INTRODUCTION - ------------------- It's June 2007 and just some time ago Bethesda's Fallout 3 teaser has been published as well as Game Informer's article about it. Despite Bethesda's project has been heavily criticized, it might be good time to refresh old and good Fallout series. Despite the fact that most hardcore Fallout fans perceive Fallout Tactics as non canon, it is still a very good tactical game in the beloved world of Nuka Cola and Iguana on stick. I missed in Fallout Tactics possibility to create your own team. Although that possibility became obvious when patch 1.27 with editor was published, there was no tutorials how to do it. So here it goes. Little late? --------------------------------- - 2. OWN TEAM CREATION TUTORIAL - --------------------------------- a. Installing patch and unpacking .bos file Obviously you will need Fallout Tactics updated to version 1.27 with editor. Most "gold editions" or re-editions are already updated, so before you apply patch, check which version of FT:BOS you already have. To do so just launch the game and check numbers in lower left corner of screen. Before you use editor to alter game files you must make backup copy of Entities_0.bos file in core directory: ..your path to game...\Fallout Tactics\core\Entities_0.bos Some versions of editor unpack and work directly on .bos file, but in most cases you will need to manually unpack Entities_0.bos file. Just copy this file somewhere, preferably to rather accessible place, and rename it to Entities_0.zip and unpack it using WinZip, WinRar or freeware 7-Zip. b. Altering recruit files and updating .bos file Now launch Fallout Tactics Editor either from Start Menu group or from game directory: ..your path to game...\Fallout Tactics\FT Tools.exe Choose option "Entities editor". In the upper menu choose "File" then "Open". Using file browser go to the location where you unpacked Entities_0.bos. Go to: ..your path to unpacked Entities_0.bos...\entities\recruits\ You will see files of all recruits. Open file hf03.ent, which is the file of your very first recruit "Farsight". To recreate her use button "Make". You will see familiar character creation screen. Just distribute all attribute points, traits, tag skills and skill points. You can also rename character, change age and colours. NOTE: For some reason changing colours for Farsight and Stitch make no effect in the game. Farsight has black suit and Stitch has dark grey. Also changing avatar is rather complicated. NOTE: For sake of compatibility do not change gender or race or it may result in some erratic behaviour of game. When you're done apply changes and once again open menu "File" then "Save as" and save your character file somewhere. Exit Fallout Tactics Editor and go to your renamed file Entities_0.zip. Open it with WinZip, WinRar or 7-Zip and go to: \entities\recruits\ Now insert updated hf03.ent file into the archive to alter it. Rename updated Entities_0.zip to Entities_0.bos and move it to game core directory: ..your path to game...\Fallout Tactics\core\ Launch the game and start new character. In the first mission Farsight should have your altered statistics. c. List of recruit files dc01.ent - dc04.ent : Death Claws go01.ent - go06.ent : Ghouls hf01.ent - hf16.ent : Human females hm01.ent - hm16.ent : Human males ra01.ent - ra05.ent : Bandits rv01.ent - rv04.ent : Reavers sm01.ent - sm05.ent : Super Mutants tr01.ent - tr05.ent : Tribals Other files are recruits or actors that can be found in special encounters. Tribals, Super Mutants, Reavers, Bandits, Ghouls and Death Claws recruits are available only after reaching certain stage in the game and sometimes after fulfilling some secondary mission aims. Most of original BoS soldiers will be visible in the recruit pool for you after reaching high rank within the order which is dependant on your main character's charisma. If you want to create one team at the beginning of game to play whole game with it, you will need to alter files of recruits that are accessible to you after mission one despite your low charisma or rank. That will be: Farsight: hf03.ent - She will accompany you from the first mission Torn: hf11.ent - She can be hired after first mission despite low charisma. Stitch: hm09.ent - He will accompany you from the first mission. Robin: hm01.ent - He can be hired after first mission despite low charisma. Jax: hm05.ent - He can be hired after first mission despite low charisma. So to create your very own team just alter this files and update the .bos file as described earlier. Note: Despite being level one recruit, Torn has already one perk: Bonus HtH Attacks. You must remove it manually by pressing "Perks" button on the main edition screen and setting it from 1 to 0. Also Robin is little overpowered character who has one additional attribute