Notes: Judges loved her subtle, barely sweet cookies with their crackly sesame-seed coating. Susan Chong said she came up with her winning recipe last Chinese New Year to suit the tastes of her husband, Edward, who is Chinese. The original recipe called for rolling the cookies in powdered sugar. "My husband doesn't like really sweet desserts, so I decided to put sesame seeds on them," she explained. Also, adding the sesame seeds made the cookies seem "a little more Asian" for Chinese New Year, she said. The revised cookies were a hit with everyone who tried them. Around Christmas, she puts a little red or green food coloring into the dough to make the cookies more festive. Recipe by Susan Chong Source: San Diego Union-Tribune 1998 Holiday Cookie Contest MMMMM
