INTRODUCTION =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Many of you have probably seen my NES endings guide on gamefaqs. That is and will always be a work in progress, as I will never finish every single NES, Famicom, PAL, Homebrew and other 8-bit related Nintendo game ever made, if only because of the language barrier for some of them and the fact that I simply will run out of time before I pass away. The NES was my first true love when it came to video games, but in high school I had this friend who had something called a Sega Master System. He would talk about games like Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd but since I was so entrenched in all things NES I just ignored him. It wasn't until I stayed over his house one night and he introduced to some of these games that I realized how cool the SMS was. A year or so later I got the new Sega Genesis for Christmas. I felt like I was betraying Nintendo, but the games were so cool and the graphics were so much better than 8-bit. A little while after this I saw something called a Power Base Converter at Toys R Us. Upon further inspection I noticed that it was designed to play SMS games on a Genesis. I had gone into the store to buy a new game and ended up leaving with the converter. The next day at the mall I ventured into KB Toys and they had a bunch of really cheap SMS games in the bin in the front of the store. Needless to say I stocked up on about 5 or 6 SMS games and got myself hooked. In the late 90s I got an actual SMS on eBay and a Pro Action Replay to help me make codes, but ended up losing interest. Now, over 10 years later I have rediscovered SMS games and want to finally get to the bottom of mysterious games (to me) like Zillion, the Wonder Boy series and many other gems. This guide is being created mainly so I can look at it years later and remem- ber my SMS gaming exploits by looking at the ending descriptions, which should ring a bell years from now as memory fades. It is also designed to help any- one playing the game figure out just how many levels/stages/rounds there are in a particular game and possibly if there is more than one ending or even no ending at all. Spoilers abound throughout this guide, so if you don't want the ending to a game spoiled for you, DO NOT continue reading. Also, if there is a game that you cannot find in the guide that you are curious about, I am always open to suggestions that will help someone out. I make a lot of my own gaming cheats using Kega Fusion in order to finish most of the games, so there is a good chance I will eventually finish most of the 8-bit Sega games, barring a few that will probably be thorns in my side until I leave this place. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= III. THE GAMES =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The following is a list of the games included in this guide. If you have any special requests, please email them to me. There are separate sections for SMS games released in the USA, Europe, Brazil, Japan and even for the SG-1000 games, the predecessor to the SMS. Omar Cornut has even ventured into Taiwan to document SMS games released there, so a Tai- wan section may even be added some day. Oh yeah, we can't forget the SMS pro- totypes that get discovered as well. Wonder Boy Zaxxon ================== A. SMS GAMES (USA) ================== ACTION FIGHTER (Sega) -This game is very similar to Spy Hunter for the NES, except it is harder and it has an ending. There are a total of 5 missions in Action Fighter. They are very long and difficult missions at that. If you finish this game without the use of any of the built in codes or PAR codes, you're probably not entirely human. When you get to the end of Mission 5 you will have to face off against two battleships. They come on the screen one at a time, so you will have time to hammer the first one with 30 shots and destroy it before the second one makes its appearance. When you finally lay waste to the second one you will get a light blue screen with a letter from the President that reads AT LAST YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ALL YOUR MISSIONS. WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED PLAYING! SO LONG! It goes to the GAME OVER screen and then to a RANKING LIST screen that shows the high scores, which you should be on if you managed to finish this. Then it returns you to the title screen. Not much fanfare, but it was one of Sega's early SMS games, released in 1986. AERIAL ASSAULT (Sega) -A decent shooter with long levels. There are 3 modes of difficulty to play through. If you choose Easy Level you will only have 4 Missions to complete. Upon destroying "EL" at the end of Mission 4 you will get a pic of your plane flying away from the explosion with the words CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR MISSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THE EVIL FORCE HAS BEEN DESTROYED AND THE WORLD IS SAFE. YOU HAVE BECOME A TRUE WARRIOR. TIME FOR PRACTICE IS OVER. NOW, CHALLENGE THE NORMAL OR HARD LEVEL. THERE YOU WILL FIND THE REAL ENEMY. GOOD LUCK! Nice, I love that you don't get the same ending if you play the easiest difficulty that you get if you beat the hardest. Now play through Normal Level and when you defeat the "EL" laser at the end of Mission 4 instead of getting the ending message you got before you will get the following message at the bottom of the screen: AMAZING SKILLS! WE'VE JUST LEARNED THAT THE N.A.C.'S LAST REMAINING FORTRESS HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN DEEP SPACE. ALTHOUGH IT SEEMS TO HAVE ENORMOUS FIGHTING CAPABILITY, YOU MUST DESTROY THE FINAL ENEMY. FREEDOM FIGHTER, SPEED SKYWARD FOR ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD! Now you will begin Mission 5 (unavailable for play on Easy Level) which takes place in deep space. When you manage to defeat the boss (flying space station) at the end of the mission you will get a scene showing your plane on the ground with you waving from the cockpit and a bunch of people waving back to you. The message on the bottom says CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR MISSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THE EVIL FORCE HAS BEEN DESTROYED AND THE WORLD IS SAFE. HAVING OVERCOME SEVERE TRIALS, YOU HAVE AT LAST BROUGHT FREEDOM AND PEACE TO THE WORLD. THE DARK ERA HAS ENDED AND A NEW HERO IS BORN..... It will fade to black and several screens of staff credits will show up followed by PRESENTED BY SEGA then back to the title screen. Now if you manage to beat it on Hard Level you will get the same ending screen waving to the people, but the message will be a bit different: CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR MISSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED. YOU'RE THE GREATEST WARRIOR ALIVE!! HAVING OVERCOME TREMENDOUS TRIALS, YOU HAVE AT LAST BROUGHT FREEDOM AND PEACE TO THE WORLD. THE DARK ERA HAS ENDED AND A NEW HERO IS BORN... WE'LL NEVER FORGET THE NAME OF "FREEDOME FIGHTER," THE SAVIOR WHO DELIVERED US FROM DARKNESS. Not a huge difference, but again, cool that all 3 difficulty level endings weren't exactly the same. AFTER BURNER (Sega) -This is the Sega version of Top Gun. It is not the same as the NES game by Konami, but is pretty similar. There are a total of 18 stages. At the end of Stage 18 you must destroy a heavy bomber. It is one of the toughest bosses in any video game and one that took me over 20 years to beat (thanks to some invincibility codes created by Pugsy). The missiles it fires at you do not miss you, so you have to shoot them with your guns. If you can somehow manage to avoid them and take some shots at the bomber, you may get lucky and des- troy it. When you do it will show your ship landing on the deck of the Sega Enterprise aircraft carrier. It then goes to a blue screen showing a picture of the pilot, who looks exactly like Tom Cruise from Top Gun, with the words MISSION COMPLETE below him. The next screen shows your crew standing outside your plane congratulating you and the third screen shows what looks like your commanding officer shaking your hand on a job well done. It then goes back to the title screen from here. ALEX KIDD IN HIGH TECH WORLD (Sega) -A neat little platform/action game starring Sega's early mascot, Alex Kidd. You start the game Alex's castle where he has to go up and down the 5 floors of the castle getting clues and finding the 8 pieces of the map to the new arcade in town, High Tech World. Most of the game takes place here and it is kinda like the Linus Spacehead game for the NES and SMS, where you just roam around talking to people looking for clues. Once you have the whole map you find the Hang Glider and fly to the next area, the Ninja Forest. Now the game actually converts to an action game, where you shoot and jump, killing ninjas and other pests that get in your way. Once you make it through the forest you end up at the Village. This is the 3rd main area of the game and there are no enemies. You just go into buildings looking to buy things and talking to people. If you happen to go into the burger shop at 14:00 hours you will get 1000 coins. Go to the Temple and pray 100 times and you will get the pass that lets you go to the 4th and final area of the game, the Animal Forest. Here you will fight ninjas and other animals like in the Ninja Forest. When you get past the bridge and the end and do away with a couple red ninjas walk off the screen to the right and you will go to a screen with the Hi Tech World arcade. The next screen will show Alex playing Outrun, a popular Sega game at the time with the words PRINCE ALEX HAS FINALLY REACHED THE ARCADE 'HIGH TECH WORLD!' beneath him. HEY! THESE SEGA GAMES ARE GREAT! he says. PRINCE ALEX'S ADVENTURE IS OVER. MAYBE YOU WILL MEET HIM AGAIN SOMEDAY! He turns to you and points a finger in the air. It then returns to the title screen. A pretty cool mix of puzzle and action here, though I don't know how any player would know to pray 100 times to get a pass. ALEX KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD (Sega) - ALEX KIDD IN SHINOBI WORLD (Sega) -If you are a fan of Alex Kidd or Shinobi, you should enjoy this one, as there are many elements from both series found here. There are a total of 4 Rounds. In each Round there are 2 action stages and 1 boss fight stage. In Round 4, Stage 2 you will fight 2 of the previous bosses again. When you finish that Stage you will go to the final stage of Round 4, the boss battle against Hanzo. Battle him just like you do the final boss of the original Shinobi. He has 3 forms you have to defeat, but is much easier than the final boss in Shinobi. When you defeat all 3 forms of Hanzo he will disappear in a cloud of smoke. The screen will turn black and then Alex will run to his girlfriend. The soul of Shinobi leaves Alex's body (he grows noticeably smaller) and goes to the top of the screen and says CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU, ALEX, ALL IS DONE. Alex replies THANK YOU FOR YOUR GUIDANCE. It then goes to a bright blue screen with Alex and his girl standing in flowers as staff credits zip by above you. END appears in pink script and it stays here until you press a button. When you press a button it returns to the opening sequence of the game, which shows you in that same field with the girl that you are in during the ending. ALEX KIDD - THE LOST STARS (Sega) -One of the 4 Alex Kidd games released for the SMS in the USA (BMX Trial was a 5th Alex Kidd game, released in Japan only). This one is a pure platformer as you guide Alex Kidd through 7 stages to get to the end, then 7 more stages to get the game's true ending. At the end of Stage 7 you will reach the Zig- gurat sign and finish the stage. It shows the Statue of Liberty in front of a planet and some other celestial body (nebula?) and the screen scrolls up to show another planet and heavenly body, then 6 orange globes float up into the screen and turn into 6 constellations. It then send you back to Stage 1, which is really Stage 8 (beginning the 2nd Quest). The stages look the same as they did but there are some subtle differences. Now play through the game again and when you reach Stage 7 again (Stage 14) get to the Ziggurat sign and it shows the Statue of Liberty again and the constellations just like before, but this time it says THE END instead of sending you back to the beginning. Then it goes back to the title screen. Kind of cheap making you play through the game a second time just to get a screen that says THE END. Guess Sega wanted you to get your money's worth back in 1988. ALF (Sega) - ALIEN SYNDROME (Sega) -One of the all time classic SMS games. This was one of a handful of games that was ported over to the NES through the unlicensed company called Tengen. There are a total of 7 stages. In each stage you must rescue the prisoners and when you find them all the exit will open to the boss. When you get to Stage 7 you do not have to go through the stage like in the previous 6 stages, but will instead go directly to the final boss, a weird looking brown creature with an exposed brain and eyes on the side of its head, called Mr. Mimi. When you defeat it you will get the ROUND 7 CLEAR screen showing your points and then it will go to a black screen with the following message: EPILOGUE IN THE YEAR 2089 EARTH COM- MAND TROOPERS RICKY AND MARY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A MISSION TO RESCUE THEIR FEL- LOW TROOPERS FROM THE INVAD- ING ALIEN FLEET. IN THE COURSE OF THEIR MISSION, THE BRAVE EARTH COMMAND TROOPERS BLASTED THE ALIEN SPACE SHIPS...AND THEIR EVIL LEAD- ERS... OUT OF THE GALAXY. RICKY AND MARY RECIEVED THE MEDAL OF VALOR FOR THEIR BRAVERY. BUT TEH BATTLE HAS ONLY BE- GUN! IN THE BLACKEST REACHES OF SPACE...MILLIONS OF LIGHT YEARS FROM KNOWN TERRITORY... THE ALIENS THIRST FOR RE- VENGE! WHEN THEY RETURN, RICKY AND MARY WILL BE THERE, READY TO ONCE AGAIN FIGHT THE ALIEN SYNDROME! The ALIENS STAFF will scroll after the message and show a handful of the games creators then it will show Ricky and Mary embracing in front of the starry background and THE END will appear above them. It will then go back to the title screen. ALTERED BEAST (Sega) -This is similar to the arcade/Genesis hit but not as fun and missing the cave stage. There are a total of 4 stages to play through. In each stage you control the warrior who can collect an orb to change into the muscular ver- sion of himself and then another orb to change into the chosen beast of that stage. When you get to the end of the stage if you are in beast mode when Neff appears you will fight the stage boss. If you are in human form you will continue through the stage until you meet Neff again. If you are still not in beast mode then you will play through one more time and when you reach Neff for a 3rd time you will then face the stage boss regardless of whether you are still a human or beast. When you finally reach the boss of Stage 4 it will be the final battle against Neff, in demon form. He is a nasty rhino on his hind legs and will come at you, so you need to be quick and jump over him and hit him, then jump back over him and hit him again. If he backs you to the side of the screen you are pretty much done for. Once you finally defeat him it will go to a screen with your ROUND CLEAR BONUS of 100,000 points and a dove fluttering around. The dove will eventually land and trans- form into the lovely Athena. The beast runs toward her and changes back into human form while the words GAME OVER appear above them. The music plays for awhile and you are then brought to the title screen. This is a pretty lousy ending, as there is no ending message or staff credits, but at least those few Altered Beast fans who owned a Master System got to play this in glorious 8-bit. ASTRO WARRIOR (Sega) -This shooter was a very early SMS release, coming out in 1986. There are only 3 stages to play through: THE GALAXY ZONE, ASTEROID ZONE and NEBULA ZONE. There will be a boss at the end of each stage. When you defeat Belzebul at the end of Stage 3 it will say SURELY REVIVE BELZEBUL like it says for the other bosses. You then restart at Stage 1 (Galaxy Zone). You can play through the game multiple times (I went through it 6 times) but it will always send you back to Stage 1 after beating Belzebul and you will never got an ending, as it is a continuous loop. Not a bad early shooter, but an ending would have been nice, even one screen that congratulated you or something. AZTEC ADVENTURE (Sega) -There are 10 stages to play through here. When you finish all 10 stages you will be allowed to play through an 11th final stage, comprised of all the bosses from the game. Fight through them and you will face the final boss, what looks like an Aztec painting of a giant bird. It's head will pop out from its body, so just attack it until you defeat it. It will then go to a screen showing the fairy princess in front of a pink door. You walk in front of the door and it opens, bathing you in sunlight. The next screen shows your sur- prised face looking on with the words AT THE COMPLETION OF THE LONG JOURNEY, OUR YOUNG HERO HAS AT LONG LAST LOCATED PARADISE. WHAT DID HE DISCOVER THERE? THAT REAL PARADISE LIES ETERNALLY IN THE PERSON WHO DREAMS OF IT. WHY DON'T YOU ALSO VENTURE FORTH INTO THE WORLD IN SEARCH OF YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL UTOPIA. FOR ONLY WITH SUCH A DREAM, WILL YOU FIND THE MEANING OF TRUE HAPPINESS. You are then brought back to the title screen. Not a bad old game for the SMS if you can get past the extreme slowness in which your character moves. BLACK BELT (Sega) -This game was released in Japan as Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star on the NES) and is a simple early SMS fighting game. There is an interesting twist to the ending though. There are a total of 5 levels (called Chapters) to fight through. At the end of each Chapter you will enter a big mode where you fight a boss. When you beat the tough boss of Chapter 5, named Rita, you will advance to Chapter 6, which is just a boss battle (no action sequence) against the final boss Wang. Where him down and defeat him with a standing punch to the face. It will show that he has some energy left and he will do an odd sleep-walking type thing and then raise his arm in the air, but he is indeed defeated. You will then walk off the screen where you will find your girlfriend Kyoko. You pick her up and walk of the screen and get the follow- ing message: YOU'VE FINALLY DEFEATED THE BOSS AND TEMPORARILY BROUGHT PEACE TO THE WORLD. NOW WITH THE EXPERIENCE YOU'VE GAINED AND KYOKO'S LOVE TO SUSTAIN YOU, CONTINUE TO BATTLE ONWARD TO AN EVEN MORE ROUSING VICTORY. It will stay on this screen for a bit then go to a red screen with a Japanese symbol on it before eventually returning to the title screen. Pretty simple ending but the game was released in 1986. However, there is a secret twist! When you get that ending message after defeating Wang, if you held down the 1 and 2 Buttons and continuously pressed Up and Down on the controller, when the music stops it will send you to Chapter 7!! In this Chapter you must de- feat all 6 bosses in a row, including Wang...not an easy task! If you manage to defeat Wang this time through the screen flashes and after he raises his fist in the air and it tallies your points it goes right to that red screen with the Japanese symbol on it then back to the title screen. It would have been nice to get a different ending after beating Chapter 7 but at least the programmers threw that secret bit into the game. BLADE EAGLE 3-D (Sega) -A decent overhead shooter by Sega. The biggest difference between this and most shooters is that you can press a button to fly closer to the ground or stay higher off the ground. This makes a huge difference, as certain enemies can kill you if you are low and certain enemies get you if you are higher up. As for the stages, there are a total of 9 to blast through. They are not num- bered but you will know when you finish one because your ship fades into the screen and it goes to a status screen before moving on to the next stage. It wouldn't have killed them to throw a stage number on that status screen, would it? Anyway, there are 2 or 3 mini-bosses in each stage and most of them have an end boss. When you get to Stage 9 and make it to the end you will face off against a snake like creature with the head of one of Ridley Scott's aliens. This is the only boss that doesn't show up more than once in the game and rightfully so, seeing how he is the final boss. He takes some serious damage but when you finally destroy him it will show your ship flying back to Earth and then you get a black screen with the following message: CONGRATULATIONS ON ACCOMPLISHING A MOST DIFFICULT MISSION. YOU AND YOUR EYES HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT TO A MUCH NEEDED REST. It will then show your score and return you to the title screen. Neat message. BOMBER RAID (Sega) -This game looks like it could be in the 1942/1943 series of games. It is a straight-forward shooter and there are only 5 missions you must go through to beat the game. There is a big boss at the end of each mission (tank, bomber, etc.) and at the end of Mission 5 you must take out a giant aircraft carrier. It is actually pretty easy to defeat, as you just travel the length of it, taking out gun placements and aircraft along the way. When you defeat the carrier it will go to the score screen that says THE MISSION IS FINISHED!! like it usually does after each mission. It will show the NUMBER OF WEAPONS DESTROYED and give you the usual bonus for that. It will then say CONGRATULA- TIONS THE BATTLE IS OVER. It then goes to a cutscene of your plane landing on a colorful