---------- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05 Title: Date Bars Categories: Cookies Yield: 36 servings 1 c Packed brown sugar 1 c Margarine or butter; -softened 1 3/4 c All-purpose* or whole Wheat flour 1/2 ts Salt 1/2 ts Baking soda 1 1/2 c Quick-cooking oats Date filling 3 c Cut-up pitted dates ; (1 pound) 1/4 c Sugar 1 1/2 c Water *if using self-rising flour --- omit Salt and baking soda. Recipe by: Betty Crocker's Cookbook Prepare Date Filling (below); cool. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease rectangular pan, 13 X 9 X 2 inches. Mix brown sugar and margarine. Mix in remaining ingredients until crumbly. Press half of the crumb mixture evenly in bottom of pan. Spread with Date Filling. Top with remaining crumb mixture, pressing lightly. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until light brown; cool slightly. Cut into 2 X 1-1/2-inch bars. 36 BARS; 135 CALORIES PER BAR. DATE FILLING Cook all ingredients over low heat 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened. -----