point. If you use "Make" button, you won't be able to finish this character. You must first manually decrease one of main attributes of Robin by the value of 1. You can do it from main edition screen under button "Stats". d. Additional hints After you complete mission at Brahmin Woods and recruit your own designed soldiers you should restore original Entities_0.bos. Save the game and exit, then just replace your modified .bos file with your original backup. Changed recruit data is stored in your savegame, so you will loose nothing. It is important because sometimes packing and unpacking .bos files corrupts them which can result in erratic game behaviour and crashes to desktop. ------------------------------------- - 3. YOUR OWN "TOUGH GUY" MODE TEAM - ------------------------------------- Making whole team of gifted snipers efficient in any weapon makes the game almost too easy. So if you're making your very own wonder team to beat the game, try "Tough guy" mode which gives you double XP instead of possibility of saving the game during the mission. a. Stats Here I will present my personal wonder team that beat the game in tough guy mode with rather no problems. * Mortuus, squad leader [your own character] ST: 7 PE: 10 EN: 7 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, Big guns, Sneak Used books: Small guns (after reaching 120%), Science, Outdoorsman Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 140% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk * Crescentia, female sniper [build on Farsight, hf03.ent] ST: 7 PE: 10 EN: 7 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, Sneak, Lockpick Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 100% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk * Aurelia, female sniper [build on Torn, hf11.ent] ST: 7 PE: 10 EN: 7 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, Traps, Lockpick Used books: Traps (after reaching 120%) Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 100% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk * Infernus, male trooper [build on Robin, hm01.ent] ST: 10 PE: 8 EN: 6 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, Big Guns, Sneak Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 140% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk * Irreus, male trooper [build on Jax, hm05.ent] ST: 10 PE: 8 EN: 6 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, Barter, Repair Used books: Repair (after reaching 120%) Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 100% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk * Cordus, male medic [build on Stitch, hm09.ent] ST: 10 PE: 8 EN: 6 CH: 2 IN: 10 AG: 10 LK: 2 Traits: Small frame, Gifted Tags: Small guns, First Aid, Doctor Used books: First Aid (after reaching 120%) Perks: Awareness, Educated, Sharpshooter, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (Energy Weapons), Action Boy, Action Boy, Sniper Skill points distribution: - Rise all tagged skills to: 120% - Rise big guns skill to: 100% - All unused skill points invest in energy weapons after the tag perk NOTES: - You don't need luck in tough guy mode. You need real fire-power. - You don't need charisma, your recruits are available from the beginning. - By the end of game your every soldier will have 12 AP and will be able to make three shots from energy weapons with skill around 230-260%. - Tough guy mode gives you double experience, but in fact it will give you only two or three more levels at the end of game. What it really gives you is challenge and two-four levels more than you would normally have, which is very good until middle of game. b. Missions hints More experience and your own designed team will give you much more firepower. In fact nobody would be able to withstand your frontal assault of six snipers except mutants. Altough there are couple of missions that are more complicated by some hostage situations in fact there are only two missions where you will be facing real threat. This is by no means walktrough, just a set of hints. Overall hints: - Kill first, then loot: first kill all your opponents, and if all your team members survived start looting (this will spare your time due to fails). - Liberate first, then kill: start mission from doing the hardest part, then switch to easier aims. (you will have less letdowns if you fail at the end) - Hold finger on enter: every time unexpected fight occurs, press enter to switch to turn based mode (use team-based turn mode). This will give you chance to think and plan or withdraw without losing your soldier. - Sneak often: you will see you enemy before he sees you. Missions: For most missions you will need no specific hints. Just use normal walktroughs if you really need them. Your team will be almost overpowered, since all of your soldiers are snipers proficient