little runway followed by a screen showing a pic of your commanding officer handing you a medal and you wearing the medal in a 2nd pic with the words THE BATTLE IS OVER above you. The screen will then start scrolling the staff members and end at PRESENTED BY SEGA 1988. You are then returned to Mission 1. CALIFORNIA GAMES (Sega) - CAPTAIN SILVER (Sega) - CASINO GAMES (Sega) -This is a very slick gambling game programmed by Compile but released on the SMS by Sega, as every game was in that time period. The games to choose from on this cart are poker, blackjack, baccarat, slots and pinball. You can move in between the games and play whichever one you choose but the pinball game seems to be the only one that you just play for fun and do not win (or lose) any money on. The object of the game is to make $1,000,000. It does not mat- ter which game you play, as long as your total earnings make it past the $1 million mark it will trigger the ending. You start off with a measly $500 so the task of reaching $1,000,000 seems daunting, but there is a password sys- tem, so if you are patient and very lucky you can reach that amount. When/If you happen to clear $1 Million it will go to a screen showing a casino em- ployee with a cigarette in one hand motioning you to exit the casino with the other hand. I assume he is kicking you out because you fleeced the casino and not inviting you to a private room. He does wink at you however before the screen fades out and goes to another screen showing you lounging by the pool with a drink and two babes nearby. The following words scroll by on the bottom of the screen as you swig down your drink: YOU DID IT. YOU'VE MADE A MILLION. CONGRATULATIONS! You then lift your head from the chair and give the peace sign and show your pearly whites before you are returned to the title screen. I am willing to be that less than 1% of the people who owned this cart back in the day ever saw this ending. CASTLE OF ILLUSION STARRING MICKEY MOUSE (Sega) - CHOPLIFTER (Sega) -This is an old SMS release, coming out in 1985, based on Dan Gorlin's 1982 original version of Choplifter. There are a total of 3 Regions (rounds) to play through. In each Region there are 64 hostages but you need to rescue 40 of them to advance to the next Region. The only problem with this is that you can only carry 16 at once, so you will have to do a lot of flying to get all 40 hostages to safety. When you complete the first 3 Regions it returns you to the first Region but now it is night time. Finish this next set of 3 Regions and you will actually get a STAFF credits screen! So yes, there is an ending to Choplifter, albeit a one screen staff credit list. Here is that screen: THIS SEGA VERSION OF CHOPLIFTER WAS CREATED BY THE FOLLOWING: STAFF: MAIN PROGRAMMING: DRUNKARD KAGI PROGRAM ASSISTANCE: DUMB MURO GRAPHIC DESIGN: FUNNY FUKU SOUND EFFECTS: HAIRY UWA COORDINATOR: PRINCE YAMA CHOPLIFTER WAS LICENSED FROM BRODERBUND SOFTWARE INC ©DAN GORLIN 1982 REPROGRAMMED BY SEGA 1985 After this screen it goes back to Region 1 (day time) with your score intact and the Regions will just keep repeating over and over. The credits screen will eventually show up again 100s of Regions later, but you will never get that far in the game unless you are using cheats, so I would consider beating the 6th Region and seeing that credits screen as beating the game. CLOUD MASTER (Sega) -This is a straight-forward shooter. Released in Japan arcades (and on the Famicom) as Chuka Taisen, it was developed by Hot-B and licensed by Taito but like most games on the SMS was released by Sega. There are only 5 Rounds to fight through. Each Round has a big colorful boss to defeat at the end of it. When you get to the end of Round 5 you will face off against the Shogun. Blast away at the flashing skull on his belly and he will be defeated in no time. It will then go to the usual Round end screen showing your character (named Michael Chen) standing in front of buddha holding a crystal ball with Japanese writing on it. The monk says: YOU ARE GREAT! ACCEPT A NEW TITLE AND 100000 PTS. YOU'VE LEARNED MUCH. The screen then fades to basically the same screen showing buddha with a bigger dialogue window that you this message: THUS, THE END OF THE LONG JOURNEY OF MICHAEL CHEN. CHEN, AS HIS WISH HAS BECOME THE STRONGEST SUPERHUMAN IN THE WORLD. PEOPLE PRAISE HIM AND CALL HIM THE GREAT "CLOUD MASTER." It will stay on this screen until you hit Button 1. Press it and you get a GAME OVER screen then it returns you to Round 1 with your score intact. COLUMNS (Sega) -This was Sega's answer to Tetris. Basically the same game, but here you must match 3 or more of the same color to break those color blocks. There are 2 games you can choose from: ORIGINAL and FLASH. In ORIGINAL you get to select the Difficulty (Easy=4 colors, Normal=5 colors, Hard=6 colors) and the Level (speed 0-9). For every 50 blocks you break you go up to the next Level. There is no ending in ORIGINAL mode. The level goes up to 9 and the blocks come down at ridiculous speed. I would probably say breaking 50 blocks at Level 9 speed could be considered mastering this, as it doesn't go up to Level 10 but stays at Level 9 no matter how many blocks you break when you reach this point. In FLASH mode you must destroy the one flashing brick that is at the bottom of the pile. You can select the Difficulty and how High you want the blocks to be stacked. The higher the blocks are stacked, the harder it is to get to the buried block to destroy it. Also, as you break blocks the level will go up, which increases the speed in which they fall. The ultimate challenge in FLASH mode is to set the Difficulty to Hard and the High setting to 9. How- ever, even if you manage to get to the flashing brick and break it, no matter which setting you are playing on, you will get the same "Ending." All it does is put the words YOU DID IT! in the middle of the playing area. It then un- ceremoniously dumps you back to the title screen. There is also a 2 Player game as well as a Versus game, but these are just played against another hu- man opponent. Would have been nice to see a credits roll. CYBORG HUNTER (Sega) -A decent action game by Sega where you must enter into 7 different areas of the cyborg base to find Vipron, the final boss. The 7 areas are divided by letter (Areas A through G). You can play Areas A, B and C in any order but must get the ID card from the boss in Area C to get into the next section, which has Areas D and E. Beat the boss of Area E and you get the ID card that gets you to Area F. Beat that boss and you get the final ID card to get to Area G, where you will find Vipron. Play through his Area, defeating the les- ser cyborgs along the way until you reach him. Beat him in battle with your psycho gun and the blond girl that gives you messages (Adina's her name) will appear and say PALADIN, YOU'VE DONE A GREAT JOB! EVERYBODY IN THE BASE STATION IS VERY PLEASED. THE LAST STEP IS TO RETURN TO THE BASE STATION WHERE YOU WILL BE WELCOMED AND APPLAUDED FOR YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT. THIS WILL BE OUR LAST CO- MMUNICATION. SEE YOU NEXT AT THE BASE STATION. You then get a starry back- ground and it shows images of PALADIN, TREVOR and CATHERINE followed by THE END in big yellow letters. The staff credits flash by and it returns to the title screen. DEAD ANGLE (Sega) -I had no idea this was a sequel to Empire City 1931 until I read the great FAQ written for the game by hundley4ever. The game is a straight-forward shooter like its Famicom predecessor and there are no hidden items that you need to find to properly finish the game. There are a total of 6 Stages. In each stage you have a certain number of enemies you must kill before you face off against the stage's boss. When you finally make it to Stage 6 (THE BOSS) you will have 50 enemies you have to take out, including the bosses of the previous stages. When you get the enemy count to 0 you can shoot out the glass wall that is in front of the final boss (who is holding your girlfriend hostage) but make sure you hit the boss and not the girl. It takes just one shot to kill him, but if you hit the girl you will get the message YOU MISTAKE and have to start the stage over from the beginning. When you plug that last boss it will show a really cool cut scene of him flying backwards out of the window, complete with shattered glass sound and then go to a screen showing you standing in front of your girl with the words YOUR SWEETHEART IS SAFE. YOU PUT THE CRIME BOSS IN THE BIG SLEEP. GOOD JOB. It then switches to a scene showing you holding her in front of the shattered window with the famous Humphrey Bogart line HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID written below. An appropriate end to this 30s style gangster game. Godfather type music continues to play for a bit before THE END appears on the screen. Pressing a button brings you back to the title screen. DICK TRACY (Sega) - DOUBLE DRAGON (Sega) -The classic beat-em up game has 2-player simultaneous action on the SMS, something it did not have in the NES version. There are a total of 4 Missions to play through. At the end of Mission 4 you will face off against the gunman named Jeff (he's referred to as Willy in the NES version). When you defeat him your girlfriend, Mary Ann, will drop into the room and walk over to you and give you a nice full hug. A big pink heart floats up away from you and then the screen turns black and it says MAY YOU LIVE HAPPILY FOREVER in purple letters followed by PRESENTED BY TECHNOS JAPAN CORP. REPROGRAMMED BY SEGA in teal letters followed by THE END in yellow script. Pressing a button brings you back to the title screen. Now, if you happened to be playing alongside a 2nd player and he is still alive after you defeat Jeff, you will have to duke it out with him/her. When you defeat your brother (or he defeats you) the brother who wins will embrace Mary Ann like in the 1-player ending and the ending will proceed like it did before. Pretty cool that they let the 2 play- ers fight it out like that. E-SWAT (Sega) -This is a pretty short side-scrolling action game consisting of 5 stages. Each stage has 2 sections, each with its own boss. When you get to the final boss (2nd boss of Stage 5) you must destroy the 4 green orbs stationed around him. Once destroyed he will appear on the ground. Destroy the 5 sections of his shield and he will be defeated. It will show you walking away from the inferno as the staff credits appear to the right of you and end with PRESEN- TED BY SEGA. It then goes to a screen showing what looks like your soldier's helmet and blaster along with a bunch of bullets lying on the ground in a spotlight with the word END beneath it. It then brings you back to the title screen. As for the EASY or NORMAL difficulty settings, they only affect game- play, as the ending is exactly the same for both settings. The ending could have definitely had more thought put into it. ENDURO RACER (Sega) -A cool little motorcycle racing game by Sega where you must race through 10 stages before your time runs out to finish the game. There are a ton of jumps you must make and other opponents you must pass on each track as well as ob- stacles to be avoided, like the water in one of the stages. After you finish Stage 5 it will go on to Stage 6, but the stages background repeats here be- cause Stage 6 looks like Stage 1. However, when you finish Stage 10 the game does come to an end and isn't one of those games that send you into an infin- ite loop with no satisfaction of seeing an ending. After you cross Stage 10's finish line it will show the usual screen that shows your lap time for each stage and the amount of opponents passed. It then goes to a screen that says CONGRATULATIONS! YOU SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED ALL OF THE STAGES! RECORD [YOUR BEST TIME HERE] The screen then starts to scroll and says "ENDURO" IS A SYM- BOLIC JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE VIA THE MEDIA OF A RACE. THE RESULTS ARE INSIGNIF- ICANT AND WHAT REALLY COUNTS IS COMPETING. OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE ARE THE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED CONCERNING ONE'S SELF FROM THE VARIOUS ENCOUNTERS YOU EXPERIENCE ALONG THE WAY. THERE IS NO VICTOR OR LOSER IN THIS TEST OF ENDUR- ANCE. THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY MATTERS IS THAT YOU MAKE A COMMITMENT TO BE- GIN THE LONG AND TRYING TREK. THIS GAME IS THEN DEDICATED TO ALL OF THE "LIFE RIDERS" WHO HAVE STARTED OUT ON THE SOLITARY TRIP TO FIND THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL LIMITS. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, MAY WE SINCERELY CONGRATULATE YOU ON A PERFECT RUN. THE END. It returns to the title screen after that. I'm guessing the Sega employee who came up with all that gibberish probably now resides in a group home somewhere. F-16 FIGHTING FALCON (Sega) - FANTASY ZONE (Sega) -Classic Sega game that launched the somewhat significant career of the Opa Opa character. This colorful shooter has 8 rounds. When you reach Round 8 you will have to take out all of the previous 7 bosses once more. Do this and you fight the giant Opa Opa. It shoots what looks like snakes out of its opening and you must blast the head of the snake to make the line it trails disappear. Once you blast several of these snake heads the giant Opa Opa will move into the center of the screen and its eye will flash. It then goes to a bile colored screen and the following message scrolls by: OPA-OPA (THE PLAYER) HAS NOW DESTROYED THE INVADING ARMY AND RESTORED PEACE TO THE "FANTASY ZONE". HOWEVER, HE HAS MIXED EMOTIONS BECAUSE HIS LONG LOST FATHER WAS THE CHIEF OF THE ENEMY FORCES. ONE BURNING QUESTION THAT WILL REMAIN WITH HIM UNTIL HIS DYING DAYS....."WAS MY VICTORY REALLY WORTH THE PRICE I HAD TO PAY?" THE END. The staff credits will scroll by and it will bring you back to Round 1. It says Round 9 but playing through the game again is just for scoring purposes and doesn't change the ending. FANTASY ZONE II - THE TEARS OF OPA-OPA (Sega) The sequel to Fantasy Zone also has 8 rounds and in Round 8 you have to fight through every single boss again, just like in the first one. The rounds in this sequel have more to them, as you have various warps to take to different areas in the round, but the gameplay is pretty much the same as the first one. When you defeat all the previous bosses again in Round 8 you will enter a room where a spider will come after you leaving a trail, kinda like the final boss of Fantasy Zone. Destroy the spider and the trail will disappear. After you defeat 4 of these you will get to fight your twin. He takes some doing to beat and even has a life meter, but once you take him out you will both fly to the right and meet up with your father (the giant Opa-Opa from the first one). A tear will fall from your ship and land on your twin, destroying him. You and your father will exit the screen and the following message will appear: WITH THE RIDDLE OF "WHO IS THE ENEMY'S MASTERMIND?" FURTHER DEEPENING, THE WAR COMES TO AN END. PEACE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE RESTORED TO THE FANTASY ZONE. SPACE YEAR JUNE 29, 6226. The screen will go blue and and a long message will scroll by, complete with several funny pictures of thought bubbles coming from Opa- Opa. The message reads: WHO WAS THE MASTERMIND LEADING THE ENEMY FORCES THAT SO CLOSELY PHYSICALLY RESEMBLED OPA-OPA AND FOUGHT WITH THE SAME FUNCTIONAL WEAPON? IT WAS IN REALITY, OPA-OPA'S OTHER SELF. DUE TO THE EMOTIONAL STRESS BROUGHT ABOUT AS A RESULT OF A WAR DURING HIS CHILDHOOD, HE DEVELOPED A DUAL PERSONALITY OF VIRTUE AND VICE, UNKNOWN EVEN TO HIMSELF. ONLY HIS FATHER WAS AWARE OF THIS FACT. SPLITTING INTO 2 SEPARATE BEINGS, HE BECAME IN ADDITION TO HIS ROLE AS THE HERO, THE ENEMY'S MASTERMIND, THUS BECAUSE OF THE PATERNAL BOND EXISTING BETWEEN THEM, HIS FATHER HAD NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO ASSUME THE ROLE OF THEIR LEADER. NOW, AS A RESULT OF OPA-OPA'S COURAGEOUS VICTORY, THE EVIL BEING THAT DWELLED IN HIM HAS BEEN DESTROYED. DEEPLY MOVED, OPA-OPA CAN NO LONGER CONTAIN HIS TEARS, WHICH AS THEY FALL, SIGNIFY HIS RETURN TO THE SOLE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. OPA-OPA VOWS THAT NEVER AGAIN WILL WAR OCCUR. THE END. Was all that really necessary for such a whimsical shooter? It then re- turns to the title screen. FANTASY ZONE - THE MAZE (Sega) -This game definitely plays more like Pac-Man than it does any Fantasy Zone game released previously. There are 7 Worlds in this game: PLALEAF, TABAS, LA DUNE, DOLIMICCA, POLARIA, MOCKSTAR and POCARIUS. They, like many other names in the Fantasy Zone series, are extremely unique. Anyway, you must play a total of 51 Rounds in this game. There are 4 rounds in each world (the 4th is always a bonus round). Once you play through Round 28 you go back to PLALEAF and continue on to Round 29. The levels are new, you are just in the same world you played earlier. Play through 6 of the 7 worlds for a 2nd time but you won't be playing MOCKSTAR a 2nd time because the game ends on Round 51 (which is the 3rd stage of POLARIA...you don't get the bonus stage this time). When you finish Round 51, which has the dots you must collect spelling out the word END, you will get a black screen with the following message scrolling across in yellow letters: EPILOGUE. OPAOPA AND UPAUPA HAD FINISHED THEIR BATTLE TRAINING. THEY WERE RECOGNIZED AS A CLASS SOLDIERS AND ALLOWED TO CARRY TWIN SHOT AND SINGLE BOMB WITH EACH OF THEM ALL THE TIME. AFTER THAT OPAOPA ENJOYED A WORLDWIDE FAME FOR HIS ACTIVITY IN THE BATTLE OF FANTASY ZONE. ON THE OTHER HAND, UPAUPA'S WHEREABOUTS HAS BEEN UNKNOWN EVEN SINCE. Nice Eng- rish there. The scrolling ends with THE END and goes back to the title screen. GALAXY FORCE (Sega) -There are a total of 5 Missions. The first 4 missions are selectable as you go and you can do them in any order (once you beat one of them). The weird thing is that Mission 1 is called Scene A, Level 1. Mission 2 is called Scene B, Level 2 and so forth. Just know that the first 4 missions have an above ground section and an underground section. Once you finish all 4 of them you go to a final mission where you will only have one section where you will go through the level and a green ship will keep crossing your path. Eventually it will stop and you can destroy it. This is actually the final boss. When you defeat it you will get the MISSION CLEARED screen and then it will show your ship landing on the space carrier. The cockpit hatch will open and your pilot will wave while the following text appears above you: THANKS TO YOUR OUTSTAND- ING COURAGE AND EFFORTS FAR BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY, THE EVIL FORCES OF THE FOURTH EMPIRE HAVE NOW BEEN COMPLETELY DESTROYED. NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE OF THE JUNOS SYSTEM, BUT ALSO EVERY SINGLE CIVILIZATION IN THIS GALAXY GIVE A RE- SOUNDING OVATION TO YOUR ACHIEVEMENT. YOUR NAME SHALL BE LONG REMEMBERED AS THE ACE OF THE ACE COMMANDERS IN THE GALAXY FORCE. THE END. It then shows some cool (for the time period) digitized staff pics (called THE CREW) and ends on the PRESENTED BY SEGA screen before it goes to a score screen and back to the title screen. GANGSTER TOWN (Sega) -There are a total of 6 scenes in this light phaser game, as well as an intro- ductory practice round and 2 bonus rounds mixed in where you have to find a key hidden in a wall. When you reach Scene 6 (The Harbor) and get to the boss at the end (who totes a machinegun), blast away at him until he expires and it will go to a black screen that says CONGRATULATIONS! It will show a scene where you are running up the street and will say YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ACCOM- PLISHED YOUR MISSION below you. The next scene will show a couple of the gang- sters swimming away from the harbor and will say THE GANG HAS LEFT THE TOWN. PEACE HAS NOW BEEN RESTORED TO THE PEOPLE. It goes back to you running and says STAY ON AS A SPECIAL AGENT. It will show you your TOTAL HITS and TOTAL HIT RATIO and will give you a rank, which will be a letter grade with A being the highest. The next screen says THE END and it goes back to the title screen. GHOST HOUSE (Sega) -This game can be a pain, as there is no recovery time between hits and in the later levels you get bumped around by enemies like crazy, but it has its own unique charm. The object in each round is to awaken 5 Draculas from their coffins and kill them. When you kill the 5th one and get the gem it leaves behind you must find a special door located somewhere in the round. Find it and you are off to the next round. It has been thought for awhile that there are only 3 rounds and they repeat after Round 3, but I found out that they only repeat once. When you finish Round 6 (which is the same colored back- ground as Round 3) and enter the exit door you will get the usual black screen that says CONGRATULATIONS! It will display all 6 sets of the 5 gems you received from defeating the vampires in each round. Below this it will say LAST SPECIAL BONUS. 