This one covers the GameBoy Color game known as Missile Command. This game is based off an arcade game made in the 1980s by Atari, which had the same name and quite similar principles. It, along with other classics such as Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, and Asteriods, became among a set of immensely popular games that has seen reincarnations across the generations. ... That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Two: Version History **MCOMM_2** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Final - First and likely only version of this FAQ completed. 2:24 AM 12/22/2012 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Three: Legalities **MCOMM_3** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= This FAQ may not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use. They will generally just come from the top of the screen and come down at some trajectory, though, later on, they can split up or even appear in the middle of nowhere. These missiles are on a course to destroy the buildings and cannons at the bottom of the level. Your goal is to protect them, and you do so by taking out their missiles. To do so, you must hit the very front of the line - its lowest portion - with an explosion. Send out a missile with the A or B Button and the missile will go to that spot and explode there. The front of any enemy missile touching that spot will explode, and that explosion will stay for a while, able to take care of multiple missiles and other enemies. Yes, there are other enemies. Primarily, the smart bomb. Along with the missiles, as early as level six, you'll have to stop these from hitting your precious cannons and buildings. They are a bit tougher and require several shots to defeat. Finally, there are UFOs, as I call them. These are enemy aircraft that will fly across the screen. In early levels, they are primarily shot down for a nice few bonus points. In later levels, it can easily be seen that they are capable of dropping missiles as well. The level will end when every enemy missile has either fallen or exploded against one of your buildings/cannons/the ground. After this, bonus points are counted up for remaining buildings and missiles. If you have lost all your buildings, the game is over, unless you crossed the 10,000 point line during the level and earned an extra building. If you have remaining buildings, you continue onto the next level. As you progress through the levels, the enemies will get harder - there will be more missiles, sometimes in multiple swarms; new enemies, including new UFOs and smart bombs, will appear; and missiles will fall faster and split up more often. As a bit of a balancer, though, with every two levels, the score multiplier will increase. For example, when at level nine, you have a multiplier of five. Good luck! Tips: ````` ~ Once a cannon has no more missiles, don't bother protecting it. ~ If enemy missiles are heading for an enemy lot, and other missiles are a threat, don't shoot the empty-lot missiles. ~ Try to think ahead. When a missile is moving, it will move along that track until it explodes or divides up. So, yes, you can use the Start Button to sort of "cheat". Additionally, account for the time that it will take your missile to reach where it is going - always go ahead of your desired target by a fair margin. This is primarily mentioned because, one, the target will move fairly quickly and, two, your explosions will stay for a decent while. ~ Try to be somewhat conservative, but not *too* conservative. Don't use a lot of blanketing shots on everything, in other words, but don't be afraid to shoot missiles either. Also, don't bother with UFOs, really, unless it is the end of a level. Sure, you may not get the bonus for the missile you shot at it, but, until Level 41 (x21 multiplier), it won't matter at all. ~ Try to keep the screen divided up in some way. You don't want one cannon to shoot missiles from one side of the screen to the other. Try to keep the left cannon shooting the left half, and the right cannon shooting the right half. ~ Okay, I know most people will do a "blanket shot" at some point. This is when you shoot multiple missiles in a straight line to try and hit a lot of oncoming enemy missiles. Well, to do it properly, first keep in mind the whole screen division thing mentioned earlier. Also, don't be afraid to be a little farther away. You have to account for missiles to go to their destination AND explode while the enemy is always going. This will need to be used probably starting around level four, five, or six. ~ If a bunch of enemy missiles are coming towards one of your buildings, you may want to consider actually letting them hit it, but usually if you're only ~2,000 points from the next extra building and it is not your last. This is because enemy missiles will make explosions, like your own, and you still derive points from them. Scoring: ```````` The only real purpose of scoring is that you will earn an extra building for yourself with every 10,000 points you earn. Also, note that these are the base values of each thing, and are not affected by multipliers for the purposes of this list. O=============================O===================O | Action | Points Earned | O=============================O===================O | Destroy one enemy missile | 25 points | | Destroy one smart bomb | 50 points | | Destroy one UFO | 100 points | O-----------------------------O-------------------O | Missiles remaining bonus | 5 points each | | Buildings remaining bonus | 100 points each | O=============================O===================O A few of the multiplier's fun facts: - You can find your level number by taking which stage you have this multiplier on (i.e. your first for x3, or second for x6) as part of your knowledge. Multiply the multiplier by two, then subtract one if you're on the first stage for that multiplier. The multiplier is therefore equal to: [(level #)/2] rounded down. - By the time you reach Level 199, buildings and UFOs net you extra buildings. - By the time you reach Level 399, smart bombs net you extra buildings. - By the time you reach Level 799, destroyed missiles net you extra buildings. - By the time you reach Level 3,999, extra missiles net you extra buildings.
