                               Birds Nests

  Amount  Measure       Ingredient -- Preparation Method

     1/2  cup           butter or margarine
     1/2  cup           shortening
     1/2  cup           brown sugar
   2      cups          flour
     1/2  teaspoon      salt
   1      teaspoon      vanilla
   2      each          egg whites -- beaten slightly
     1/4  cup           walnuts -- crushed
     1/4  cup           jam

Combine butter, shortening, brown sugar, flour, salt, and vanilla.  Roll into
1" balls.  Roll balls in egg whites and then roll in crushed walnuts.  Put
finger indention in center.  Fill with jam.  Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.

NOTES : This recipe came from Sherrie.  She sent them to her husband one
Christmas and I tasted them at his home.  They were delicious and I
immediately contacted her for her recipe.  We really missed her that
Christmas!!!  :(