500000 PTS. NOW YOU CAN NOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS GAME. THANK YOU! It then says PLAYER 1 GAME OVER and goes back to the title screen. Normally this irritates me in a video game but I can live with it here be- cause (1) I thought the game would repeat infinitely and (2) it is one of the older games, coming out in 1986, so I was pleasantly surprised by the end game here. GHOSTBUSTERS (Sega) -This is the same Ghostbusters game that got released on the NES, Commodore 64 and several other systems and was created by David Crane. The SMS version has a few tweaks but the gameplay is pretty much the same. Drive around the city looking for buildings infested with ghosts. Catch them in traps and re- turn them to headquarters. Go out again and catch more ghosts. There is a PKE meter that will fill up 3 times during gameplay. When it fills up for the 3rd time (it will be red) if you have made at least $10,000 then you will be able to confront the Stay-Puft Marshmallow man in front of the Zuul building. Now you must get 2 of your Ghostbusters past the Marshmallow man and into the building. Once inside, you must get your Ghostbuster up the stairs and to the door at the very top. Here you will confront Gorza. He is guarded by 2 of his dogs who will also take shots at you. Note that his named is "Gozer" in the movie. Keep taking shots at him while avoiding his and the dog's shots and if you can get his meter completely depleted you will win the game. It goes to a green screen where you get the following scrolling message: CONGRATULATIONS! WE THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS. YOU HAVE SAVED THE CITY AND WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE HERO WHO ANNIHILATED GORZA, THE GOD OF DESTRUCTION. FOR YOUR GALLANT EFFORT, YOU HAVE EARNED A REWARD OF $5000. UPON AWAKENING FROM A DEEP SLUMBER, GORZA ATTEMPTED TO DESTROY OUR GREAT METOROPOLIS (sic), HOWEVER .... YOU CRUSHED HIS VICIOUS PLAN AND STOPPED HIM ONCE AND FOR ALL. YOU HAVE THUS RESTORED PEACE AND ORDER TO OUR BELOVED CITY. THE END It will eventually go back to the title screen. If you did not make $10,000 when the PKE meter filled up you got a game over message telling you that Gorza destroyed the city. Also, if you got to the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man but died, or you died in the Zuul Stairwell, you get a different Game Over message and get a password (Account Number) to restart with the amount of money you earned up to that point. GHOULS 'N GHOSTS (Sega) - GLOBAL DEFENSE (Sega) -This game is a unique shooter in that you control a defense satellite that must destroy missiles and enemies invading the Earth. The unique part is that each stage is divided up into two separate parts. The first part is the Of- fensive Half, in which your satellite floats through the stage trying to blast every missile and enemy that comes on the screen. Now if you can destroy 100% of the attackers in the Offensive Half, then you will not have to play the second part of the stage, the Defensive Half. However, unless you are an ace you will miss a missile or an enemy or two and will have to play this Defen- sive Half. In it you will be on a screen where missiles will rain down toward the planet and you have to blast them before they reach it. Even if you missed just one missile in the Offensive Half, you will still have a bunch to shoot down in the Defensive Half. If enough missiles get by you and reach the planet at the bottom your meter will fill up and when it gets full it will be game over and they will show a graphic of the missile making landfall with a city. There are a total of 10 Stages to play through. When you finish the Defensive Half of Stage 10 (or the Offensive Half if you were lucky enough to blast all the attackers) the satellite will be picked up by the shuttle like usual and your Bonus points will be tallied up and added to your score. It will then go to a nice screen showing doves flying by the Statue of Liberty. The message CONGRATULATIONS/GLOBAL DEFENSE PRESENTED BY SEGA will appear to go along with the pleasant ending music. If you wait awhile the GAME OVER screen will appear (yes, the game is over, but why give us the same message you get when dying?) and it will go back to the title screen. GOLDEN AXE (Sega) - GOLDEN AXE WARRIOR (Sega) - GOLVELLIUS - VALLEY OF DOOM (Sega) -3 cool things about this game. (1) It was developed by Compile, famous for their shooters (Zanac, Power Strike, etc.). (2) The game is similar to Legend of Zelda, at least in how you explore screen by screen and must discover sec- ret holes to find people to talk to, items and dungeons. (3) The game is named after the final boss. Your goal is to travel through the valley, uncovering the caves of 7 bosses, who you must defeat before you can gain each of the 7 crystals. The only problem is that you don't get a crystal automatically when you beat a boss, but must search for a new hole that will appear somewhere in the area near the cave you just beat the boss in. Then, when you actually find the new hole and enter it, you need to BUY the crystal. You will spend a lot of time beating minor enemies for money, as you need it for everything in this game, like items, weapons and those crystals. Once you find all 7 of them you can enter the cave of Golvellius. Work your way through the cave, defeating a bunch of those big red snakes along the way, and eventually you will make it through, where you will battle Golvellius himself. The setup reminded me of the boss battles in Blaster Master, as you must move around the screen at a slow pace, avoiding the boss and trying to get in a hit whenever you can. If you can manage to outlast him, he will explode and you will exit screen north. It then shows a screen with pics of you and a blonde-haired girl and it says KELESIS DEFEATED GOLVELLIUS ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE. FREED FROM GOLVELLIUS' CONFINEMENT, RENA AT LAST REAPPEARS. ALL SORROW GONE, RENA'S VISAGE BEAMS JOY- FULLY ONCE AGAIN. The next pic shows Kelesis (you) standing with the bag of crystals and says AS THE PAIR EXITS THE CAVE, THE 7 CRYSTALS SHINE FORTH. THE CRYSTALS FLY INTO GOLVELLIUS' BODY (a pic of this appears), WHICH LIVES AGAIN! It shows a pic of Golvellius standing next to you and Rena. NOT THE EVIL GOL- VELLIUS, BUT A KIND AND GOOD GOLVELLIUS! THE DEMON GOALUS HAD TRAPPED HIS KIND SOUL IN 7 CRYSTALS. PEACE AGAIN RETURNS TO THE VALLEY. KELESIS & RENA RETURN TO THE KINGDOM OF ALEID. A pic shows Rena and Kelesis in a room with 2 older people and says KELESIS DECIDES TO JOURNEY ON; RENA DECIDES TO ACCOMPANY KELE- SIS ON HIS JOURNEY. AS THE TWO LEAVE THE KINGDOM THEY ARE MET BY GOLVELLIUS. THE THREE DECIDE TO VENTURE FORTH TOGETHER. KELESIS, RENA AND GOLVELLIUS... (it shows a pic of each of them then switches to a pic of Golvellius walking off into the fading sunset carrying them on his shoulders) SET FORTH ON A JOURNEY TO FIND KELESIS' LONG-LOST SISTER. THE SUN SHINES DOWN ON THEM PRO- TECTIVELY, WATCHING OVER THEM AS THEY SET OFF. It then says STAFF INTRODUCTION and shows the names of the programmers, designers, sound composers and other contributors and ends with TO BE CONTINUED. It then goes back to the title screen. There is a game called Shin Maou Golvellius for the MSX that may be a sequel and for those with iPhones, Golvellius was released for it in 2009 and looks to be the same exact game as the SMS version. GREAT BASEBALL (Sega) - GREAT BASKETBALL (Sega) - GREAT FOOTBALL (Sega) -This primitive 8-bit football game was released by Sega on the Master System in 1987. It's hard to believe the far superior Tecmo Bowl only came out 2 years after this. There are a total of 12 teams to choose from. They are split into two divisions, the AFC and NFC, but the game has no NFL license so the division names and the teams have nothing to do with the NFL. No cities are listed for the teams, just the nicknames. Now on to the game itself. When you pick your team to play as and then pick your opponent, you will notice that the game starts you in the 4th quarter and you are trailing your opponent. Why they do this is beyond me. The game can be difficult enough at times, but to have to automatically fight back to start with only 1 quarter to beat the team seems ridiculous to me. Why not just play an entire game against the CPU?? Anyway, some games you will be behind by not too many points and in other games you will be down by a lot (I started one game down by 35 points!). The other odd thing about this game is that when you score you will get the ball right back again via kickoff. Your opponent never gets a chance at of- fense at all. They can still score points if they record a safety against you or intercept a pass and run it back, but you pretty much have matters in your own hands in trying to come back and win the game. When time runs out after the last play it will go to the 4th Quarter score screen, showing the score and the timer at 00:00 as well as how many yards you gained on the last play and what down it is (or would be if there was time left). The words TIME OUT then show up to signify the game is over. It then goes to a summary screen showing your score, the winner of the game (WIN), how many TOUCH DOWN you scored, your TOTAL GAIN of yards and your PASS COMPLETION RATIO. This is the last screen you get before it returns you to the title screen. A quick little celebration screen would have been nice, but I wasn't really expecting one. There is no tournament or playoff to play through, just single games you can play against the computer or against a human opponent if you choose. GREAT GOLF (Sega) - GREAT ICE HOCKEY (Sega) - GREAT SOCCER (Sega) - GREAT VOLLEYBALL (Sega) - HANG-ON & ASTRO WARRIOR (Sega) -This is a multi-cart containing both games, Hang-On & Safari Hunt. I will list the ending descriptions for both games right here, but know that Hang-On was not released as a separate game in the USA but only on this multi-cart with Astro Warrior and on another multi-cart with Safari Hunt. It was released on cartridge and card in several other countries. As for Astro Warrior, it was released on its own cartridge and on this multi-cart as well as on a multi- cart with a game called Pit-Pot. The FAQ for Astro Warrior on Gamefaqs states that this version of Astro Warrior (on the cart with Hang-On) is the only version that has an ending, which you supposedly get after beating Belzebub for the 3rd time, but I played through the game 6 times and it kept on re- peating as the ending description below describes. HANG-ON This classic Sega arcade game is comprised of a total of 8 Courses. As you command your motorcycle through a course you will notice a number in the upper right corner counting down that says LEFT. When this reaches 0 the course background will change to a different setting (but you are still in the same course). There are 5 different backgrounds in each course and they are (ac- cording to the nice FAQ written by PickHut) Circuit, Seaside, Monument Valley, City Night and Circuit at Sunrise. When you finish the Circuit at Sunrise part of the course you will have finished the course itself. When you finish Course 8 it will say CONGRATULATIONS! on the screen. Your time remaining will be counted down and added to your score. It then says CHALLENGE THE NEXT COURSE like it does after every course, but this time it sends you back to Course 1. Not much of an ending here. Also, choosing 1, 2 or 3 difficulty level does not affect the "ending" at all. ASTRO WARRIOR -This shooter was a very early SMS release, coming out in 1986. HANG-ON & SAFARI HUNT (Sega) -This is a multi-cart containing both games, Hang-On & Safari Hunt. I will list the ending descriptions for both games right here, but know that Hang-On was not released as a separate game in the USA but only on this multi-cart with Safari Hunt and on another multi-cart with Astro Warrior. It was released on cartridge and card in several other countries. As for Safari Hunt, it was also never granted its own cartridge release but is found on this multi-cart as well as a multi-cart with the games Trap Shooting and Marksman Shooting. SAFARI HUNT This Light Phaser game for the SMS is pretty simple. You need to go through each round, getting up to a certain score to continue to the next round, but you need to make sure you do not run out of ammo. There are a total of 69 rounds. When you reach Round 69 you need to get your score to 999,000. When you do this you will get a lime green screen that shows your score and Round number at the top, then you will get the following message: YOU ARE A WONDERFUL HUNT LET'S GO TO THE REAL HUN WITH A REAL GUN A simple message for a simple game, but I'm surprised there was any message here, as this is the only game I know that ends after Round 69. JAMES "BUSTER" DOUGLAS KNOCKOUT BOXING (Sega) -A pretty good boxing game for the SMS. This was released for the SMS in Eu- rope and Brazil as George Foreman's KO Boxing and again in Europe as Heavy- weight Champ. Not sure why it was released under 3 different names in differ- ent regions for one system, but more than likely it was because of "Buster's" waning popularity after his initial beating of Mike Tyson. Anyway, there are only 5 matches you need to win. Your opponents are (1) B. Santana, (2) T. White, (3) M. Williams, (4) R. Bernard and (5) K. Gibson. When you defeat the Champ, K. Gibson, it will show a small picture of Douglas on the screen with YOU WON! written in blue. At the bottom it says: ALL RIGHT! YOU'RE THE NEW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! It goes to a digitized photo of Douglas with his arms raised in victory and this scrolls of the screen and you get this message: CONGRATULATIONS! TODAY YOU SHOWED WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GREAT BOXER. NO MAT- TER HOW HARD YOUR OPPONENT FOUGHT, YOU HELD YOUR GROUND AND WENT THE DIS- TANCE! AND NOW YOU ARE THE UNDISPUTED BOXING CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! The STAFF credits scroll by and it says PRESENTED BY SEGA then goes back to the title screen. JOE MONTANA FOOTBALL (Sega) - KENSEIDEN (Sega) - KING'S QUEST - QUEST FOR THE CROWN (Parker Bros.) -This goal of this classic quest adventure is to track down the 3 treasures of the kingdom and return them to the king, who will in turn give you the throne. The treasures are the Mirror, Shield and Chest of Gold. To find these you must travel through many screens finding items that will let you advance to your next task. Along the way there are elves, dwarfs, gnomes, giants, witches and other beings from fairy tales that you will meet that may help you or hurt you in your quest. When you finally find the 3 treasures and return to the King at the castle and talk to him it will say: THE KING SAYS, YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED IN THE QUEST! I THINK YOU ARE JUST IN TIME. THE OLD KING SAYS: I AM DYING. TAKE MY PLACE WHEN I AM GONE. He will slump over in his throne at this point. Stand on the platform next to him and you will get the following message: CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE BECOME THE NEW KING AND COMPLETED THE GAME! It then goes to your SCORE screen where it shows the score you achieved during gameplay, which goes to a maximum of 255 and depends on how much stuff you collected and what other things you achieved during your quest. It shows your INVENTORY and whether you finished with INVISIBILITY or SHRUNKEN status. It then returns you to the title screen when you press a button. Not a great end- ing but it was nice to see this old PC game ported over to the SMS regardless. KUNG FU KID (Sega) - LORD OF THE SWORD (Sega) -A pretty cool action/adventure game where you must seek out 3 items (book, leaf and herb), each of which will help you progress further through the game. There are towns which hold 1 person you can talk to for info or an item or weapon. Talk to them several times a piece and they may tell you different things that unlock various areas of the game or create new paths to new areas. There are a total of 9 bosses scattered throughout the game. You'll face the Tree Spirit, Swamp Spirit, Pirate, 5 bosses in a row at Castle Eldar, the Fire Beast, Medusa (she's just a statue until you approach her with the Herb in your possession), Dark Suma and finally, Ra-Goan. When you finally take out Ra-Goan in his castle, head to Castle Varlin where you will be greeted by the wizard there who says WELCOME THE NEW KING! OUR LAND SHALL BE SAFE! It then goes to a screen showing the wizard and you with your crown and below it says LANDAU HAS PASSED THE TESTS AND IS NOW THE RIGHTFUL KING! It will then show various citizens from the towns you visited (several of them are just pallette swaps of the same guy) with various comments beneath them: CONGRATULATIONS! RULE THIS LAND FIRMLY! RESTORE OUR LAND TO ITS BEAUTY! THOU ART NOW KING, FORGE A STRONG COUNTRY! The wizard with the long beard says WE HAVE ALL AWAIT- ED THIS DAY! HURRAH FOR LANDAU. The wizard with the blue cape says OUR LAND AND BALJINYA MUST ALWAYS STAND AS FRIENDS! The mayor's daughter says THREE CHEERS FOR LANDAU! WE OFFER OUR DEEPEST THANKS! It then shows Landau looking out over his kindgom and says LANDAU, SOMEWHAT TROUBLED LOOKS DOWN AT BALJIN- YA. FIVE YEARS LATER...BALJINYA WAS PROSPEROUS AND THE PEOPLE AT PEACE... It wraps up with THE END in script and stays here until you reset. MARKSMAN SHOOTING & TRAP SHOOTING (Sega) - MAZE HUNTER 3-D (Sega) -A pretty underrated game where you go through simple mazes looking for a key that allows you to enter the warp tile to exit the area. There are several items you can find, like boot enhancements and suits, but there is only one weapon, which looks like a stick. There are 5 different Areas to play through. Each Area has 4 stages. The Areas are Metal, Rugged, Jungle, Ice and Blaze. There are no boss fights in this game, just finding the exit is all you need to do. When you reach Stage 4 of the Blaze Area you must jump a gap to land on the warp tile that lets you complete this last stage. It will then take you to a screen showing your score and the hi-score and then give you this message WELCOME TO THE HALL OF STRENGTH! YOU HAVE SURVIVED THE LABYRINTH AND ALL ITS DANGERS. YOUR NAME AND THE STORY OF YOUR STRENGTH WILL BECOME A LEGEND AMONG SHIPS THAT HOURNEY THE STARS! NOW GO FORTH INTO THE UNIVERSE TO EVEN GREATER CHALLENGERS (sic). WALK PROUDLY AMONG ALL MEN, FOR YOU HAVE EARNED TEH RIGHT TO BE CALLED MAZE HUNTER! The screen then scrolls to the right, where the word END is etched into the background tile blocks. Pressing a button returns you to the title screen. MICHAEL JACKSON'S MOONWALKER (Sega) -This was one of the better advertised games early in the life of the Sega Genesis, so it was good to see the old SMS get a version. It's a pretty good game for what you would expect, as you play as Michael Jackson and must go through a total 17 stages, rescuing children along the way. The stage layout goes like this: Round 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 6-1 and 6-2. The great thing about this game is that you get used to a certain style of gameplay in Rounds 1 through 5. Once you hit the final Round it all goes out the window. Round 6-1 is like a first person shooter where you must kill 30 enemies running back and forth on the screen. The final Round (6-2) has you transformed into a jet trying to shoot 4 tur- rets that are being manned by Mr. Big. The turrets open and close but will stay closed when you are lined up with them, so you have to get off a shot right when you get in front of one of them and hope the thing is open, other- wise it will stay shut until you move from in front of it. Destroy all four turrets and it will show you (the jet) flying off into a beautiful blue sky and over the mountains. It goes to the staff credit roll as Michael dances off to the side to the song Smooth Criminal. It ends with PRESENTED BY SEGA then returns you to the title screen. MIRACLE WARRIORS (Sega) -Ahh, Miracle Warriors - Seal of the Dark Lord...this was one of my favorite SMS games as a kid. Replaying it over 20 years later I cannot believe I had the perseverance to do all the leveling up and blind discovery that is needed to beat this game. You get to name the main character and your goal in the game is to find your 3 companions and all their weapons, armor and shields. There is a lot of leveling up to be done to raise your character's energy meters, so don't plan on blasting through this unless you are using cheats. When you find your 3 friends and all their special items you must find the 3 keys: Heaven, Earth and Hell. Once you have these keys you can enter the dungeon of Terarin, the final boss. It is the only multiple level dungeon in the game and consists of 3 levels. When you reach Terarin in the 3rd level you will discover that she is a very large breasted green harpy with wings and a tail and large claws. Throw all your magical items at her and then duke it out with the weapons. Once defeated it will say: [YOUR NAME] DEFEATED TERARIN, THE DARK GENERAL IN MORTAL COMBAT! ENTERING THE DEPTHS OF THE SHRINE, [NAME] FINDS A CHEST. WITHIN LAY MAN'S LAST HOPE, THE SEAL OF THE DARK LORD! The screen goes dark and the following message scrolls by: [NAME] AND HIS COMPANIONS CAME TO FULFILL IASON'S PROPHECY AND THE PEOPLE OF THE FIVE LANDS, WEARY FROM DESPAIR, REJOICED. THE ELDERS LED THE MIRACLE WARRIORS TO EVIL'S GATE. AFTER A RAGING BATTLE OF SWORD AND SORCERY, THE EVIL TERARIN WAS DEFEATED. [NAME] TOOK THE SEAL OF THE DARK LORD AND USED IT TO ONCE AGAIN SHUT THE PANDORA PASSAGE; RETURNING PEACE TO THE FIVE LANDS. You will now get a bunch of different townsfolk giving you messages: OLD LADY: THOU WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH MUCH. YOUNG LADY: EVERYONE IN THE LAND HONORS THY TRIUMPHS. OLD MAN: THEY HAVE LONG AWAITED THIS DAY. OLD LADY: THOU WERE ABLE TO SEIZE THE SEAL! DAYS OF PEACE HAVE RETURNED AT LONG LAST. A cool screen showing the King and 2 guards appears with the words: BRAVE [NAME]! I KNEW THEE SURELY WOULD BE TRIUMPHANT! THY FEATS WILL BECOME LEGEND IN THE LAND FOR ALL ETERNITY. Next up are messages from your 3 companions: GUY: THY BRAVERY BROUGHT US TO VICTORY! I WILL NEVER FORGET THEE. MEDI: IT WAS A JOY TO FIGHT AT THY SIDE! FARE THEE WELL! TREO: CALL ON ME TO JOIN THEE IN THY NEXT QUEST. MAY YE NEVER COME TO HARM! The screen goes black with a blue THE END in the bottom right corner with a sword going through it. Pressing a button brings you back to the title screen. This superb SMS game was also released on the Famicom under its Japanese title Haja no Fuuin. It's not identical to the SMS version and does not look nearly as good. MISSILE DEFENSE 3-D (Sega) -This is a very difficult 3-D light phaser game that is similar in gameplay to the arcade classic Missile Command. You must simply destroy missiles and not let them get by you...however it isn't that simple. Shoot as many as you can in the first wave and if any get by you get an opportunity to shoot them down in the next wave. If you end up even letting one missile get to your base it is game over. To finish the game you must defend East City and West City 5 times each. If you manage to successfully defend each city 5 times it will go to a black screen that says 340 MISSILES FIRED - 340 DESTROYED = 0. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. END OF GAME BONUS: 100000. EXTRA LASER BONUS: # X 10000. YOU SCORED ###### OUT OF A POSSIBLE ###### POINTS......AND SAVED THE WORLD! It then returns you to the title screen. A pretty simplistic ending for an old game like this, but I've seen a lot worse. MONOPOLY (Sega) - MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE (Parker Brothers) -This old school computer game got an early SMS release and is extremely hard, especially in the later levels where a lot of the rooms are shrouded in dark- ness. There are a total of 11 tombs you must play through. They each have very similar layouts with slight changes in each as you progress. Each tomb has an Aztec ruler buried in it (though you never come across the tomb as it's only a story telling device). Here are the rulers buried in each of the 11 tombs: Xolotl, Tezozomoc, Kukulcan, Cuitlahoc, Quetzalcoatl, Itzcoatl, Xipe Totec, Tizoc, Ahuizotl, Axaycatl and Montezuma. Every time you find the exit to the tomb it will show Panama Joe making his way into the next tomb. When you manage to find your way through Montezuma's tomb, it shows Joe climbing up into the tomb again, but it is to replay Montezuma's tomb. Unfortunately there is no ending at all, so once you complete MOntezuma's tomb (stage 11) you can consider the game beaten. MY HERO (Sega) -This primitive action game from Sega is not fun, nor does it have an ending. There are 3 unique rounds to play through, each one ending in a punk boss. When you defeat the boss you kneel down with him with your arm raised in the air and your girlfriend kneeling beside you. The boss will then punch you, get up and steal the girl and run off. Then you start the next level. Like I said, there are 3 unique rounds, but they repeat forever. When the counter reaches Round 99 and you finish that one, you will simply play Round 99 again. This was one of the earlier SMS games, so you really can't expect much from it, but at least an ending message after the first 3 rounds would have been nice. NINJA, THE (Sega) -This is a really short action game where you play a ninja named Kazamaru who must fight his way to the castle of the evil Gyokuro to rescue the princess. It's a pretty generic story (and game for that matter) but it is actually fun in its own simplistic way. There is also a secret thing you must do to finish the game, which makes it worthy to be in this SMS game endings guide. There are a total of 13 Steps (the game's name for the stages). If you blast your way through the game without collecting all the hidden Green Scrolls when you finish Step 12 you will get the following message: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER THE CASTLE'S BASEMENT TO RESCUE THE PRINCESS BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T RE- CAPTURED ALL OF THE SECRET SCROLLS YET. CONTINUE TRYING! It will then dump you back in Step 1. The Green Scrolls aren't too difficult to find, just shoot and run everywhere. There are 5 of them and they are lo- cated in Steps 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9. When you get the 5th and final one at the top right area of Step 9 you will automatically get this message: THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT IS INSCRIBED ON THE SCROLL: FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF CASTLE COURTYARD'S THIRD STONE LANTERN, THROW YOUR KNIVES 3 TIMES AND DIS- APPEAR 3 TIMES, THEN... DID YOU TAKE A MENTAL NOTE OF THIS? You will automatically finish Step 9 and go on to Step 10. This is the stage where you must find the hidden entrance to Step 13. To do this, do what the message said. Locate the 3rd stone lantern going up the left side of the screen. Now defeat the enemies and stand to the right of it and shoot your stars into it 3 times and then disappear 3 times. A staircase should appear where the lantern was and you will finish Step 10 and advance to Step 13, the final stage. Now just bull your way to the end of this stage where you will have the final battle against Gyokuro. Avoid him while blasting him with your throwing stars and victory will be yours! After the points screen it will show a yellow screen with Kazamaru on it and the princess walking out to him. The following words appear above him: YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED YOUR MISSION, RESCUED THE PRINCESS AND RESTORED PEACE TO OHKAMI PROVINCE. Once the slow moving princess reaches you these words appear below them: KAZAMARU AND THE PRINCESS LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. THE END You then get a screen that says GAME OVER with your score before it returns you to Step 1. It was interesting that a game this old made you find a hidden entrance to get the ending. Beware if you are using any cheat codes for this as there is an invulnerability code that makes it so the scrolls you collect do not register as being collected, so you will not be able to finish the game using that particular code. OUTRUN (Sega) -This classic Sega arcade game is a slick little racing game for the Master System. The track layout is a little difficult to explain. There are a total of 15 routes to race, but when you reach the end of one the track forks off in two directions. When you make your choice you simply keep racing on the new route you chose. There is no stoppage of play between routes and the game is one long continuous race until you either reach the end of the game or you run out of time. So even though there are 15 routes, since you choose which fork to take at the end of the route, you will only end up racing on 5 different routes before finishing the game. The surprising thing about this, for an old game, is that you get a different ending for each of the 5 pos- sible routes you will finish on (to get a better idea, check out the route map that each one of the guides on GameFAQs.com has). When you finish the game it will show you the COURSE MAP and the route that you took and you will notice that you can end the game at points A, B, C, D and E. Here are the endings you get for each of those points: --A-- (Vineyard) If you finish at this GOAL (taking the left path every time the route forks) it will show a bunch of guys tossing you high in the air as your blonde girl looks on. Another scantily clad girl walks onto the screen and looks on as the guys end up dropping you and stand there looking at the hot woman. It then goes to the COURSE MAP, showing the path you took to the goal and then goes to the BEST OUTRUNNERS screen where you can enter your initials. After this it goes back to the title screen. --B-- (Death Valley) When you finish at this GOAL points is shows a bunch of natives greeting you as you come to a halt. Smoke comes from the back of your car and as you and your blonde passenger get out of the car the hood and trunk pop open and the tires fall off the car...basically it falls apart. Not sure why you get such a dismal ending for taking this route but that's what you get. It then shows the COURSE MAP and the route you took to finish the game then it goes to the BEST OUTRUNNERS screen where you can enter your initials and then back to the title screen. --C-- (Desolation Hill) When you finish getting your bonus points your car will come to a halt at a GOAL line where 3 camels await you. You and your blonde female passenger get out of the car and an Arab man walks towards you with a lantern, hands it to you and then walks off. As he leaves a puff of smoke appears in front of you and a harem of 6 women appear, surrounding you in victory as the blonde looks on. It then shows the COURSE MAP and the route you took to finish the game, then goes to the BEST OUTRUNNERS screen where you can enter your initials and finally back to the title screen. --D-- (Autobahn) Once your bonus points finish adding up it will show your car coming to a stop at the GOAL line with a bunch of people looking on. You and your gal passenger get out of the car and the girl with the trophy walks right past you and hands the trophy to the blonde as you wring your hands in disbelief. It then shows the route you took on the COURSE MAP and then goes to the BEST OUTRUNNERS screen where you can enter your initials and then returns you to the title screen. --E-- (Lakeside) Once your bonus points tally up it will show your car coming to a stop at the GOAL line with a bunch of people there to greet you. Your blonde gal pal gets out of the car and looks on as you greet the girl bringing you the trophy and get what looks like a kiss from her. It then goes to the COURSE MAP and shows the route you took to get to this ending point. It then goes to the BEST OUT- RUNNERS screen where you can enter your initials. Do this and it will go back to the title screen. It's great that a racing game released in 1987 has 5 endings to see. The game is smooth and definitely has great replay value but could have had more tracks to play through. PAPERBOY (Sega) - PARLOUR GAMES (Sega) - PENGUIN LAND (Sega) - PHANTASY STAR (Sega) - POSEIDON WARS 3-D (Sega) - POWER STRIKE (Sega) - PRO WRESTLING (Sega) - PSYCHO FOX (Sega) - QUARTET (Sega) - R-TYPE (Sega) - R.C. GRAND PRIX (Seismic) -This fun little racer only has 10 tracks to play through. You can get better parts between races if you have enough money, preferrably the Ultra parts. Between Tracks 5 & 6 you will play a special bonus Drag Race track, but only if you are playing with more than 1-player. When you finish Track 10 it will show the screen with your trophy (assuming you won), prize money and time. It then goes to what is probably the most colorful screen in any SMS game, showing your R.C. car on a pedestal with brilliant streaks of color coming out from it. Your name is displayed to the left, your money to the right and the words WORLD CHAMPION below you. It will eventually just go to the title screen from here. Normally I don't like one screen endings, but man this one is cool to look at. RAMBO III (Sega) -A very simple light phaser game along the lines of Operation Wolf. There are only 7 stages to play through. They all scroll from left to right as you go after the bad guys on each level, but when you get to Stage 7 it scrolls for- ward and you have tanks and choppers coming at you. When you get to the end of the stage you will face off against one large chopper. Destroy it and you will go to a screen with a giant explosion and it will say MISSION COMPLETE with your score underneath. John Rambo will then slowly emerge onto the screen from the explosion. The next screen shows a picture of Rambo and says THE TALE OF YOUR HEROIC DEEDS WILL BECOME A LEGEND TO BE PASSED DOWN FROM ONE GENERA- TION TO THE NEXT. It will then return you to the title screen. That's it. Not much to see here. RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (Sega) - RAMPAGE (Activision) - RASTAN (Sega) -This game by Taito is one of the best games on the SMS. It's an action slash- er where you play a character who looks like Conan and must slash your way through enemies while being careful you don't jump into lava filled pits or water holes. There are a total of 7 rounds. Each round has 3 areas, except for Round 7, which has 4 areas. The last area of each round has your boss fight. The coolest boss of the game is actually the Read Dragon (probably should be Red Dragon, but I've seen Read in all documentation for the game) in Round 6-3. He takes up the whole screen. Now in Round 7 you have 3 areas to play through and then a final area, Round 7-4, will be your final boss fight with another, less imposing, dragon. Defeat it and it will go to a screen showing a pic of Rastan kneeling with his sword in the dragon and these words below: AFTER I HAD SAFELY ESCORTED THE PRINCESS TO THE COUNTRY OF CHAMOIS, THE KING WAS VERY PLEASED AND GAVE ME MANY TREASURES. It shows a couple pics of the princess and then says NOT ONLY THAT, BUT HE WANTED ME TO MARRY HER AND SOME DAY SUCCEED KING'S THRONE I LOVED THE PRINCESS (not my grammar). AND I THINK SHE ALSO LOVED ME TOO HOWEVER, SHE'S NOT THE PERSON TO BE THE WIFE OF A THIEF LIKE ME. I SNEAKED AWAY QUIETLY FROM THE COUNTRY OF CHAMOIS. AGAIN, AIMLESS JOURNEY HAD STARTED. AFTER ALL, IT SEEMS I'M A BORN WANDERER. THE HAPPENING THIS TIME WAS AN ORDEAL FOR ME. WHEN I HAD OVERCOME THE ORDEAL, I GOT RID OF THE THIEF'S MIND. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT KIND OF HAPPENING THE FATE WAS FOR ME IN THE FUTURE. It then shows a pic of Rastan walking away from the princess and says HOWEVER I WILL ALWAYS OVERCOME IT, AND SHALL PROMISE THAT I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE NEW ADVENTURE STORY. NOW, THIS ENDS ONE OF THE STORIES OF THE "RASTAN". Despite the awkward story, I'm just glad it had a cool ending. The staff credits will appear and it will end at the PRODUCED BY TAITO screen, where it stays until you reset. REGGIE JACKSON BASEBALL (Sega) - RESCUE MISSION (Sega) - ROCKY (Sega) -There are only 3 opponents you will have to face in the entire game: Apollo, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago. You face each of them in a 15 round fight and must either get a KO, TKO or decision to beat them, as in all boxing matches. However, before each fight you get a chance to enhance your abilities with a training session. You can skip these sessions, but you really need whatever abilities you gain from the training sessions to defeat these 3 guys. After you finish off Drago it will go to the blue screen that shows Rocky with his arms raised with WIN above him and Drago hanging his head in shame. Beneath you it says CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE THE WORLD CHAMPION. It then shows Rocky running into the arms of his wife Adrian in front of what looks like one of the buildings in Washington D.C. and the words THE END appear above them. It will then return to the title screen. Would have been cooler if they would have had a few more opponents in the game, but at least the big 3 were here and not some other fools. SHANGHAI (Sega) -The SMS version of MahJong has no ending, unless you count the screen that shows the dragon blowing out a fireball and then disintegrating as an ending. That happens after you beat a board in Solitaire mode. I beat 10 boards in a row and kept getting the same dragon screen each time. It does not keep track of how many boards you have beaten, so there is no ending to work towards. The other 2 modes are Tournament mode and Challenge mode. In Tournament mode you simply play a timed game of Shanghai and it keeps track of your top 5 scores. There are no pre-set scores to beat, so all you can do here is keep playing and trying to beat your previous scores. In Challenge mode you play against another player and each have a set amount of time to make a move. If you beat your opponent, you simply start another game. I'd like to say there is more to the game than this, but it is an older game and was created just so the player could have fun playing mindless games of Mahjong on their SMS. SHINOBI (Sega) -One of the all-time Sega classics has one of the all time classic bad end- ings. There are a total of 5 rounds. Round 1 has 3 areas but Rounds 2-5 each have 4 areas. The last area of each round is a boss fight. When you reach the Masked Ninja in Round 5-4 you will have to defeat his four different phases. This is a pain, but if you can defeat him all four times it will show the usual pic of the boss with the stamp through his pic and then you are rewarded with a black screen with GAME OVER on it. It could have at least said THE END or something, but they choose to slap you in the face with the same message you get when you die. It goes back to the title screen after this. SHOOTING GALLERY (Sega) -This old school Light Phaser game has 24 rounds. In these rounds you will be shooting at ducks, balls, balloons, spaceships and even tvs. In each round there is a set number of targets that you need to hit to advance to the next round (it varies in each round). If you manage to hit 15 of the targets in Round 24 it will tally up your score like it does at the end of every other round but then it will go to a screen that says VICTORY! YOU HAVE FINISHED ALL 24 ROUNDS. END OF GAME BONUS: 100000. It shows your score at the bottom of the screen as well as the highest possible score that you could have achieved. It will then return to the title screen, where you get to look at the dude with the gun that looks like it was drawn by a 3-year old. A very tired 3-year old. SLAP SHOT (Sega) - SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (Sega) - SNAIL MAZE (Sega) -This is the built-in game that came with the original Sega Master Systems. You could play it by powering up the SMS without a cartridge inserted, then you would hold the UP button while pressing A and B at the same time. Voila, free game! You can play it on various emulators as well if you have the US- European SMS BIOS V1.3 file or in MEKA by just powering up the emulator and doing the same trick you would on the original SMS. Anyway, you must simply guide your snail through 12 basic mazes. However, you have a time limit for each maze and it gets lower as you progress. If you can manage to finish Round 12 the word CONGRATULATIONS! will appear on the screen above the maze and a victory tune will sound. It will then reset back to the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM screen. This game is sometimes referred to as just "MAZE" but "SNAIL MAZE" seems to be the popular name. SPACE HARRIER (Sega) - SPACE HARRIER 3D (Sega) -This sequel to the original on the SMS plays pretty much the same, just with different stages and enemies. There are 13 regular stages, where you must play through a stage and defeat a boss at the end. When you get to Stage 14 you have to battle through all 13 bosses you already beat one more time, one right after another. The cool part about this is that they show the boss' name just before you do battle with it. After dispatching of those 13 bosses again, you will finally get to fight the final boss, Dark Uriah. He's a fuzzy looking serpent, but don't let his looks fool you, he's nasty. Take him out and Space Harrier will start running on the ground until he reaches these 2 samurais guarding a bubble with a mini version of Uriah in it. The samurais and the bubble will explode, allowing the creature to escape. He comes down close to you and you hop on him and ride off into the distance. The following EPILOGUE will appear on the screen: AFTER A LONG AND DANGEROUS BATTLE DEEP IN THE LAND OF THE DRAGONS, YOU...SPACE HARRIER...HAVE DEFEATED THE EVIL PRINCE, EURIA'S HALF-BROTHER, AND SAVED THE TRUE DRAGON PRINCE EURIA FROM THE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE THAT WAS HIS PRISON. IN RESPONSE TO YOUR BRAVERY, THE MAGNIFICENT WHITE DRAGON, NOW KING OF THE DRAGONS, PLEDGED YOU HIS UNDYING GRATITUDE AND FRIEND- SHIP. WITH PEACE RESTORED TO THE LAND OF THE DRAGONS, EURIA AND YOU SOARED OFF INTO THE SKIES, SEARCHING OUT NEW CHALLENGES IN THE LAND OF THE DRAGONS. THUS ENDS THE BATTLE OF SPACE HARRIER 3-D! After this, THE END appears on the screen followed by the staff credits. The credits end on the PRESENTED BY SEGA screen then by pressing 1 you will get to enter your initials on a high score screen. It will then go to the title screen. SPELLCASTER (Sega) -One of the coolest games released for the SMS, it combines action, adventure and RPG into a near perfect game. It is essentially the same story as Kujaku Ou for the Famicom, except that game had none of the action sequences that are found in Spellcaster. You must lead a man named Kane Tensen on a quest that involves fighting 13 boss battles (as well as many mini-boss battles) and takes him to various lands, mountains, underwater, a pyramid and even to the Underworld. You have to talk to many people and find many items and weap- ons that will unlock even more areas of the game to travel to. Your ultimate goal is to prevent the Dark Lord from being released, but of course you know that's not going to happen. When you finally make your way through the Under- world and defeat the Demon you will return to Summit Temple where Daikak, your mentor throughout the game (and enemy at one point) will give you the final sword and have you revive the Serpent God, where you merge with him and be- come a flying dragon. You will now have one last area to play through, which is in reality an overhead shooting stage where you sprout wings and must go through and defeat 4 mini-bosses before you face off with the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord is quite imposing, taking up most of the screen and looking fierce with the sharp teeth and long blue horns coming out of its head. When you fi- nally manage to defeat it you will get this