What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (2/24/11): The first version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rainbow Islands: Bubble Bobble 2 is a fun vertical platformer, originating in the Arcade. This version is the European release, which is different from the NA/JP ones, as this one is more similar to the original Arcade version. There are seven islands, and your objective is to simply get to the top of each vertical level by jumping and using rainbows both as stairs and as means to attack enemies. It is addictive in nature, and actually a lot of fun when you realize just how much is packed into this game. There are many secrets as well, most notably the Diamonds you can collect. Either way, this will keep you quite busy, but you will not be disappointed by it! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Start: Pause/resume the game Control Pad: Moves the character A: Jump B: Shoot rainbow ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ================ General Gameplay ================ This game is a platformer where the main objective is to move upward through the levels. Your character can either jump or attack by shooting rainbows, which have multiple uses. First and foremost, a rainbow can be used to attack an enemy in front of you. If you are on a ledge and create a rainbow directly ahead, you can walk (NOT jump) onto it to stand on top, allowing you to jump and reach higher platforms. If you jump onto a rainbow, it will collapse, dropping down through the ledges below and hurting any enemies down there. In order for an enemy to yield a Diamond, you must drop rainbows on them in this fashion. You can learn more about collecting Diamonds below. When you defeat an enemy normally by using a rainbow, they will drop an item which can be collected for extra points. Every third enemy killed will drop a special Powerup which will certainly help your character out (more on those in a later section). If you are touched by an enemy, you will lose a life. You start with three lives. Lose them all and you will be able to continue from the current Round. You also only have three continues; use them all up and the game is over, forcing you to enter your initials if you had a high score before starting over again. ======= Islands ======= There are seven worlds (Islands) in the game, with each one composed of four levels (Rounds). In each round, you will need to reach the top of the area to continue to the next one. You do this by jumping from ledge to ledge while defeating the enemies along the way. Along the way are checkpoint ledges of sorts, designated by signs with numbers on them. That way, if you pass that ledge and you die, you will start at that point again. At the top of the level, you will reach the Goal, where a treasure chest will drop various items worth 500 points each for you to collect. You will then go on to the next round. At the top of the fourth and final Round of each Island, you will face a boss enemy. The bosses have health meters at the top of the screen, and each hit will remove a bar from it. Clear the entire meter to defeat it. Attack using your rainbow attacks, and you will receive bigger versions of various food items at the end for added points. If you collected the seven Diamonds through the course of the four Rounds, you will also receive a Big Diamond. If you collected the seven Diamonds in the correct order, you can enter a secret door upon reaching the boss, where you can grab an even more special Big Item as well as the Big Diamond. Following this, you will go on to the next Island. Insect Island: The first island features insect enemies that crawl along or fly in the air. The Crow can be annoying since it hatches from an egg before flying at you intermittently to attack. The boss is the Giant Spider, who simply bounces up and down in the room towards you. Keep your distance and hit it from the side with rainbows to succeed. Combat Island: The second island has military-themed enemies, including tanks and helicopters. Many of them have projectiles which you must avoid as well as the enemy itself. The boss is a Giant Helicopter. It flies back and forth rather slowly, but periodically lines up with your position and resumes the same pattern. The best approach for that is to attack by dropping rainbows on it from above while moving back and forth. Monster Island: The third island has, as you would expect, monsters as enemies. The Skeletons can be bothersome as they can move quickly after you. The Giant Vampire is the boss here, and it is difficult since it is unaffected when touching already placed rainbows. The key then is to drop rainbows on him from above or attacking directly. Be careful of the Bats that fly around during this battle, defeating them as necessary, too. Toy Island: Various types of toys will be the standard enemies on the fourth island, including claws, balls, and teddy bears. The Balls will be the tough ones as they can bounce around the area, increasing speed as they turn from yellow to red. The boss is a Giant Clown, who along with multiple smaller Clowns, bounce around the room to attack indirectly. Luckily, this makes the boss's pattern quite predictable so you can plan your rainbow attacks accordingly. Doh's Island: The fifth island pays homage to the Arkanoid arcade game, by the name. Enemies consist of various objects, all of which bounce or fly around the room. This can become rather dangerous, which means you will need to exercise caution when progressing. The boss is Doh from Arkanoid as well. It does not move, but will throw Cards at you, so wait for that to begin before using rainbows to get over them and attack it directly. Robot Island: The sixth island is robot-themed, and the enemies are all types of robots or robot parts. The robots are rather fast, so you need to be quick on your feet to evade/attack them. The boss is a Giant Robot, as you would expect. It attacks by shooting fireballs and punching at you; try your best to avoid those by jumping around while hitting it directly with your own rainbows to attack. Dragon Island: The seventh and final island has a medieval flare to it, since the enemies are dragons and knights, among others. Most of the enemies are airborne in this area, so be prepared when making your way upward. The boss is a Giant Dragon, who may be a bit tough since it is hard to get past. Try to attack by dropping rainbows on it from above, while avoiding its projectiles. ======== Diamonds ======== One of the more hidden collectibles in this game are the seven rainbow- colored Diamonds. They can be obtained by dropping a rainbow on an enemy from above to defeat it. The playing area is divided into seven invisible columns, and depending on where the defeated enemy LANDS, you will receive a certain color Diamond (from left to right: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). This is crucial to remember, especially since you need to collect them in order from left to right if you want to access the secret room at the end of the Island. If you manage to collect all seven Diamonds on an Island, you will receive a Big Diamond upon defeating the boss. If you got them in order, you can enter a door leading to a secret room (you can do this without fighting the boss, or fight the boss to gain extra points before entering the room), where you will receive a helpful big item. You will still receive the Big Diamond in there. Collecting the seven Big Diamonds is a good idea, but ultimately has no effect on your game at the end. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Regular Items -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The following is a list of the typical (mostly food) items that are dropped by enemies when defeated. You can also get them by shooting rainbows at certain locations on platforms and other locations. Every third enemy defeated will drop a special item, so refer to the next section for more information on those items. At the end of a round, you will receive a variety of items from a chest. They are all worth 500 points each, regardless of their usual value. Special Items -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ======== Powerups ======== As you progress in the game, every third enemy you defeat will drop a powerup item as listed below. These items will aid in your quest, as well as give you additional points. If you die, you lose the powerups you accumulated and must start over again with the Red Shoe. Powerups carry over to the next round. When you defeat the 24th enemy (which would earn you the #8 powerup on the list below), you will get a special powerup based on other conditions.