in any type of weapon. Four of them are good in sneaking, and one of the sneakers is able to wield Browning M2 which will be the key in the hardest mission of Fallout Tactics. In fact there are only three missions that will give you some troubles, Quincy, St. Louis and Osceolla. In fact robots won't give you any sensible resistance because all of your characters will have 170%+ in energy weapons when you will actually start using them. Quincy: The toughest mission of the small guns period. First disable the alarm siren. Then go to the building with the civilian hostages. This is the hardest part. Shut down lights and make your four main killers start to sneak. Wait until beast lord female wearing detonator passes the entrance. Just after that in the stand position sneak just out of the corner and hit turn based mode. First shoot female with detonator, then two guys in front of you, and using sniper shots take down the second group by the other side. If you succeeded without any civilian looses liberate ghoul hookers by sneaking around the brothel. One group should take the north entrance, second shall sneak up to the window. Stand up and hit TB mode. In the same time take down two melee beast lords near the windows and they guy near the north entrance. After liberation of hookers save the ghoul from the deathclaws in northern-west part of map. After that kill rest of beastlords and using underground tunnel go to the prison. While sneaking go to the roof and prepare for taking down most of the beastlords in 2-3 turns to save the life of the prisoner. St. Louis: Grab APC, kill nearby mutants and arm with heavy guns. You should have already all your characters with 100% or 140% in heavy guns. Clear most of map without much looting. Grab Sniper rifle from chest in bunker north-east from your starting location and from a mutant on the rock near the central-east part of map. Stay in APC and clear whole fire trenches by moving APC over them (it is possible). Using snipers clear east coast of the mutant isle, while they stay in APC. Then move your APC to the south bridge entrance to the isle. Be very patient and wait till your snipers take down two mutants with Brownings M2 as they will instantly kill you in closer combat. After they are dead grab from some corpses in the trenches grenades and throw them on the entrance. There are mines that cannot be spotted or disarmed even by your very good traps master. Just thrown grenades until all mines have exploded. Then sneak to the base with all your sneaking soldiers and arm the one with 10 strength with a Browning, then clear mutant fort. After that continue completing normal mission. Osceolla: That is by far the hardest mission in the whole game. Prepare for many fails. Use only metal armour here, as environmental armours will completely destroy your sneak skill. What you should be afraid of is Browning M2 which will mainly instantly kill your soldiers. There are two gates guarded by two Brownings M2: South and West. There are two mutant patrols which are using Brownings, and they are going around south and west gate. First go behind the northern destroyed building and prepare ambush for first patrol. In TB mode kill first the mutant with Browning M2 and then the mutant near the alarm trigger. Then clear that area. Take your sneaking Browning M2 trooper to the building on east and quietly dispatch mutants there. With your sneakers prepare ambush for second patrol. Then sneak up near to the wall to the south gate. Get your one sniper in front of the gate in the safe distance, then hit TB mode. Use your sniper to attack mutants with Brownings. They should have fire back on overwatch mode. Switch to your sneaking team and attack them from flank. You must take both of them in one turn or you're toasted. Wait for some melee mutants to come out and gun them down. Then sneak with your team inside the camp and go behind the south gate. Use the same tactics. Use sniper to make mutants fire in overwatch mode then gun them down from behind. Now get your team sneak around the camp. Avoid minefield and while sneaking go under the platform. Get your sneaker with Browning there and someone to support him. While sneaking use ladder and just after reaching top hit TB mode. You should be able to kill both mutants without taking much damage. Now climb all of your sneakers on the platform and start sniping down the camp. After a while send sneaker with Browning to espionage and kill single mutants with SAW's. Destroy all gas and oil tanks to avoid being killed by side effect of bursts of your enemies. When you have cleared the camp, take everything worth to the extraction point. After you go to the underground and kill Gammorin most corpses will be gone. No more tips are needed, just be careful while going down and killing Gammorin.