message: THE EVIL LORD AND HIS ARMIES HAVE BEEN DEFEATED. BUT AS LONG AS SUFFERRING (sic) EXISTS, THE THREAT THAT THE DARK LORD WILL RETURN REMAINS. YOU MUST STRIVE TO RELIEVE THAT SUF- FERING. THE ROAD AHEAD OF YOU IS LONG, HARD AND ENDLESS. YOU MUST NOT PAUSE, BUT JOURNEY EVER ONWARD. FOR THAT IS YOUR DESTINY, MASTER OF SPELLS. It then goes to a really cool screen showing Kane standing on a ledge watching the sun rise. Awesome graphics for an 8-bit game. It then goes to a STAFF credits roll with PRESENTED BY SEGA ending things and back to the title screen. SPIDER-MAN (Sega) - SPORTS PAD FOOTBALL (Sega) - SPY VS SPY (Sega) - STRIDER (Sega) - SUMMER GAMES (Sega) - SUPER MONACO GP (Sega) -A basic racing game put out for the SMS in 1990. There are a total of 16 courses that you must race through. You have to rank in the top 10 to keep playing the game and you only get points for finishing in the top 6. The game keeps track of your total points as you go. When you finish Course 16 (Aus- tralia) it will show the RANKING screen for that race as usual and then will show the POINTS RANKING screen for the total points in the game. If you fin- ish in 1st place in points it will go to a cool screen showing you sitting in your race car with your fist raised and CONGRATULATIONS spelled out below you. The next screen shows the top 3 racers standing on the pedestals with a Sega checkerboard pattern in the background. The next screen shows you standing outside of your car with 2 scantily-clad ladies to each side of you and the crowd looking on in the background. A square box above you will say F1 GRAND PRIX WORLD CHAMPION ## POINTS. On the bottom of the screen will scroll by each individual race and if you won that race. The scrolling con- cludes with PRESENTED BY SEGA 1990 and THE END. It returns you to the title screen from here. SUPER TENNIS (Sega) - TEDDY BOY (Sega) - THUNDER BLADE (Sega) -This is a basic and extremely difficult shooter where you control a heli- copter through 4 Stages of non-stop waves of enemies. There are a lot of cheap, unavoidable hits in this one, so if you are looking for a fun game to pass some time, look somewhere else. There are a total of 4 Stages. Each stage is divided into 3 sections: a straight-forward shooting section, a 3D type shooting section and a final area where you must defeat a large plane with many turrets shooting at you. The 3D parts are tricky in the 4th Stage because there are green beams that take up a section of the screen that must be avoided while dodging a ton of enemy fire. When you make it to the 3rd part of Stage 4 instead of a large ship to defeat you will take on the final boss, the enemy base. You must destroy the 4 turrets that are spewing fire at you first. To do this, keep flying your chopper in a circular motion so every time through you cross the turrets and can take a pot shot at them. If you keep going in this circular motion, past the turrets, then sweep back under or over them, then past them again you will eventually nail them all. Once the 4 turrets are destroyed a flame throwing weapon rises out of the base. Use the same circular pattern to defeat this thing so when you pass by it you can take a shot at it while continuing to avoid the flame. You will have to hit it quite a few times but when you do, victory is yours! The base will "explode" and you will fly up off the screen. You get the STAGE END screen showing the number of hits and bonus points you received and then you will get the one screen ending, showing an orange sky with a few clouds and the sun while the words THE END appear in blue. This screen only stays up for a few seconds before it returns to the title screen. TIME SOLDIERS (Sega) -This is an action game similar to Contra for the NES but not as fun. You can play 2 players simultaneous, which aids in the gameplay, but you need friends for that ;) The stage structure is kind of confusing. The goal of the game is to travel through time and rescue the 5 captured warriors. There is no set layout of the stages however. You will be given a message before you start a stage saying in what time period a particular warrior is in. For instance, it might say that the time warp scanner has found that Warrior "Dymos" is waiting for your help in The World Wars stage. That means you have to keep playing through the random stages until you reach The World Wars stage and when you beat the boss of that stage you will find the warrior Dymos. There are a total of 5 Time Periods: The World Wars The Primitive Age The Age of Rome The Age of Wars The Future World The 5 warriors you need to find are: Laplace Sirius Dymos Altair Alpha In each stage you will have to fight a mini-boss or two. When you defeat a mini-boss a warp will open up. If you are in the particular stage where it says a warrior is waiting for you, DO NOT take that warp or you will go to another time period. Just walk past the warp and the stage will continue. If you are not in the right time period you want to be in, take the warp and it will whisk you away to a different time period. Keep playing until you reach the time period where the captured warrior is, then play through that time period until you reach the main boss and destroy him. Defeating him will rescue that warrior. Keep doing this until you have rescued all 5 of the warriors. Once you defeat the boss that was holding the 5th warrior captive, you will automatically go to the final stage, called LAST BATTLE. This, like all the other stages in the game, is short but will culminate in the final boss battle. This boss, named Gylend, looks like the upper half of a giant cyborg who has seen some serious battle. He moves around the screen firing 3 different types of weapons at you. Avoid them and keep firing back at him, hopefully with your special weapon if you have any ammo left, and eventually you should defeat him. The moment you defeat him there is no explosion but rather it goes to a black screen that says CONGRATULATIONS! The words TIME SOLDIERS appear and start off a staff credits roll. When the credits are done the ALPHA logo appears followed by the scoring screen and then finally a GAME OVER screen. When the lousy GAME OVER screen disappears it goes back to the title screen. It was nice to get staff credits, but the evil GAME OVER screen after finishing a fairly difficult game is like a slap in the face. TRANSBOT (Sega) -This is a shooter that tries to capitalize on the Transformers craze at the time. You play as a transforming vehicle that can turn into a robot when you collect a capsule and choose from several transformations. Basically you can choose between 3 ships (they all look the same but have different weapons) and 3 robots (same robot, different weapons). When you collect the capsule the letters A through F will cycle through at the top of the screen and you have to stop on the letter you want, which isn't always so easy. If you are just blasting through this game like I did at first you will just notice the background changing but you do not seem to go anywhere and things just keep on repeating. However, there is a trick to advancing. You will eventually come across these enemies that look like diamonds that will appear one at a time on the screen. The only way to destroy them is by using the letter D ship transformation. Sometimes only one diamond enemy will appear, sometimes several will show up. I think you only have to shoot one of these and if you managed to defeat it/them with your D ship a tunnel will appear when you reach the brown sand area immediately after you pass the metallic floor area. This sounds complicated but if you get to these diamond enemies and do not defeat them, the tunnel to the underground will not appear and you will just keep going infinitely or until you lose all your lives. Once in the under- ground area you will fly through this underground stage and at the end will encounter what looks like an AT-ST (chicken walker) from the Star Wars movies. Destroy this and you will return back above ground. There will be some different enemies when you return above ground but the backgrounds are the same and your goal is the same, to destroy the diamond enemies when they appear with your D ship and get back underground. Unfortunately, you will get the same AT-ST enemy (named Elgramzon) to defeat and you will go back to the surface after defeating it. There is no ending to report here folks. I played through and defeat the DALUAS boss 7 or 8 times using the different transformations and did not trigger an ending, so I assume there is not one. This is one of the few games that appeared in card format rather than on a cartridge and there is a rumor that the game got released on a cartridge as well and had an ending, but there is no proof for this. The game was released in Japan under the name Astro Flash. As an added note, the game's score goes up to at least 99,999,980. The high score of 502,040 was achieved by a guy named Jon Rivera in 2009. I thought the counter might reset at 1,000,000 but when it kept going I thought it would reset at 10,000,000 but it kept going so I gave up. I was using Pro Action Replay codes, of course. VIGILANTE (Sega) - WALTER PAYTON FOOTBALL (Sega) - WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SANDIEGO (Parker Bros.) - WONDER BOY (Sega) -This game is very similar to Hudson's Adventure Island for the NES, except it stars Wonder Boy, one of the earlier Sega mascots. The game is made up of 10 Areas. There are 4 Rounds in each Area. However, the game will end at Area 9, Round 4 unless you collect the doll in each area. Most of these dolls are hidden in plain sight, but some area hidden in rocks (and in flames in Areas 10-3 and 10-4. If you fail to collect all the dolls when you defeat the boss in Area 9-4, it will show you rescuing your girl and you will get the message THANK YOU FOR RISKING YOUR LIFE TO RESCUE ME. OH, TOM-TOM, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! It will then go to a black screen that says THE END and back to the title screen. Now if you managed to collect all the dolls when you beat the Area 9-4 boss, you will simply exit the stage to the right and go on to Area 10-1. Now that you get to play through the last area, make your way through the 4 Rounds and you will reach the final boss. It doesn't matter if you collected any of the dolls in Area 10, as their purpose was to unlock Area 10 and getting these last 4 dolls does not affect the ending. When you defeat the final boss, you will get...the same exact ending you got when you defeated the boss of Area 9-4. Seriously. I guess you can't expect much out of a game released in 1986, but any kind of difference would've been appreciated. WONDER BOY IN MONSTER LAND (Sega) - WONDER BOY III - THE DRAGON'S TRAP (Sega) -Talk about a great game with a great ending. In this 3rd installment in the Wonder Boy series for the SMS you start the game where Wonder Boy II left off but when you defeat the Dragon you get cursed and transformed into a Lizard. This begins your quest, where you will be able to turn into several different animals: Lizard-Man, Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man, Lion-Man and Hawk-Man. Each one has their own special abilities and a few, like Mouse-Man and Hawk-Man, can get to areas previously unreachable by others. Your goal in the game is to go through the land with your different character's abilities and defeat the 6 dragons. Mecha Dragon gets taken out right at the beginning, but you must also dispose of Mummy Dragon, Dragon Zombie, Captain Dragon, Daimyo Dragon and finally, the Vampire Dragon. Vampire Dragon will be found in the final castle that you can only reach using Hawk-Man. You will have to use each character's abilities in the castle (using special rooms you find along the way that will transform your character) with the exception of Lizard-Man, who is a big slug anyway. Once you finally reach the Vampire Dragon and defeat it a Cross will fall from the ceiling. Grab it when it lands and the screen will flash and all the animals that you played as will float out of your body as the ending music starts to play. Now as the regular WOnder Boy character (Hu-Man) you will appear on the usual platform that the doors always lead you to in the main town and it will be night time. You will automatically jump around and then head to the left where you will enter the door in the last house. The door disappears after you enter it and the following text appears above the house: THE LONG BATTLE-FILLED JOURNEY HAS FINALLY ENDED. THE TALES OF YOUR GALLANT AND HEROIC ACTION WILL BE PASSED DOWN FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER THROUGHOUT ETERNITY. GOOD NIGHT, BRAVE WARRIOR. GOOD NIGHT, MONSTER-LAND.... A shooting star flies across the screen then it will show the main characters from the game with backgrounds that you traveled to throughout the game: HU-MAN: Castle background LIZARD-MAN: Pyramid background MOUSE-MAN: Jungle background PIRANHA-MAN: Pirate ship background LION-MAN: Dojo background HAWK-MAN: Final Castle background After this it goes to a starry black screen and lists the enemy cast: CAST CYCLOPS WILL O'WISP FALLING BLOCK GIANT BAT SKELTON (sic) MASTER SKELTON (sic) SKULL MASTER SKULL WONDERING BORN AIR GIANT SIDE-CRAWLER GIANT TOAD SHADOW-MAN FAERIE ZOMBIE FUZZBALL DEADLY NINJA DEADLY SAMURAI FIRE OCTPUS (sic) HOVERING SMOG ROPER GIANT FISH GOBLIN GIANT COBRA FIRE ANT-LION SPARK FIRE STONE FIRE FLOWER MECHA DRAGON MUMMY DRAGON DRAGON ZOMBIE CAPTAIN DRAGON DAIMYO DRAGON VAMPIER DRAGON (sic) It will then show the music tracks from the game, which is pretty cool of them to include this in the ending. then it says PRESENTED BY SEGA and THANK YOU and finally THE END. It stays here until you reset. WORLD GRAND PRIX (Sega) - YS: THE VANISHED OMENS (Sega) - ZAXXON 3-D (Sega) -There are a total of 9 unique rounds. Each round has 3 distinct areas: a deep space area, inside the enemy base and the boss battle outside the base. When you reach the boss battle of Round 9 you will have to take on 3 separate boss- es. They are tough to hit because you need to destroy the heat-seeking missile they fire at you and then line yourself up perfectly to hit them in the weak spot. If you manage to beat all 3 of them (the last one is especially tough) the words MISSION COMPLETE will scroll onto the screen. It will then go on to Round 10, which is just Round 1 again, so consider finishing the original 9 Rounds as beating the game. ZILLION (Sega) -This game is just one big maze of rooms that you must find your way through. Along the way you must locate the 5 Floppy Disks and 1 Red ID card, which you will use on the main computer at the end. There are also a couple other char- acters you can find in the base (Apple and Champ) who you can play as if you want, but I played as JJ the whole time. I recommend using the FAQ by Nebu to guide you through this game, as it is as accurate and precise a guide for Zillion as you will find. Towards the end of the game, once you enter the self-destruct code on the main computer you will have to fight the only boss you will find in the game, some big creature you must shoot about 20 times. Defeat him and get the hell out of the base (you can go back to the computer and enter the suicide code -0000- to add a little bit of escape time if you feel you need it). Once you make it back to your mother ship, no small feat, Emi (girl on the ship) says OH! GREAT!!! and a message will appear that says THE "ZILLION" MEN WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE FROM A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND ACCOMPLISH THEIR MISSION. It then shows what is probably the main boss you never had to fight and his comment is ....... It then shows the character's pictures and vital stats: EMI HEIGHT 155 CM BLOOD TYPE AB BIRTHDAY 16.MAY 2371 CHAMP HEIGHT 178 CM WEIGHT 68 KG BLOOD TYPE B BIRTHDAY 8.AUGUST.2369 APPLE HEIGHT 165 CM BLOOD TYPE A BIRTHDAY 13.APRIL 2370 JJ HEIGHT 168 CM WEIGHT 53 KG BLOOD TYPE O BIRTHDAY 18.MARCH 2371 OPA OPA HEIGHT 38 CM WIDTH 40 CM EACH WING 19 CM LENGTH 52 CM WEIGHT 16.8 KG I love how they do not list the female's weight. A staff role then commences against a blue background and ends at the TOP Dream TD logo before going back to the title screen. A cool ending for a game released in 1987. There is also a slightly different ending message you will get if someone in your party dies. It will say ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE "ZILLION" MEN WERE LOST, THEIR MISSION WAS SUCCESSFUL, rather than the line of text mentioned above. ZILLION II - THE TRI FORMATION (Sega) -This game is pure action, with none of the maze wandering that took place in the original Zillion. In fact, every other round in the game is a side- scrolling shooter while the other rounds are platformer levels. There are a total of 8 rounds. In Rounds 1, 3, 5 and 7 you are on your motorcycle (or armorator, once you find the A icon). In Rounds 2, 4, 6 and 8 you control JJ (or Apple or Champ, once rescued). At the end of these even rounds you fight a boss. When you get to the end of Round 8 you will do battle with the evil Baron Ricks. Defeat him and he explodes. It will go to a split screen with a message at the top and various images at the bottom, like you flying around in your armorator or pictures of your two companions. The message reads AT LAST, AFTER A FIERCE BATTLE, J.J. AND HIS COMRADES MANAGE TO DESTROY THE SEC- RET FORTRESS OF THE NOZA FORCES. IN SPITE OF THEIR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL MISSION, THE ENEMY'S INVASION HAS ONLY BEEN TEMPORARILY STOPPED. UNLESS THE NOZA FORCES GIVE UP THEIR PLAN TO CONQUER THE MALIS PLANET, J.J. AND HIS FRIENDS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REST FOR EVEN A MOMENT. J.J. AND HIS COMRADES-IN-ARMS' VALIANT WAR AGAINST THE EVIL EMPIRE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL PEACE ONCE AGAIN REIGNS. It then goes to a screen that looks like the title screen but has THE END as a mes- sage. Now it returns to the title screen. ===================== B. SMS GAMES (EUROPE) ===================== ALIEN STORM (Sega) -This is a really cool blast'em up where you go through 4 Missions shooting any alien that gets near you. There are side scrolling stages and there are 3D stages, but your goal is to just keep destroying aliens until you make it to the big Brain at the end. Mission I has 2 stages, Missions II & III have 4 stages and Mission IV has 6 stages. However, at the end of Mission IV, Stage 3 you will have to pick between two doors that each lead to a boss. One boss will be Stage 4, the other Stage 5. If you pick the Stage 4 boss and beat him you will skip Stage 5 and move on to Mission IV, Stage 6, so there are really only 5 stages in Mission IV. Anyway, I played through the game on NORMAL LEVEL difficulty. If you choose the left door at the end of Mission IV and defeat the boss you must face the Brain in Stage 6. You can't kill the Brain, but if you keep defeating aliens you will eventually get to the final big yellow al- ien that appears. Defeat him and the Brain will explode. It goes to a black screen with a pick of the 2 playable characters in the game and shows some staff credits beneath it. After saying PRESENTED BY SEGA it goes back to the title screen. Now if you chose the right door at the end of Mission IV, Stage 3 it will bring you to Stage 5 where you fight a boss. Defeat it and move on to Stage 6 and the same Brain boss you fought if you chose the left door. I also noticed when fighting this stage that you only need to outlast it and do not have to kill the last yellow alien. The Brain will explode no matter what. Unfortunately you get the same exact ending regardless of which door you go through and which boss you defeat at the end. Also of note, it doesn't matter which character you beat the game with or which difficulty you played the game on (NORMAL LEVEL or HARD LEVEL). You get that one screen ending with the staff credits in every situation. Kind of weak considering all the options presented to you. This game was only released in Europe and Brazil and did not appear on the SMS in the USA, though it did come out for the Sega Genesis. CHEESE CAT-ASTROPHE STARRING SPEEDY GONZALES (Sega) -Another European/Brazil only release, this action platformer is comprised of 4 stages. Each stage has 3 levels plus 1 boss level. The object on each level is to find the key which lets you rescue one of your friends. Find the key then run for the exit sign. When you beat the boss of Stage 4, Level 4 (the boss is always Sylvester the Cat) you will have one final battle with Sylves- ter where he is lowering a crane onto you from above. You have to jump on the cheese blocks floating in the liquid cheese and grab the stick of dynamite, then time it perfectly to throw it back up so it explodes at him. Do this 6 times and you will get the weak ending, which just shows Speedy sitting with his girlfriend in front of a night sky with fireworks going off. After this the staff credits will roll and you will get to enter your name on a high scorers list. Pretty basic ending. You can choose from Easy, Medium or Hard difficulties, but you will get the same ending beating the game on Easy that you will beating the game on Hard. DRAGON - THE BRUCE LEE STORY (Virgin) -This is your average platform action game but if you're a Bruce Lee fan, this game probably means a bit more to you, as he died a couple decades before this game was released and its a credit to how amazing he was that he still has had video games made about him at all. There are 4 Stages (called Sections) in the game. Each stage has 3 levels to play through. At the end of Section 4-3 you will face off against The Phantom. He keeps