It was these versions that took a gigantic step forward to greatly increase the number of Pokemon available to use, movesets that open up new strategies, and a whole bunch of additions such as gender, shinies, breeding, eggs, and much more. Haven't played Gold or Silver yet? Read about the extroadinary changes in this little spoiler-free guide. +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ | {2.0} Changes | +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ Let's start with the changes between old Red/Blue/Yellow. First, if you haven't noticed, every Pokemon has totally new sprites from the front and back. They are also in full color. Pokemon learn new moves and the special stat has been split into two different stats. There is Special Attack and Special Defense. Special attack judges the power of attacks that are the special type.(Fire, Water, Ice, etc.) Special Defense judges how much damage you take from them. Some attacks from R/B/Y now have different effects. These moves include Reflect. Other sprites also have been updated and some are just plain old new. Pokemon Gold/Silver takes place in a whole different region. It is called Johto. Although the game does not say anywhere that it takes place after the original, that seems to be the case. Red(Ash/Satoshi) and Blue(Gary/Shigeru) are in the game as bosses. One Gym Leader gets a promotion and Giovanni of Team Rocket seems to have previously been thwarted by you know who. You also have a new rival who's much more badass than your last one. Battles haven't changed that much. It's still the basic four move movesets and based on turns. There are some new and added effects though. Whenever you start a battle, a digitized pokeball appear. There are more variations of battle music. Your rival gets his own song as well as the Elite 4. The attacks get a whole bunch of new special effects. There is an intersting new addition to battle strategy though. That is holding items. You can give your Pokemon items to hold that can have special effects. For example, if you give a Pikachu Leftovers to hold, it will gain a little bit of HP each turn and it doesn't count as an item used! Every Pokemon in the game has an entire new movelist. The moves are now closer together in level compared to the previous Pokemon. Combined with the new set of TMs and HMs, Pokemon traded from RBY and Egg Moves, you can get quite a variety of different Pokemon with different movesets. For those Pokemon battle freaks, the hidden numbers (DVs, EVs, etc.) have changed. The formula is different, but I'm unsure of what it is. You're probably best off asking the message board at GameFAQs. Menus have changed a lot of the better. You backpack has slots now. You can carry 20 normal items. There is a different slot to carry as many TMs/HMs as you want. There is one more for key items so you don't have to have items that clog up PC/item space(*coughsstickercough*) and one last one for Pokeballs. It's much more convinient. When viewing Pokemon, you can see the base power and accuracy for attacks as well as small descriptions. Pokemon summary pages also allows you to scroll back and forth. In the options menu, you can select which border you want for your menus. A nice little addition. You also have a new option called PokeGear. This option has a radio that lets you listen to some interesting information, a map, and a telephone. The phone allows you to record a certain amount of phone numbers. Trainers can sometimes give you numbers. They can decide to have rematches with you carrying stronger Pokemon! Some numbers are required for game progress though. A tiny little addition is that you mother collects money after every battle to save up for you. You can also deorate your room with dolls that you buy at stores or stuff that your mom buys you. Ever wonder if your Pokemon is a guy or a gal? Well, now you know. MOST Pokemon have genders now. Some are genderless. This is for breeding. You can now breed Pokemon to get eggs. The egg will contain a Pokemon at level 5. So what's the advantage of breeding? Well, you get special egg moves that can only be recieved by breeding. You can also pass on one-time TM moves. One more thing you can do is pass on shiny Pokemon. Shiny Pokemon are special Pokemon with inverted colors. They're VERY rare. Every Pokemon has a shiny form. They don't have any special abilities though, just there for bragging rights. There is also a special virus called Pokerus. It's good though, so don't worry about that. The best, most unique feature in Pokemon Gold/Silver is time. Only in Gold/ Silver is there visible night/day. The game keeps track of what time it is in real life. It also keeps track of what day of the week it is and daylight saving's time. In the daytime, Pokemon that live in the day come out. Some are Pikachu and Pidgey. At night, others come out such as Zubat. Some Pokemon are out 24/7. The day and night has even more functions though. Some attacks like Synthesis will have different effects depending on the time of day. It will recover more health in the daytime of course. Some Pokemon will also evolve differently depending on the time. Speaking about evolutions, some of the old Pokemon now have some new evolutions/pre-evolutions. A few to mention are Golbat and Scyther. There's also a new method of evolution: trading with items. If you allow a Pokemon to hold an item and trade it, it may evolve. Do you miss Kanto? That's OK. At the end of the game, you can still revisit. I'm not going to tell you how though, that's for you to figure out. You can still get 16 badges in the game, but not face the old Elite 4. Speaking of Kanto, trading with Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow versions are still available after some time in the game. You can also battle, but the Pokemon must be available in the previous versions and they can't have any of the new moves. Many people ask if there's still a Pokemon duplication code. There is, and it also doubles up as Pokemon item code. It does not come in mass quantities though. Between Pokemon Gold and Silver, there's isn't that many changes. If you look carefully, some Pokemon have different sprites. There are still exclusives between each version(you also have to trade from RBY to finish your Pokedex). The opening screen of the two versions are different. Gold has Ho-oh during the day and Silver has Lugia during the night. +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ | {3.0} New Pokemon | +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ Here's a list of all the new Pokemon and a quick description about them. #152 Chikorita #153 Bayleef #154 Meganium This group are grass Pokemon that resemble dinosaurs. A: To be honest, I don't know. It's not naturally in the game, but it might be possible to get via Gameshark. Q: Is there a faster way to duplicate items? A: Nope. Q: Is Kanto exactly the same as it was in RBY? A: No. Many places are smaller to conserve space in the game. You don't visit all the towns in order and the Gym Leaders have different Pokemon. Some caves are also sealed off. Q: Does Kanto have the same music as the original? A: Nope. They're remixes of course. ;) Q: Can you find the same Pokemon in Kanto as the original? A: No. They're slightly changed. +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ | {5.0} End | +~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ Thanks for reading this short guide and I hope that it helped.
