious to get to. Also, the balloons rising up from time to time aren't a big help and can savely be ignored. At the start, there are five Spiney enemies dropping down to the ground floor. To avoid them, you should immediately run to the left border, create a magic ladder upwards and climb it. Let the enemies pass, then get back down. If you don't mind the tedious flower grabbing use your own ladder to get to the upper left part and start collecting. Create a ladder, climb it and get the flowers within reach, then drop off and float a bit to the right, to the next block. Rinse and repeat until you have them all and EXTRA game starts. Then drop down to the block on the first floor, observe the baddies and time your dropping way down such that you can safely start bashing these Kaburas for their letters. The only thing that may potentially get dangerous is when an enemy rises up on a balloon or when it shoots one of its projectiles upwards. Both cases are easily dodged, though, as they're rather slow. If you don't care about EXTRA letters and have enough spare lives just start killing the Spineys after dodging their initial dropping. Scene 39 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Another scene with Wasps only and a very awkward block/platform and flower arrangement, so easily another one where going for fast kills is the safest way. Observe the Wasps coming down and dodge them until you can zap one. If you're lucky you'll get a Flamethrower or a Revel, giving you the chance to quickly take out more baddies. Else, just wait inside your starting corner and zap everything that wants to come in. Scene 40 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The flowers here are arranged in a double column reaching up to about the third level. To get up, there are five singular blocks at different heights on both side of the scene. Climb them using your magical ladder. Enemy-wise, there are five Spuds falling down to your floor at the start. In order to avoid getting hurt you can either create a magical ladder directly at your starting point (below one of the singular blocks) and climb it, then float over to one of the borders, or you can immediately run to the very left side and use your magical ladder there to get up on the lowest block. Once you're on that block, immediately re-create your ladder upwards again in order to prevent being followed. The very safest way to finish this scene is by simply waiting on one of the single blocks - no enemy can follow you up there. Not the Spuds, and not the Meanies. If however, you don't have the patience or absolutely want some more letters for the last extra life possible, then get way up to the highest block. Again, make a ladder upwards and climb it. Only then drop towards the flowers in the middle and grab as many as you can. It is possible to get them all in one go (if you don't get them all, repeat the climing and floating down). However, be aware that when dropping down like that you may land in the middle of a bunch of enemies (be it Spuds or Kaburas). This takes you to the fourth and last boss battle. Boss Battle - ??? [_0540_] ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ "Ga Ha Ha Ha! Fools!" "RIT and TAM you can't stop me!" After a short introduction by a fiercely-looking demon the final boss battle starts on a completely empty screen. Well, aside from the floor you're standing on. But what's that? The final boss is even smaller than you and nowhere as scary as in the intro? Well, just be patient, he's got some things for you up his sleeve. After enough hits the boss will transform, and this several times. Overall, there will be four different forms and phases, and each form has its own attack pattern you need to adapt to. Form 1 ------ Appearance: The smallest form of the demon, just one block tall. Attacks: He jumps around more or less mindlessly, sometimes higher, sometimes pretty low. Strategy: Follow him around such that you're so close that even his lowest jump will not hit you. This should also be close enough that you can zap him whenever he's landing. Try to stay in the middle of the screen, as he uses the borders to rebound, and this is more difficult to predict. Hits: He takes 8 hits, then he transforms. (Every hit gives 100 points. Rarely, you may be able to get in a double hit for 200 points that only counts as one hit.) Form 2 ------ Appearance: He floats up and grows until he'a about one floor tall. All his features (mask, horns) are more pronounced, he wears a cape. Attacks: He floats way above you, following you around. Once he's directly above you, he swoops down and follows you on the bottom floor for a moment, then goes back up. Strategy: First thing, as for the first form, ladders are no use, stay on the ground floor. Secondly, he never follows you into the very corners. He's a bit tricky to hit, as he swoops down directly from above and doesn't stand still for a moment. Still, there's one safe pattern to get him. Stand still until you see him twitch and jump slightly before he comes down. Quickly run away from him after this luring. You should have about one block between you and him when running. You need to be very quick now: turn around and zap him once (in one move), then immediately run away again a bit. If you have trouble with the timing, you can first study his pattern a bit by just running away. And you know you hit him when his eyes flash and the score goes up by 100 points. This is easily the most tedious part of the whole boss fight. Hits: He takes a whopping 32 hits! Only then he transforms. (Every hit gives 100 points.) Form 3 ------ Appearance: He floats to the center and grows more, until almost