appearing and disappearing and it takes quite a few hits to do him in, but once he is gone, exit off the screen to the right and it will tally your final score. It will then show a nice pic of Bruce Lee in front of a beautiful sunset and the words below say THE KEY TO IMMORTALITY IS TO FIRST LIVE A LIFE WORTH REMEMBERING. He certain- ly was worth remembering. The credits then flash by and you will eventually get to enter your name on the high scorers list (assuming you got one). Also of note is that there are 3 skill levels to pick from: Easy, Medium and Hard. You get the same ending regardless of what skill level you choose. I was hop- ing to get a special message after beating the Hard skill level like in the Taxan games on the NES, but no such luck here. ECCO THE DOLPHIN (Sega) -This game was a classic on the Sega Genesis but only saw a SMS release in Europe, Brazil and Australia, though it did show up on the handheld Game Gear. It's a pleasant game where you control a dolphin and must travel through 17 different stages to find the cause of the storm that sucked all the living creatures out of his home bay. Along the way you must solve puzzles and do away with other marine life, like crabs, sharks and even a giant seahorse. You will eventually travel back in time to find a piece of the Asterite, which helps you figure out what is going on, and the game will conclude with 2 stages that auto-scroll (The Tube & The Machine) and a final stage called The Vortex, where you will fight the Vortex Queen herself, which looks like a giant alien head from the movie Alien. To defeat her, use your sonar to knock out the eyes, then ram into the jaw several times. The jaw will regenerate, so knock it out a few more times and you will defeat her. It will then show Ecco swimming out of the tube and then back into home bay, where he jumps around with the other dolphins. He uses sonar on one of them to talk to him and it says: YOU HAVE SAVED US YOU ARE GREAT WE WILL SING OF YOU FOREVER YOUR SONG WILL ECHO THROUGHOUT THE VAST OCEAN THANK YOU ECCO! Ecco swims around with his friends a bit more then sonars another one: DO YOU THINK THE VORTEX ARE DESTROYED? The CREDITS then scroll by (there are quite a few of them) and it finally says THANKS FOR PLAYING ECCO That last message was accompanied by digitized dolphin speak. It stays on this screen for quite awhile and eventually returns to the title screen. FLASH, THE (Sega) -This game was only released in Europe for the SMS and was one of the last SMS carts released. The game requires a lot of precision jumping and the Flash character is so fast that this can be a royal pain. You must play through 6 Episodes (levels). Each episode has 2 zones. When you finish the 2nd zone of each episode you will face off against the Trickster's car. You must blow up the 5 exhaust pipes and then the Trickster driving it. Each episode it gets harder to beat this car. When you face off against it after the last episode (Episode 6-2) and you knock out all the pipes and the head, you must now go for the small guy inside the car. Knock him out and you get the ending. It shows a screen with the Flash posing for a camera shot holding a sign with the Mayor crossed out. As the camera man takes the picture the Flash quickly disappears out of the frame, apparently heading for the hills as the poster he was holding drops to the ground. It then goes right to the staff credits screen. You then get to enter your name on a high scorers screen and then it brings you back to the title screen. The ending definitely isn't worth the trouble you put into trying to beat this hard game. GAUNTLET (US GOLD) -I take no joy in making this entry here. The game simply has no ending and goes on infinitely. I've heard some sources say the game has 100 levels, some say it has 512. Neither is true. The game just has some kind of evil level generator that keeps the game going forever. Eventually the levels start repeating randomly, which is exactly the same thing that happens in the NES version of Gauntlet II (which is probably the same game as this, they just call it Gauntlet II because there was an earlier -and better- version of Gauntlet that had been released for the NES earlier). Officially stated for this guide, the game has no ending, but if you need a goal, the original Gauntlet had 100 levels, so set your goal for Level 100 and consider it beaten. [EDIT] Thanks to codes made by Nolberto82 and Hybrid (which you can find on thegshi.org), as well as Kega Fusion's Fast Forward feature, I was able to manually blast through each level manually (the code to make exit tiles appear wherever you walk helped tremendously) and found that the level counter goes all the way to Level 9999 then goes to Level *000 with the * being some kind of weird symbol. Again, the levels repeated like crazy so there really is no end to this game. Perhaps at some point the Level # re- turns to Level 1, but Level 9999 is as far as I'm going to ever delve into this one. HANG-ON (Sega) This classic Sega arcade game is comprised of a total of 8 Courses. As a side note, this game was only released by it- self in Europe and Brazil. In the USA it was released on two different multi- carts: one with Astro Warrior and one with Safari Hunt. It was also released in Germany and Australia, but only in Sega Card version. JURASSIC PARK (Sega) -This is a pretty cool action game released on the SMS in Europe and Brazil only. You get to choose from 4 Rounds in any order you prefer. They are label- ed by the boss you will be fighting in them: BRACHIOSAURUS, TRICERATOPS, VELO- CIRAPTOR & PTERANODON. Each round has a Car stage, where you control the cross hair surrounding your car and must blast dinos that try to attack it (kind of like an Operation Wolf style game). Once you shoot away the boss of the Car stage you go to an Action stage where you are Dr. Grant and must work your way through a level and beat up the Round's dinosaur boss at the end. When you finish all 4 Rounds you will get to play the TYRANNOSAURUS Round. Get through the Car stage and then when you make it through the Action stage you will face the T-Rex himself. You must use your grenade launcher on the ceiling to make tiles fall on him. Eventually you will knock him out once you deplete his en- ergy. It will go to a picture of some people in a museum looking at dinosaur fossils and the message crawl below says: GRANT'S HEROIC EFFORTS LEAD TO THE RESTABILIZATION OF THE COMPUTER CONTROLLED SECURITY SYSTEM. The next ending pic shows newspaper ads and posters and a newscast promoting the opening of the park and the crawl says: AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS THE OPENING OF JURASSIC PARK WAS IN HEADLINES ALL AROUND THE WORLD. It then shows some tour vehicles at the park looking at dinosaurs and says: THE HEADLINES READ, "SEE REAL DINOSAURS!" THIS EXCITED NOT ONLY CHILDREN, BUT ADULTS AS WELL. The screen goes black with the Jurassic Park logo appearing and the words: "JURASSIC PARK" A PICTURE OF THE EARTH AS IT WAS, MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO. EVERY ONE DREAMS OF VISITING JURASSIC PARK, A SANCTUARY FOR DINOSAURS. The STAFF credits then flash by and end on a screen with THE END and the HI- SCORE and your SCORE. It will then go back to the title screen. The FAQ on gamefaqs.com mentions that you get the good ending by collecting all the JP logos that appear in the game. I finished the game collecting all of them and finished it purposely missing one and I got the same ending for both. LINE OF FIRE (Sega) -This is a decent vertical scrolling shooter released on the Master System in Europe and Brazil only. There are a total of 6 stages. You start the game in your jeep and the gameplay is very similar to the NES game Jackal, except you have less game area to drive around in and there are no hostages to res- cue. In other stages you will also get to control a raft and a helicopter. At the end of each stage is a boss to defeat. When you get to the end of Stage 6 you will reach the enemy fortress. Destroy the 6 gun turrets and the screen will scroll up a bit more, revealing 5 more targets to destroy. Knock these all out and you win the game. It goes to the usual Stage Clear screen then it will show your chopper with MISSION COMPLETE below it. The next screen shows the chopper landing, being greeted by your comrades rushing out to you and says JACK MADE IT BACK SAFELY TO THE ALLIED BASE. You are then greeted by the General who says YOUR COURAGE AND SKILL HAVE GIVEN THE ALLIED FORCES A GREAT VICTORY. Lastly it shows you walking off with your jacket over your shoulder with the words THANKS TO YOU, OPERATION "LINE OF FIRE" HAS BEEN A COMPLETE SUCCESS. The credits then roll and end with PRESENTED BY SEGA. Pressing a button brings you back to the title screen. Also of note, there are 3 difficulty levels to choose from: EASY, NORMAL & HARD. You get the same exact ending for all 3 difficulties, unfortunately. MARBLE MADNESS (Virgin) -This is pretty much the same game that got released for the NES, with only some minor changes. It has the same 6 races to play through: PRACTICE, BEGIN- NER, INTERMEDIATE, AERIAL, SILLY AND ULTIMATE RACE. There are also 8 diffi- culty settings to set the game at (0-7). The difficulty setting determines how much time you will be allowed to finish a race and will also affect the ending message on the CONGRATULATIONS screen. When you finish all 6 races on difficulty settings 0 through 6 you will get a screen with blue balls bounc- ing all around that says CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ULTIMATE RACE! It will give you a BONUS FOR FINISHING and bonus points for SECONDS LEFT and LIVES LEFT. It will also show your FINAL SCORE. Now if you finished all 6 races on difficulty 7 (the hardest difficulty) you will get this same screen, however you will get an added message at the bottom that says: WOW! YOU FINISHED THE GAME ON THE HARDEST LEVEL! A.W.E.S.O.M.E.! There will also be red balls bouncing around the screen instead of blue balls, which makes sense seeing how you "completed" the job. When you press a button it brings you to the MARBLE MADNESS HIGH ROLLERS screen where you can enter your initials, assuming you got a high score, then it goes back to the title screen. Pretty neat that you got a special message for beating the hardest difficulty. MASTERS OF COMBAT (Sega) -This is a pretty brief fighting game, but even though there aren't a lot of matches, there is some variety in terms of beating the game. There are 3 dif- ficulty levels to choose from: EASY, NORMAL and HARD. There is also an EXTRA difficulty level that you can access. If you get a high score after beating the game, enter your initials as KEY and you will now be able to see the fol- lowing show up on the difficulty level selection: EXTRA NO WAIT FOR NTSC ENEMY ZERO LIFE To make this complete as possible, I will give you the endings for all 3 of the difficulty settings plus all 3 of these bonus setting. EASY DIFFICULTY You only have 4 stages in EASY, plus a Bonus Stage after Stage 2 where you get to damage a car in a certain amount of time. In each stage you must defeat the 4 playable characters in the game (a clone of yourself included). When you beat the opponent of Stage 4 it will show you as the winner as you say WHAT!? THIS TOWN IS BEING CONTROLLED BY A BARBARIAN? A big blonde dude appears on the screen and says CONGRATULATIONS. YOU COMPLETED THE EASY LEVEL GAME. It shows your score beneath. You can now input a 3-digit name. Enter KEY to get those difficulty options to appear. It will say GAME OVER then show your score on the rankings list, then go back to the title screen. NORMAL DIFFICULTY This plays out exactly like in EASY, except when you finish Stage 4 the blonde guy (who we find out is the Mayor) says JUST BEFORE THE DAY OF THE MATCH, THE MAYOR ANNOUNCED THAT HE TOO WOULD BE A PARTICIPANT. The mayor then changes into an alien and it says HOWEVER, WHAT SURPRISED THE FIGHTERS AND CITIZENS MORE THAN ANYTHING WAS THE APPEARANCE OF A CREATURE, UNLIKE ANYTHING ANYONE HAD EVER SEEN. He says "MY ONLY DESIRE IS TO INHABIT A STRONG HUMAN. YOU ARE JUST WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR." You now have a Stage 5 match against the Alien. He's tough, but beat him and it will say MISSION COMPLETE and show your score. You can input your name again. This time instead of saying GAME OVER it will show your character looking out over the city and it says AT LAST EVIL WAS DESTROYED AND THE CITY RETURNED TO ITS FORMER HARMONY. The screen fades to black and the staff credits will flash by, giving a special thanks to you (whatever 3 digit name you put in) and it ends on a MASTERS OF COMBAT PRE- SENTED BY SEGA ENTERPRISES screen. It goes to the high scorers screen and then back to the title screen. HARD DIFFICULTY The same exact stuff that happens in NORMAL happens in HARD. I did notice that the "Barbarian" comment I made in the EASY paragraph above is simply dependant on which character you are playing with, as I was playing as the ninja for the EASY and NORMAL difficulties, but switched to the giant for HARD. After beat- ing the Alien you get a comment from your fighter and your score, then get to put your initials in. Input KEY if you want to try the other difficulty set- tings. You get the same ending message with your character looking out over the city, then the credits, then the title screen. EXTRA DIFFICULTY Here's where it gets cool, as you get to select the Alien as a playable char- acter if you choose. However, the amount of stages and the ending are exact- ly the same as the HARD difficulty. I even beat the game playing as the Alien and it still shows him looking out over the city after beating the final boss Alien. NO WAIT FOR NTSC Same exact stages and ending as NORMAL, HARD and EXTRA. ENEMY ZERO LIFE Same exact stages and ending as NORMAL, HARD, EXTRA and NO WAIT FOR NTSC. So ultimately, even though you technically see all that you will see after beating the NORMAL difficulty, I would call beating EXTRA difficulty offic- ially beating the game. MERCS (Capcom/Sega) -Another decent action game not released in the USA, this Ikari Warriors type game got released in Europe and Brazil only. There are 7 Missions in all and they are pretty short, making this one of the quickest games to finish if you are any good at it. When you get to Mission 7 you will just have to shoot at the engines on the plane before it takes off (around the 40 second mark). If it takes off you have a chance to keep shooting it, but let it go and you do get another chance at this. When you destroy the engines your guy runs into the plane and runs back out with the former president. It goes to the usual screen you get between missions and this one says THE FORMER PRESIDENT IS RESCUED. MISSION SUCCESSFUL. It then goes to a decent scene showing you in your jeep in front of a cool looking bronze/red mountain background during sunset. THE END crawls horizontally across the screen to the middle and then it goes to the screen where you enter your initials if you got a high score. Enter your initials and it goes back to the title screen. You can play the HARD difficulty of the game by holding Down and pressing the 1 Button at the title screen. It will start you with about half the energy you usually start with but the rest of the game is exactly the same. The ending is no different than the one you got playing the game on regular difficulty. MS. PAC-MAN (Tengen) -Another game that was not released for the SMS in the USA, but only in Europe and Brazil. This game has 4 difficulty levels: EASY, NORMAL, HARD & CRAZY! It also has 4 different maze selections to choose from: ARCADE, MINI, BIG & STRANGE. Unfortunately, you get the EXACT same ending no matter what you pick. There are a total of 32 levels here. You get Intermission Acts after Levels 2, 5, 9 and 32. When you finish Level 32 it says ACT 4 THE END. It then shows Mr and Ms Pac-Man meeting each other in the middle of the screen and then an arm comes out of each one of them and they wave to you. Then they turn around and move off into the distance. A bunch of little Pac-Men then swarm the screen and you get the following message: MS. PAC-MAN. WOW! YOU COMPLETED MS PACMAN. GEE YA ONE SWELL PLAYER! FIRE 1 TO HAVE ANOTHER GAME ON ME! FIRE 2 TO CALL IT A DAY! PHEWW! If you press 1 you start back at Level 1 but now it shows 7 stars at the top of the screen under your score. You can play through the game again but you get the same ending that you got the first time through. With all the options you are presented with on the select screen I thought there would at least be 2 different ending messages, but not so much. PIT-FIGHTER (Domark) -This version for the SMS was released in Europe and Brazil only and is a pretty good 8-bit version of the game. The object of the game is to fight 10 matches before you get to face The Warrior. After every 2nd match you have a Grudge Match, where you must knock your opponent down 3 times to win. This is not a numbered match but you must fight them after every 2 matches, making it a grand total of 15 matches you must fight (10 regular, 4 grudge and 1 Champ- ionship Match against The Warrior). After Match 10 you fight that Championship Match against The Warrior. He's tough but if you manage to beat him it will show a cool drawn screen of The Warrior laid out on the ground with money on the ground near him. The words THE WARRIOR FALLS TO THE FLOOR THE CONTEST IS WON... are in the upper right corner with the artist's initials MAT92 in the bottom right corner. The next screen says PRESENTING THE PIT-FIGHTER TEAM and shows what looks like a data printout of the 3 main creators of the game with the heading DOMARK MENTAL HOSPITAL. PATIENT MEDICAL RECORD. CONFIDENTIAL. The 3 guys listed are: NAME: ANDY TAYLOR AGE: 24 YEARS GUILTY OF: PROGRAMMING WITH INTENT TO MAIME COMMENTS: THE PATIENT DRIBBLES A LOT AND HAS A FIXATION WITH CABBAGES. VERY VIOLENT WHEN PITFIGHTER IS SAID TO HIM. NAME: MATT HICKS AGE: 20 YEARS GUILTY OF: CRAZY GRAPHIC DESIGN NON COMPOS MENTIS. COMMENTS: PATIENT SUFFERS FROM DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR USING MOST OF HIS TIME TO CAST MYSTICAL SPELLS ON COLLEAGUES. NAME: GUILLAUME CAMUS AGE: 22 YEARS GUILTY OF: SUPPORT ARTIST AND VICIOUS DOODLING. COMMENTS: PATIENT IS UNDER THE DELUSION HE IS A FROG. OFTEN CATCHES FLIES IN HIS MOUTH AND TRIES TO LAY FROG SPAWN. After this you get a great big GAME OVER screen and if you scored enough points you get A NEW HIGH-SCORE! screen where you enter your name. It then shows the high scores and goes back to the title screen. If you are worried about getting a different ending depending on the difficulty level or Starting level you selected, don't worry, as you get the same exact ending on Easy, Medium or Hard or if you started on Level 0, 1 or 2. PREDATOR 2 (Arena) -A pretty cool, albeit repetitive, action game, released in Europe and Brazil only. There are a total of 7 levels to play through. In each level you must rescue hostages and defeat a boss at the end. Level 7 (the Alien ship) is different from all the other levels in that the background is certainly dif- ferent and the only enemy you face are predators. At the end of the level you will face off against a larger Predator boss. Defeat it and you will go to a screen showing you holding a pistol with the date 1715 on it. The following text scrolls by on the bottom of the screen: HARRIGAN SHIELDS HIS EYES FROM THE SWIRLING WASH OF THE ROTOR AS THE POLICE HELICOPTER LANDS. GARBER EMERGES FROM THE JET RANGER AND LOOKS TO THE SKY. FOLLOWING THE ALIEN SHIPS DIMINISH- ING VAPOR TRAIL, HE SAYS, "WE CAME CLOSE." HARRIGAN LOOKS DOWN AT THE ANCIENT MATCHLOCK PISTOL, STILL CLUTCHED IN HIS HANDS. WEARILY HE SAYS, "DON'T WORRY, YOU'LL GET ANOTHER CHANCE." THE END. The members of the Acclaim development team scroll by and then the message repeats itself. When you press a button it goes to the HIGH SCORE screen where you can enter your name. It then shows the HIGH SCORES and goes back to the title screen when you hit a button. PUTT & PUTTER (Sega) -Putt & Putter is a mini-golf game that was released in Europe only, but it was repackaged as the aptly titled "Minigolf" for release in Brazil. There is a Practice Round you can play, but when you choose the 1P selection you will have to go through 3 Stages, each with 6 holes. After each stage you will get to play a Bonus Round where you can gain more balls. When you finish Stage 3, Hole No. 6 it will show your score card like it normall does then will go to a screen showing your little mini-golf character walking across a grassy land- scape with the PUTT AND PUTTER STAFF credits showing underneath. He walks for awhile, stumbling in the process, until he reaches the cup and jumps into it. PRESENTED BY SEGA appears underneath and it goes back to the title screen. A fun game, though it definitely could have used more stages. ROAD RASH (U.S. Gold) -The classic Sega Genesis game was only released on the SMS in Europe. It is still fun but slightly watered down from its 16-bit counterpart. The object of the game is to finish all 5 races in 4th place or better on each of the game's 5 Levels. When you do this on Level 1 you go to Level 2 and do it again. The races are longer on each Level and by the time you reach Level 5 the 5 races are over 15 miles long each with more cars and police officers to avoid. If you can manage to finish all 5 races in Level 5 in 4th place or above it will go to the usual screen you get when you complete a Level, which shows you and the girl crusing onto the screen and removing your helmets. It then goes to the usual RACE RESULTS screen and then to the usual bike purchase screen. Exit this screen and you