My urge to cover more SMS FAQs however has never wavered and that is why I'm back today in the newest SEGA Master System Completion Project which is hosted on the FAQ Contributors - General Board. I have recently become the top contributor for the project, and at the moment I'm trying to help this project become bigger than the last. For this I'm choosing Double Hawk, a strange game where the controls form the biggest obstacle to play the game. I'm not going to list a detailed walkthrough as it isn't mandatory for this type of game. I'd be even surprised if you managed to read this while playing the game. It is meant to learn you how to play the game and reach the end. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2- Gameplay [A200] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =============================================================================== 2.1- Story [A201] =============================================================================== In the early 1990s, violence was spreading across the globe, and the disturbances centered exclusively around a group of international terrorists whose purpose is to terrorize and massacre the innocent. The United Nations ordered two seasoned veterans, John Jackson and Jack Thomas, to destroy the syndicate. It will be a hard battle and only YOU can finish it. It isn't an original story, but at least it gives us a big reason to start shooting up all the enemies that appear before us. =============================================================================== 2.2- Controls [A202] =============================================================================== Double Hawk seems like an ideal Light Gun game, but the game is played without the accessory. It wouldn't be hard to think of a good alternative for the light gun, but they didn't succeed in that aspect. The controls for this game ended up very illogical. Because of one illogical choice, the entire game becomes unplayable if you don't have the manual anymore. That is why I have added this section to my guide, including this lengthy introduction. It starts off easy. You shoot with the '1' button and you throw grenades with the '2' button. Moving left also isn't a problem, you just need to move left or right on the D-Pad. It becomes difficult however when you just need to move the cursor. Smart people would try to move using the D-Pad, but that isn't a possibility. You can't move the cursor that way. You can only move it by using the D-Pad WHILE you are pressing '1' to fire. This means you need to keep firing to move over the screen and hit all the enemies. _____________________________________________________________________________ / | \ | Shoot | Shooting is very easy in this game, you just need to press 1. | | | You can't run out of bullets, so you don't need to worry that | | | you won't have enough firepower. You can only run out of ammo | | | for your secondary weapon. | \_____________|_______________________________________________________________/ | | | | Grenade | The regular soldiers can be defeated using bullets, but don't | | | try them on the tanks. They don't do damage, so you need to | | | use the grenades. Luckily they are easy to use: aim and throw | | | them by pressing 2. | \_____________|_______________________________________________________________/ | | | | Move | The game is played like a light gun shooter, which means you | | | have minimal room to move. You stand at the bottom of the TV | | | screen and you're free to move left or right. Moving is done | | | by pressing left or right on the D-Pad, like you'd expect. | \_____________|_______________________________________________________________/ | | | | Move Cursor | Now you have learned how to shoot and how to move, now you | | | need to combine them to actually move your cursor. You start | | | by pressing 1 and now you can move the cursor using the D-Pad | | | in any direction. Don't forget to let go to move yourself. | \_____________|_______________________________________________________________/ =============================================================================== 2.3- How To Play [A203] =============================================================================== The game is a fairly simplistic shoot-'em-up for the SEGA Master System where you stand on one screen and can move to left or right to evade bullets. Most people will just try to shoot as many people as possible, but it is way better to avoid enemy fire instead of firing continuously. This way you can also try to catch the different power-ups. There is no real strategy to beating the game except for paying attention and catching as many power-ups as possible. With this in mind, you won't have any trouble beating the game on Easy or even on Difficult. The game can be played with two players, both appearing at the same time, making the game a bit easier. The game consists of five missions, each divided in four levels and ending with a boss fight. Each level ends when the time meter at the top screen ends up at zero. You only need to survive to reach this point in regular levels to move on to a new level. Throughout the game the player must eliminate various enemies including foot soldiers, armed vehicles, and helicopters. The amount of enemies keeps increasing throughout the game, but your strategy at handling them should stay the same.