two floors tall. His body is fully grown and shaped now. Also, the cape is longer. Attacks: He teleports around the screen and throws five ball projectiles from his right hand at you at a time, arranged in a half-circle. Upon arriving at the bottom floor, they transform into some sort of mini-lions. These then walk towards one of the borders. They can be zapped and eliminated with your rod. Strategy: The first thing is to make sure he's not teleporting to your place. This is pretty easy, though, as he's flickering between his old place and his destination a few times before he materializes. This gives you enough time to get away. Second thing: the projectiles transforming into mini-lions on the ground. You can either build a ladder and just let the minis run through (after dodging the balls) or you can stay on the ground and zap them. The first option also gives you the opportunity to hit the boss when he's a bit off the ground, but dodging the balls is a bit harder and you'll most probably have to change positions anyway when he teleports. Being on a ladder to his left makes dodging the balls easier. Staying on the ground is the safer option, but it will take much longer, as more often than not you won't be able to hit the boss. If you have enough lives accumulated and don't care about losing one, just make a ladder close to him near the center and keep mashing the Fire button. Adapt your position when he teleports and zap on. He should go down quickly and only be able to teleport once or twice. Hits: He takes about 48 hits, give or take a few! Then he transforms. (Every hit on the boss and every ball/mini-lion eliminated gives 100 points. So if you're going for highscore, here's your chance to score infinitely.) Form 4 ------ Appearance: After his last growth phase he's as tall as the whole screen. He really is the tall demon knight with bull horns now, as he was in his short intro. His cape is now rolled into shoulder pads. Attacks: He just stands in the center of the screen. He has a repeating pattern of shooting a chain of fire out of his mouth downwards, which propagates on the ground floor to the border and out of the screen, and as a second attack a stomping move after which four rocks fall down from the ceiling, two on each side. Strategy: Touching him, as usual, is a bad idea, so there's not much running around and you've got to stay on the side of him you are now. As flames he's shooting are indestructible, you'll need to get on a ladder to be safe. Best create one such that there's one block between it and his foot. Thus you can zap him while on the ladder. Next comes his stomping move with rocks falling. In order to have a bit more time to dodge them, drop off the ladder to the ground after the flames have passed. Here position yourself quickly between the the rocks (they're always falling straight down). Get on the ladder again and hit the boss while the flames pass... Rinse and repeat until he's defeated. If you're a fast button masher, you should see the falling rocks only once. He has a very short moment of invicibility just when he raises his foot for the stomp, but you can simply ignore it and keep hitting him. Hits: Also his last form takes 48 hits until he goes down. He'll then transform back into his smallest form and that's it. (Again, every hit on him gives 100 points.) Beating the final boss nets another 10000 bonus points! "Tam! Rit! Mama!" "Mama was freed by Rit and Tam." "Also, the monster was defeated." "The Tower was now locked forever." "The End" (This is the ending text translated from the Japanese version. Thanks to odino for that!) Congratulations! You've managed to beat the game and rescued Rit's and Tam's mother. --------------------------++++++++++++++++++++++++----------------------------- + (No) Codes & Secrets + [_0600_] --------------------------++++++++++++++++++++++++----------------------------- While (almost?) all other versions of the game have some sort of codes or secrets, I am not aware of any such thing for in the Gameboy version. So if you have a question, or have found a mistake or would like to have something added, don't hesitate to contact me at: DrLagoona (at) hotmail (dot) com __________ Q: What's your highscore in this game? A: It was 763'350 points __________ Q: What's the hardest part of the game? A: Hmm, the game is rather easy. In some levels, especially those with Wasps, it would be quite hard to let all enemies live and go for the maximum amount of EXTRA letters. But even the Wasps aren't as dangerous as e.g. in the NES version. So I'd say the hardest part is staying concentrated and not rushing things when going for EXTRA or when in boss battles, cause that's where you easily lose a life. __________ Q: What are the differences between the English and the Japanese version of this game? Is the Japanese one playable for somebody not knowing the language? A: The only text that's in Japanese are the few story blurbs. And there aren't many (intro, final boss intro, ending). So it's easily playable for non-Japanese people. The only other difference I noticed was that in the Japanese version the player gets 9 lives, while the English version only gives 3 of them, which makes the game slightly harder. However, I've only played the first 10 scenes in the English version, so everything after that escapes my knowledge and experience of differences. This might especially concerns boss fights, but I doubt it. __________ ----------------------------+++++++++++++++++++------------------------------- + Version history + [_0800_] ----------------------------+++++++++++++++++++------------------------------- Version 1.0 - Beat and included all scenes.