will get a message from one of the competi- tors from the race. You then go back to Level 5. So yeah, what I am telling you is there is no real ending to this game. The game is difficult to finish so it would have been nice to see something here. Anyway, here are the messa- ges you get from the race competitors when finishing Level 5 to ease your sadness at the crappy non-ending: NATASHA: CONGRATULATIONS. YOU'RE NOW ONE OF THE RASHER VETS. HOW LONG CAN YOU STAY ON TOP? HELLDOG: YOU'VE WON THIS BATTLE BUT MY WAR ISN'T OVER. YOU'LL SEE ME AGAIN. If anyone knows of any more messages or if there is a way to trigger an end- ing, please let me know. I went ahead and finished all 5 races in Level 5 for a second time and got the same exact message from Natasha and it restarted Level 5 again, so I am 99% sure there is no definitive ending to this one. It did seem like there were more cars on the track the 2nd time through Level 5 but that could be my imagination. RUNNING BATTLE (Sega) -This plays like a dumbed down Streets of Rage, but it isn't a bad little beat em up action title. It was released in Europe only so most of us in the USA have probably never had the chance to play it. There are a total of 6 levels. Level 1 is quick and does not have a boss. Levels 2 through 4 are a little longer and have a boss to face at the end of them. When you get to Level 5 you will go through a door and come upon a blonde woman being held captive (if you used the Level select code however, she will not be here...I will talk about that in a bit). She tells you her name is Mary and you tell her that M (the final boss) killed your partner Brody. She tells you that Brody was her brother so now you vow to avenge his death for her as well. You go right to the Level 5 boss battle with Milacle Man (nice Engrish!) rather than having to play through a level. Defeat him and it is on to Level 6. All you get here is an immediate battle against the final boss, M. He is in some kind of mechanic contraption that you must hit in the eye to do dam- age. You can stand on the mounted machine gun and kick away at the eye but you will have to avoid the other shots it takes at you while up there. Hit it enough times and it will look junked and sink off the screen. It now goes to a blue screen showing you and Mary and it says: NOW BRODY CAN REST IN PEACE. That is all. It simply returns you to the title screen. Not cool. Now if you used the Level Select code to select your level, Mary will not appear in Level 5 as I mentioned above. Also, if using the level select, when you fin- ish off M you will get a different ending message: JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED. BUT WHO WAS THE OTHER ONE? Both endings are crap but at least beating the game properly gets you a dif- ferent ending message than using the level select. SAGAIA (Taito) -An underwater shooter in the Darius series, this game was released on the SMS in Europe and Brazil, but not in the USA. There are a total of 12 Zones, labled with the letters A through L. You only have to play through 7 of the Zones to finish the game, as they fork and you have the option of choosing which fork you want to take. Here is what the Zone layout looks like from the nice FAQ written by EntropicLobo: J / B E H / \ / \ / \ A D G K \ / \ / \ / C F I \ L You will get a different ending depending on whether you finish the game by beating Zone J, K or L. If you take the path that leads you to Zone J and you can defeat the final boss called Bio Strong, defeat the cell that has an em- bryo inside of it and you will get that ending. ZONE J ENDING YOu race off after defeating the boss and it says FINAL ZONE IS OVER. It goes to a pic of Proco Jr and Tiat Young meeting with a gray haired man and it says AFTER COMPLETION OF DIFFICULT MISSION. PROCO JR. AND TIAT YOUNG WERE ...PRAISED BY ALL DESCENDENTS OF DARIUS. THE PRESIDENT OF ORGA DECORATES... PROCO JR. AND TIAT YOUNG WITH MEDALS IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR EXCELLENT SERVICE IN THE WAR. THE CREDITS then roll and after the TAITO copyright screen you can enter your initials in the BEST PLAYERS roll. It then goes back to the title screen. ZONE K ENDING If you chose to end at Zone K you will get to the final boss of that zone, a big Mother Hawk. Defeat it and you will get the FINAL ZONE IS OVER message and it will then go to a screen showing both of the ships flying out of the fortress as it explodes. The message at the bottom of the screen says LATER. PROCO JR. AND TIAT YOUNG DESTROYED THE ENEMYS FORTRESS. SUCCESSFULLY. THEY MADE THEIR ESCAPE AFTER THAT. THE LASTING PEACE WAS RESTORED FOR THE PEOPLE OF DARIUS. The ships dart off through the bottom of the screen and THE CREDITS roll. You enter your initials in the BEST PLAYERS roll and it goes back to the title screen. ZONE L ENDING Defeat the big Steel Spine boss at the end of Zone L and you will get the FINAL ZONE IS OVER message like in Zone J & K and then you will get a screen showing several of the planets and the message at the bottom says AFTER THE BATTLE. PROCO JR. AND TAIT YOUNG HAVE...RETURNED TO THE PLANET OF ORGA. AN- OTHER BATTLE IS AWAITING THEM. ALLIED ENEMY FORCES HAVE DECLARED WAR AGAINST THE RACE OF DARIUS. A big blue bug thing pops up in front of the planets, but then THE CREDITS start to roll. That must have been teasing a sequel. After the credits roll you get to enter your initials as usual and it goes back to the title screen. Pretty cool that a game like this has 3 endings. Also, it doesn't affect the ending if you played the game on Easy, Normal or Hard dif- ficulty. SCRAMBLE SPIRITS (Sega) -This is a pretty straight-forward shooter that wasn't released in the USA. Europe, Brazil and, oddly enough, Canada saw the release of this, but not on the SMS in the USA. There are a total of 6 levels. Levels 1, 3 and 5 have a raid sequence, where your plane gets larger and you have to shoot all the targets in a small period of time to get 100% and a 200,000 point bonus, but none of this affects the ending. When you defeat both parts of the flying machine at the end of Level 6 you will return to base like you do at the end of every other level and it will tally up your score as usual. It will then show a pic of you and player 2 riding down the street in a car with a police escort as onlookers wave at you parade-style. Beneath it will say THE ENEMY FORCES HAVE BEEN CRUSHED..... THE WORLD HAS RETURNED TO UNITY AND PEACE. It then shows a cool statue of you and player 2 and it has SCRAMBLE SPIRITS engraved in the base. Below the pic it says THE DEEDS OF EARTH'S BRAVE WARRIORS WERE REVEALED TO THE PEOPLE AND..THE STORY OF THEIR HEROIC ACTIONS WILL BE HANDED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. The music ends and it re- turns you to Level 1. SMURFS 2, THE - SMURFS TRAVEL THE WORLD (Infogrames) -The last officially released game for the SMS in Europe, this game wasn't even known to the online community until someone discovered it in Prague in 2000. It is therefore the holy grail to most Master System collectors. There are 6 Levels in this game. Each level is divided into 3 stages. In each stage you must find a certain number of crystals that are scattered throughout the area. When you find the last crystal you complete the stage. When you find the last crystal in Level 6-3 it will show the world map and say WELL DONE!!! under it. It then shows a picture of you and Smurfette and says WHAT A RELIEF TO BE HOME AFTER SUCH A LONG TRIP! It then goes to a black screen with blue X's fluttering around it and says CONGRATULATIONS! with your FINAL SCORE under it. After a few moments the staff credits start flashing by. After the credits it goes back to the title screen. Also, it doesn't matter if you play the game on EASY or HARD difficulty nor does it matter what Smurf you played as. You will get the same ending no matter what. STRIDER II (US Gold) -Definitely not the best port of a Strider game for a home system. This was not a SMS release in the US, but only in Europe and Brazil. There are a total of 5 stages to play through and if you know exactly where to go, the game can be completed fairly quickly. When you get to the final boss of Stage 5, a guy with a gun (it's supposed to be the Master, but looks nothing like him), keep blasting/hacking away at him until he is defeated. It will tally your score and then go to a screen showing the girl you just rescued with the message THANK YOU MY HERO underneath her. It is a pretty provocative photo for 8-bit. When you press start it says THE END and then goes to a screen where you can enter your name. Enter your name and it shows the High Scores screen and goes back to the title screen. A pretty shoddy ending for a game released in 1990. I played through the game on EASY and HARD difficulty settings and got that same ending both times. They didn't even reward you for beating it on HARD. Must've been up against a deadline for release. SUPER SPACE INVADERS (Domark) -This one is a tad complicated because of the Game Type and Difficulty set- tings you can choose from at the beginning. There are 2 game types to choose from: NORMAL and ADVANCED. In NORMAL you are always given a choice of a couple different stages to choose from. When you beat that stage you move up to the next section and get to choose from between the next couple of stages. All of the stages have 3 waves of invaders you must destroy before moving on. You pretty much skip some stages as you move up the stages. You will only end up having to play 5 stages, the 5th being the Stage where you will eventually go up against the final boss, a robotic gray alien with long arms that have pin- cers on the end of them. When you destroy it it will show a graphic which I can't really tell what it is, but may just be the alien ship being destroyed. Very hard to tell. Under the pic it says THE LAST ALIEN MOTHER SHIP WAS DES- TROYED BY THE BRAVE MAVERICK 6 FIGHTER. It then shows a pic of the control ship floating to the Earth and says THE ROBOTIC CONTROL SHIP WITH NO FLEET LEFT BEGAN TO BREAK UP. IT SLOWLY DIFTED (sic) TOWARDS EARTH..... The next pic shows the control ship entering Earth's atmosphere and says ON REACHING THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE IT BURNT UP. THE END OF THE INVASION. THE EARTH WAS SAFE. Not best Engrish I've ever seen. It then goes to a screen where you can enter your initials if you got a high score. It then shows the high scores and brings you back to the Game select screen. Now if you played the ADVANCED Game Type you will not get to choose between stages but will play through 12 stages one right after another. As before, each stage has 3 waves of invaders and you will fight bosses after Stages 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 & 12. Stage 12's boss is the same final boss you fought in NORMAL Game Type, the gray robot with the long arms. Defeat him and you get the same exact ending you got when you beat the game in NORMAL mode. Also, the ending is NOT affected by whether you play- ed the game on Easy, Normal or Hard difficulty. SUPERMAN (Virgin) -This game was developed by Sunsoft and released on the SMS in Europe by Virgin Games. It is a short game, as it only has 5 Rounds. It is purely an action game where you simply need to get to the end of each Round and defeat a small boss. When you get to the end of Round 5 and defeat the final boss there will be what looks like a TV screen with 3 missiles floating around it. A man appears on the screen. Hurry up and touch him before he disappears and you have beaten the game. A screen will appear that says GAME COMPLETED at the top and a picture of the DAILY PLANET newspaper that shows a pic of Superman and says SUPERMAN FINDS LOIS. Your score and Best score is shown at the bottom of the screen. It then goes to a screen showing Superman hugging and kissing Lois Lane and CONGRATULATIONS on the bottom. The next pic shows the two of them looking towards you and the following scrolls across the bottom of the screen: CONGRATULATIONS SUPERMAN.... YOU HAVE RESCUED LOIS LANE AND DESTROYED THE STARSHIP.... THE PEOPLE OF EARTH ARE FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT.... Now here is where the endings differ. If you finished the game on EASY or MEDIUM difficulty, the next lineS will say the following: YOU ARE A REAL HERO.... NOW PLAY THE GAME ON A HIGHER DIFFICULTY LEVEL.... However, if you finished the game on HARD difficulty, this will be the last lineS of the ending message: YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE GAME ON THE HIGHEST DIFFICULTY LEVEL.... YOU ARE A MEGA HERO... After the ending message scrolls by it will show you the GRAFTGOLD CREATIVE SOFTWARE staff credits and repeat the ending unless you hit one of the but- tons. Do this and it goes to a screen where you can enter your initials. Do this and it shows the high scorers screen and then goes back to the title screen. It was a very short game but at least you get a slightly different ending when you finish the game on the hardest setting. TERMINATOR, THE (Virgin) -For a game released in 1990, this could be one of the shortest action games available for the SMS, though not in the USA, as it was only released in Europe and Brazil. There are 5 short levels. Level 1 might be the longest, as you have to cover a bit of ground to find your way through the level. Level 2 is the city, which is extremely short. Level 3 is just an annoying boss level, where you have to keep shooting the Terminator in the pool hall to the right of the screen until he finally disappears off the right side. Level 4 is in the police station, which is pretty easy if you know where you are going. The final level is the factory. Just stay on the upper half of the level and make your way to the right, then go down the ladders and you will run into the final boss Terminator. Keep blasting him repeatedly until he falls back into the crusher and it automatically crushes him. You will get an ending message on a black screen that says: THE END WITH THE TERMINATOR DESTROYED SARAH STARTED HER NEW LIFE. REESE WAS DEAD BUT LIVED ON IN THE FORM OF HER UNBORN SON. JOHN CONNOR WOULD PROTECT THE HUMAN RACE AS REESE HAD PROTECTED SARAH'S LIFE. Several members of the Virgin Games STAFF will scroll by and you will get to a screen that says PLEASE ENTER YOUR NAME. Enter it and it will show your name on the TERMINATOR TOP SCORES screen (assuming you make it there). It then returns to the opening sequences. This game seems like it was either rushed for release, unfinished or probably both. WANTED (Sega) -This is a fairly difficult light gun game. There are a total of 7 stages (called Scenes) with 2 bonus stages (called Challenge Scenes) after Scenes 2 & 4. When you get to the end of Scene 7 you will have to do battle with the Big Boss. He is tough because he will sprint across the screen and you will have to take pot shots at him, while guys are lobbing bombs at you from the windows. This guy is a pain, but if you beat him it will go to a black and white scene showing you on your horse near a try and the following text below you: MY JOB IS DONE...THE PEOPLE ARE SAFE. IT'S TIME TO TURN MY HORSE AND HEAD FOR THE SUNSET. AS LONG AS I WEAR A GUN AND A BADGE, THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THIS TERRITORY. IF THE GUNSLINGERS EVER RETURN. CALL ME AND I'LL BE THERE! THE END. The screen fades to black and a couple screens of staff credits flash by followed by PRESENTED BY SEGA 1989 and back to the title screen. The ending no matter which game difficulty level you play it on. WONDER BOY IN MONSTER WORLD (Sega) -This title is the 4th installment in the Wonder Boy series for the SMS and was only released in 8-bit form in Europe. The SMS market in the USA was more or less dead by the time this came out, so it never came out here, but there is a Genesis version of the game which did come out in the States that is very similar with only a few changes. It's actually a really decent game, much like the SNES Adventure Island titles (which makes sense, since the original WOnder Boy for the SMS is very similar to the original Adventure Island for the NES). You play as Shion, a relative of the original Wonder Boy, who must travel to several different locales collecting items and getting weapons that will ul- timately bring you to the final boss. There are villages, castles, deserts, pyramids, underwater areas and even an ice world to explore. There are a total of 6 bosses in the game (you get to fight 2 of them a 2nd time before the fi- nal boss battle), including the last boss, which is some weird, defenseless creature that exposes its eye every once in awhile for you to hit. Avoid the roving guns and just hack away when it opens its eye. It will explode and then the screen will go to a black starry space setting showing the planet you were just on exploding. The following text will then scroll by: FINALLY, THE LONG, TREACHEROUS JOURNEY HAS REACHED IT'S END. NONE OF THE PEOPLE IN MONSTER WORLD WILL EVER FORGET WHAT THEY'VE BEEN THROUGH, NOR WILL THEY FORGET THE HERO WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES BACK TO THEM. THE STORY OF SHION'S VALIANT STRUGGLE WILL NO DOUBT BE PASSED ON FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. AND SO ENDS ANOTHER EPISODE IN THE ADVENTURES OF "WONDER BOY". THE END appears on the screen in blue letters and then it returns you to the title screen. This game wasn't as polished as Wonder Boy III, but the graphics and gameplay were good enough that it shouldn't have been as overlooked as it was. ZOOL (Gremlin Graphics) -This version of Zool for the SMS was released in Europe only. Not even Brazil got a version of this. It is different from any of the other releases (Amiga, SNES, etc.). You have to go through each Area collecting 99 items before a giant coin with Zool on it appears. Grab the coin and you finish the stage. There are a total of 5 Areas with each Area having 4 stages. The 4th stage of each Area is a boss battle. When you reach Area 5.4 you will face off against Maxie the Robot. Defeat Maxie and it will show Zool in his spaceship flying through each of the Areas of the game. When you are finally done flying it shows Zool reunited with his family and says CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE AIDED ZOOL IN HIS QUEST TO RETURN TO THE 'Nth' DIMENSION. YOU MAY NOW CLAIM THE TITLE OF 'INTERGALACTIC NINJA'. I thought Zen was the Intergalactic Ninja??? It then shows the words THE END bouncing above Zen and his family and shows staff credits beneath them. It ends with SAYANARA! COPYRIGHT GREMLIN GRAPHICS, 1993 then returns to the title screen. ===================== C. SMS GAMES (BRAZIL) ===================== CHAPOLIM X DRACULA - UM DUELO ASSUSTADOR (Tec Toy) -This is the Brazilian version of Ghost House. The difference here, other than the Spanish text, is that the main character from Ghost House is replaced by a popular Brazilian kids entertainer named Chapolim (or Chapolin). Other- wise, this game is the same as Ghost House. There are a total of 6 Rounds. In each round you must find a key to open a coffin where you will have to fight Dracula. There are 5 coffins to open in each round, making a total of 30 Dracula fights for the game. Each time you defeat a Dracula you get a jewel. Once you have 5 jewels you must find the gate to move on to the next round. When you get to Round 6 and defeat all 5 Draculas (and they are an absolute pain to beat as they are extremely fast), find the gate (on the bottom sec- tion of the house this time) and go through it. You will get the jewel screen that shows the 6 sets of 5 jewels you got from all 6 rounds. It says: PARABENS! ULTIMO BONUS ESPECIAL 5000000 PTS. VOCES NAO CONTAVAM COM MINHA ASTUCIA! OBRIGADO! The next screen it goes to says: JOGADOR 1 FIM DE JOGO It then goes to a cool screen showing Chapolim standing over a coffin with his foot on it holding his hammer with 2 clawed hands sticking out from the cof- fin. This is a full screen graphic of Chapolim and on the right side says: NAO CONTAVAM COM MINHA ASTUCIA! It says FIM in small letters on the bottom right. It will then return you to the title screen. ECCO - THE TIDES OF TIME (Tec Toy) -Another Brazilian-only SMS release (though available worldwide on the Game Gear), this sequel to the original Ecco the Dolphin isn't as tight at the first one, but Ecco fans probably enjoyed getting more of their dolphin. There are a total of 24 levels. The levels are not numbered, but if you go by the FAQ for the game at gamefaqs you will see that there are 24 separate levels to play through. The harder ones involve finding globes in 2 consectutive levels. In Level 21 you will fight the Queen Vortex, who is much less imposing than she was in the first Ecco. You will have 2 easy levels after that and a final Level 24, where you must solve a puzzle and then swim into the time machine, firing your sonar into it to activate it. The disappointing thing here is that once you activate the machine Ecco will spiral through time but instead of a cool ending it goes right to the scrolling CREDITOS (all language in the game is Portuguese I believe, since it was a Brazil-only release). Once the credits are over it says OBRIGADO POR JOGAR ECCO, which I believe means Thank You for Playing. It then returns you to the title screen. A pretty weak ending for a fairly time consuming game. MICKEY'S ULTIMATE CHALLENGE (Tec Toy) -Only released in Brazil on the SMS, the game was developed by Hi-Tech Expressions but released in Brazil by Tec Toy. This is more of a puzzle challenge than it is an action game. There are 5 items you need to find. To find them you must enter one of the 5 doors in the castle and complete a challenge. You will have to sort books, move potions (a boxxle type game), dust pictures (memory matching game), play musical pipes (a memory game like Simon) and lastly guess which items are in Goofy's toolbox. When you finish each game the character running the game will give you an item. Once you have all 5 items you have to go back to each of the 5 characters and they will each give you a magic bean. Bring the beans to the well and a giant beanstalk will grow out of the well. Mickey will climb it where it brings him to the giant in the sky, where you will have to complete one of those annoying sli- ding puzzles. Complete this puzzle to beat the game. Now there are 3 diffi- culty levels: Cake, Medium and Hard. The difficulty level you choose affects how each of the challenges in the game will play out, whether they are longer on hard or there were more pictures to dust in the memory matching game. The difficulty really makes a difference in this game, especially on that last sliding puzzle. On Cake difficulty there are only 9 pieces to slide around but on Hard difficulty there are 36 pieces. Regardless, you get the same end- ing no matter what difficulty you choose. Once you complete the sliding puz- zle (which is an alarm clock), the alarm will go off and the giant will wake up. He will say: HUH? WH-WH-- HEY! DID YOU JUST WAKE ME UP?! You will then get 2 options to choose from for your answer: 1--> UH, I G-GUESS IT WAS M-ME. 2--> N-NOT EXACTLY, MR. GIANT, SIR. If you choose 2 he will say OH, THEN I MUST BE DREAMING. GOOD NIGHT. He will go back to sleep and reshuffle the puzzle, making you start over. If you choose 1 he says WELL, THANK YOU! I WAS HAVING THE STRANGEST DREAM AND COULDN'T SEEM TO WAKE UP. The screen switches to a pic of Mickey lying in bed and the alarm goes off, followed by the text: R-R-RING!!! GOLLY. I GUESS I FELL ASLEEP WHILE I WAS READING THIS BOOK...I WONDER HOW IT ENDED..? It then shows a pic of Mickey shaking the Giant's hand and says ...AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Mickey then says ...WHA-? It switches to the staff credits and they scroll by to cute Disney music and silhouettes of Mickey in the back- ground and the credits end with ...AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE GUYS AT ECHID- NA FOR tUME, THE UNIVERSAL MAP EDITOR. THE END. It then goes back to the title screen when you hit a button. This game, released in 1998, is the last offi- cial game released for the Sega Master System. SITIO DO PICAPAU AMARELO (Tec Toy) -This was one of the last SMS released in Brazil and is based on the child- ren's books by Brazilian writer Monteiro Lobato. The title translates dir- ectly to The Yellow Woodpecker Ranch (thanks to PilsARational for his great FAQ on the game and this info). As for the game itself, it does not control well, as there is a lot of jumping required and the jumping technique is sluggish, in that you have to tap in the direction you are facing and then hold down the controller in that direction once you have tapped. Your goal in the game is to track down the items necessary to make a potion to cure your aunt. The stages are not numbered but there are about 11 different areas to play through and collect items, like the blue spiders in the 3rd area and the Blood of teh Giant Dragon in the 4th area. Eventually you will reach the witch, who has the final ingredient, her tears. In this final boss battle you must hit the witch a number of times with your slingshot to defeat her. The only problem is that if she hits you once you turn into a frog and lose a life. This battle is not easy but if you manage to defeat her it will go to a cut scene and then back to the area where you fought her. She is tied up now so just walk up to her and you will automatically collect her tears. It then goes to a cut scene that shows her tied up and crying and says: "PAREM COM ESTE PINGO QUE JA ESTA ME PONDO LOUCA! TENHAM DO DUMA POBRE VELHA..." "ESTA BEM. MAS VOCE JURA DEIXAR-ME SAIR DAQUI EM PAZ?" "JURO..." This is followed by another cut scene showing your aunt being given the mede- cine and yet another scene showing the kids, aunt and old lady as well as 2 tiny characters celebrating at her bedside: "A TIA NASTACIA ACORDOU! EEEEEH..." Lastly, a final scene shows everyone outside of the house at night with a campfire going and the moon shining above the hills. Everyone lives happily ever after. The screen fades to black and the credits scroll by. I would not recommend this game unless you are a fan of the book series and even then I probably still wouldn't recommend it. After the credits it goes back to the SEGA screen. I only played through this game because it was short and I wanted to say I beat a game on Leap Year 2/29/16. VIRTUA FIGHTER ANIMATION (Tec Toy) -This is a really late release Brazilian-only SMS game. It is like all your other fighting games of the era, except here they have long story interludes between each fight to make it interesting, but that is just in the Story mode of the game. In Story mode you have 8 opponents to defeat. When you defeat an opponent you can choose to fight as them against your next opponent (except when you beat Kage the first time). Your opponents, in order, are: Pai, Jacky, Kage, Wolf, Kage (2nd time), Sarah, Lau and Dural, who is a robot and tough to beat. When you manage to defeat Dural it will go to the normal WINNER screen then a black screen with the dialogue: NOOOOOO! DURAL WAS THE ULTIMATE WEAPON! HOW COULD YOU... Screen changes to the group standing together tri- umphantly with various team members saying: WELL DONE! WHERE'S THE CHALLENGE? WE DID IT! AKIRA. WE HAVE SUCCEEDED. YES, IT IS TRULY OVER, THIS TIME. THANK YOU ALL. NO PROBLEM. LIU NEEDED TO BE TAKEN DOWN. I WAS GLAD TO BE A PART OF THAT. WE COULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS ALONE. WE ARE A TEAM, NOW.AND, BETTER YET, FRIENDS. The picture now changes to a starry sky with the following words be- low it: HIGH ABOVE AKIRA AND HIS ALLIES, A STAR SHINES, AND HOPE RINGS ETER- NAL... Some digitized Asian voice says something and then the staff credits roll and stop at THE END written in script. It then returns to the title screen. That was just Story mode. In VS COM mode you must fight through 8 total opponents (the same 8 you beat in Story mode, plus a clone of yourself) but it is just one fight after another, with no story interjected into it. After you beat your clone (Match 7) you will face Dural (Match 8). Defeat him and it will go to the WINNER screen as usual, you will hear the Asian voice like you do after winning every match and then you will get a one screen end- ing that shows a gold square on a blue screen that reads CONGRATULATION!! YOU ARE A SUPER FIGHTER! THANKS FOR PLAYING. Pressing a button brings you back to the title screen. Glad to see you got two different endings for the two modes. X-MEN - MOJO WORLD (Sega) -A rather short action game, released only in Brazil for the SMS (but on the Game Gear elsewhere). There are only 6 levels to play through. You can choose to play as Wolverine or Rogue to start with but gain more allies each time you finish a level. You will eventually rescue and get to play as Gambit, Cyclops, Havok and Shard. Each level has its own boss fight. The villains include Mag- neto (only the 2nd level boss here), the giant Sentinel, Fitzroy and lastly Mojo, who you fight at the end of Level 6. He comes at you in a hover chair sporting a giant scorpion tail. Slug it out with him and when you defeat him it will go to a screenshowing 4 of the X-Men (Wolverine, Rogue, Cyclops and Shard) standing on some rocks before the hot sun. It stays here until you hit a button then will go to a screen that says GAME OVER, X-MEN with your score and the HiScore underneath. Pressing a button will get you through 3 screens of Game Credits (among which is listed the SMS game legend Clint Dyer) and then back to the title screen. Not much of an ending here. There are 2 diffi- culty levels to choose from, MANIAC and SUICIDAL, but I played through the game on both difficulties and got the same exact ending for both. ==================== D. SMS GAMES (JAPAN) ==================== ALEX KIDD - BMX TRIAL (Sega) -This is a rare Japanese only SMS game (Sega Mark III) that game with its own paddle controller. In it you must guide Alex Kidd through 5 Scenes. Each scene has more than one exit, so you will want to make sure to take the right one and not get sent back to a previous scene. The 5 Scenese are: Blackwood Forest, Cactus Desert, South Seas, Pyramid River and Radaxian, which is Alex's home. When you get to Radaxian do not take any of the exits, but look for a really narrow passageway later in the level. This will lead to Alex's castle and the game's ending. Drive into the castle and you will be greeted by what looks like the Queen and possibly Alex's 2 siblings. The Queen is on her throne and there is a red banner that says CONGRATULATIONS! Alex skids to a halt and flashes the peace sign. It then goes to a green screen and the fol- lowing scrolling message: CONGRATULATIONS, ALEX! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ACCOM- PLISHED YOUR MISSION. TAKE A REST SO AS TO BE READY TO FACE YOUR NEXT TRIAL... I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN. THE END. It will then go back to the title screen. I wasn't expecting much of an ending from this game released in 1987, but it came through. It's kind of like an early version of Road Rash, as you can punch other riders as you go. ASTRO FLASH (Sega) -This is simply the Japanese version of Transbot. For a more detailed game ending description, see Transbot, but the short version is that this game has no ending. To get to the underground section where the boss is, you must destroy the blue star enemy with your D ship. If you do this a tunnel leading to the underground area will appear shortly thereafter. If you do not do this the game will loop infinitely. When underground you will go through a stage with a boss named Elgramzon at the end. Defeat it with 10 shots and you go back above ground. Rinse and repeat. These are the only 2 areas in the game, above and below ground. Sega really dropped the ball here by not putting at least a one screen text ending in here. GALACTIC PROTECTOR (Sega) -This was a Japan-only SMS release. The game reminds me of a combination be- tween Asteroids, Missile Command and Gyruss. Defend your planet from the attacking hordes. There are a total of 25 Rounds. When you finish Round 25 it tallies up your score as usual, then it goes to a colorful screen showing the red and blue ships that you (and your teammate, if you had one) controlled during the game parked on a beach with a palm tree and a big red sun setting. It will stay here until it eventually goes back to the title screen. No staff credits or ending message, but at least you got something out of this obscure Japanese SMS game other than an endless loop. MEGUMI RESCUE (Sega) -A fun variant of the game Breakout where you must use a trampoline to bounce your fireman up in front of a burning building to rescue people in the win- dows. A very similar version of this game is available for the Famicom called Flying Hero, which was almost released in the USA on the NES as Blazebusters. There are a total of 30 Actions (name for the stages in this game). You have a certain number of people to rescue on each stage and it varies from stage to stage (or Action to Action). When you rescue all the trapped people in Action 30 the firetruck will come get you as usual and fire the missile to destroy the burning building. It will then go to a screen which shows three fireman sitting in front of an Oriental-style building drinking what is prob- ably sake with the words: ALL ROUND FINISHED!! appearing above them. It will then show the words: YOU ARE PERFECT RESCUER A tiny rescue helicopter then makes its way across the screen dropping off letters that spell out the words THE END. You then go back to the title screen. This game was only released by Sega in Japan. WOODY POP (J) (Sega) -There are apparently 52 rooms in this game with multiple paths you can take (according to this site: http://www.defunctgames.com/shows.php?id=review-912). There are 3 levels of difficulty in this Break Out/Arkanoid clone: Beginner, Average and Expert. When you play through Beginner you will eventually reach what looks like a spider boss. Break all the blocks in his room and go up into a room with a giant gumball machine. The goal here is to break the blocks above it to release the 10 cent coin into the gumball machine. This will cause all the gumballs to come out and you will get the message CONGRATULATIONS TRY AGAIN ANOTHER COURSE. It then goes to the title screen. Now play through on Average difficulty and you get the exact same thing with the exact same TRY AGAIN ANOTHER COURSE message. Finally, play through on Expert difficulty and get the coin to drop in the gumball machine a 3rd time and you are re- warded with...the same ending. Perhaps you have to play through the game in a particular path to get the correct ending? It is an older game so maybe this is the actual ending, but there has to be more than this for beating it on the Expert difficulty I would imagine. As a side note, this game was released in Japan only for the SMS. ================ E. SG-1000 GAMES ================ BORDERLINE (Sega) -A cool vertically auto-scrolling shooter where you control a jeep that can shoot straight up and from side to side. When you make it through a Round you will get a screen where you have to knock out several objects at the top of the screen. Get past this screen and you have another similar screen where you have to knock out the same 9 objects. On the next screen there will be the enemy base at the top of the screen. Make your way up there and blast through the shield to knock it out. You will then move on to Round 2, which is pretty much exactly the same as Round 1, except the enemies move faster. This game does go on forever. When you clear Round 99 you will go on to the next Round, Round :0, then after that it's Round :1 and so forth. I really don't know what beating this game should consist of, so maybe you might want to just set a realistic high score to aim for and go for that, unless you really want to finish 99 Rounds of the game, which would be quite difficult and tedious. FLICKY (Sega) -I remember when this came out for the Sega Genesis in the 90s it was marketed as an "affordable" game with a couple other titles. Like its Genesis counter- part, this version of Flicky is the same exact game, minus the updated graph- ics. It plays like an old school arcade title, as you have to run around the stage and collect the chicks, bringing them all to the exit while avoiding the cats to finish a round. Every 3rd round or so you get a bonus round where the cats throw a bunch of chicks in the air and you must catch them in a basket. There are a total of 99 Rounds. When you finish Round 99, which happens to be a bonus round, it simply returns you to Round 1. There is no ending or ending message to be found here, but frankly who would have expected one on an old SG-1000. It's not like you were playing Gulkave or something. GOLGO 13 (Sega) -Not too many people are aware of this game's existence. Golgo 13 for the NES was an excellent game, complete with a James Bond type plot, mystery, many characters to interact with and one of the hardest bosses in any game to de- feat. This version of Golgo 13 is a simple arcade game, where you control Duke Togo in a car at the bottom of the screen and must shoot the windows out of a train to free hostages. Shoot all the windows out and go to the next round. The games are similar in name only. There are a total of 99 rounds to play through. When you get to Round 10 the sky changes from blue to red, but other than that you will play the next 89 rounds with a red sky. When you finish Round 99 it simply goes to Round 1, but the sky remains red instead of chang- ing back to blue. There is no ending or message here whatsoever. GULKAVE (Sega) -One of Compile's earlier shooters, this game pleasantly surprised me in how cool it was and in the ending itself. It is a pretty basic shooter. There are a total of 30 stages (called Acts). There are mini bosses in some of the acts but at the end of Acts 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26 and 30 you will get to blast away an enemy fortress. When you defeat the 8th enemy fortress at the end of Act 30 it will tally up your points, including the lives you had left at 10000 pts each (called LEFT FIGHTER). For an old game I wasn't expecting the ending message that followed: CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU HAVE DESTROYED THE 8 FORTRESSES THEREFORE THE GULBAS IS DESTROYED... Several staff credits scroll by followed by GULKAVE in big letters then you get the following message: SPECIAL PRESENTS FOR YOU! WHILE DISPLAYING DEMO PUSH KEY OR TURN JOY-STICK ^ ^ v v ^ > v < v v THEN YOU CAN USE TEST MODE THANK YOU AND SEE YOU AGAIN ORIGINAL GAME COPYRIGHT SEGA 1986 You get a GAME OVER screen (which I don't mind in this case since there was an actual ending message, then you get to enter your initials on THE BEST PLAYERS OF GULKAVE screen which shows your Rank, Score, Name and Act finished on (it says FINISH if you beat the game). It then brings you to the title screen. Now if you input the above code at the title screen you can not only do a Sound Test but you can choose the HARD difficulty (instead of the default NORMAL difficulty). It gets better. Play through the game on HARD difficulty and it will tally your score when you finish Act 30 and you'll get this mess- age: HARD MODE DE ## (number of men) MEN CLEAR DEKIRUYATSUGA IRUTOWA YUMENIMO OMOIMASENDESHITA ANTA HONTONI NINGEN NANO? YOU ARE PERFECT PLAYER! CZ QSPHSBNNFS QBD GVKJTIJNB (not sure what this gibberish is) FROM GAME DESIGNER PAC THANK YOU AND SEE YOU AGAIN You get the GAME OVER screen and get to enter your initials like when you beat it the first time through. It's really cool that you get a different ending when beating the game on the secret HARD mode. If anyone knows what the Jap- anese means in the 2nd ending, I'd love to know. H.E.R.O. (Sega) -Sega reprogrammed this classic computer game by Activision for release on their early SG-1000 system. It plays like the previous versions, except you now have a jet pack instead of a helicopter pack. There are a grand total of 20 Acts to play through. At the end of Act 20 you will reach a room at the bottom of the mine with solid walls on each side, water covering the bottom and 3 enemies in the room. You will trigger the lamp entering the room so it will be dark within seconds of entering. There is no way to escape from this room. If you started the level by heading north and make it to the end that way you will simply restart the level over. Just consider making it to that room at the end of Act 20 as finishing the game. WONDER BOY (Sega) -The first Wonder Boy game released on a Sega home console, albeit in Japan only. There are a total of 5 areas to play through. When you defeat the boss of Area 5 it will tally up your bonus points and then show you standing next to your girlfriend with a bunch of small blue hearts making up a giant heart with the word FIN in the center. It then brings you back to the start of Area 5. At least we got that one ending screen, which is pretty good for an old SG-1000 game. ZAXXON (Sega) -This is like the classic arcade game, released in Japan for the SG-1000. The object of the game is to make it through a Round and destroy the Zaxxon Robot ship at the end of the Round. Each Round is divided into 4 areas. At the end of each area you go into space for a shooter battle against various aircraft and at the end of the 4th area is where you will fight the Zaxxon Robot ship. Just keep firing at the ship as fast as you can, aiming for the center mis- sile. Sometimes if you are lucky enough the ship will explode quickly if you hit it just right but most of the time it will take quite a few shots and will fire it's missile at you after about 15 seconds. The missile is hard to avoid but if you avoid it or destroy it you will be able to blast away at the ship unchallenged to defeat it. Once you destroy it you go to the next Round, which is the exact same thing. The main difference I noticed is that when you destroy the Zaxxon Robot ship at the end of Round 2, when you begin Round 3 and have to fly through the initial opening in the wall there is now a force field on the right side of the opening, making the gap a lot smaller to fly through. So does this game have an ending? As far as I know, it loops infin- itely. However, thanks to some code hacking, I found out that if you somehow managed to make it to Round 99 and destroy the Zaxxon Robot ship at the end of the Round you will return to Round 1 and it will be a true Round 1 because the force field is no longer in the opening of the wall. So there is no end- ing but at least the game loops back to Round 1 after Round 99. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= IV. I do all the endings myself, but once in awhile if I get stuck I will definitely credit whoever helps me pull myself out of the muck. I also should make a list of people who made codes to help me beat some of the games but I'll save that for another time. Thanks to the code finders at thegshi.org. Guys like Mezmorize, nolberto82, Hybrid and several others (who I will add to this list when I have time) have come up with some great codes for many of the SMS games on this list. Thanks to www.smspower.org. Omar and company have been around as long as I can remember and will always be THE go-to SMS site on the web, as far as I'm concerned. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= VI.
