This is a phlog post about how gopher fixed my email. It sounds like an 
odd thing for gopher to fix, but let me tell a story. When I joined 
sdf.org I was excited to explore it's features, one of them being gopher.

As I began to explore the sfd phlogs I ran across sysdharma's phlog. I 
really liked how he had his setup. This was before I had learned about 
gophermaps and honestly only knew a bit about gopher. So I decided to 
email him to ask him some questions.

I then proceeded to do what I should have done in the first place which 
was to RTFM and actually do some research, but I'll give myself a pass 
because I was really excited, his site looked awesome to me, and when you 
work in computers and have tinkered with computers for over forty years, 
those moments of excitement become way less often.

Anyway, back to how gopher fixed my email. A day or two passed and I had 
not heard back from sysdharma but I was reading the sdf phlogs and saw 
that he had an update. So I loaded up his phlog only to see:

Wait what? A phlog directed to me?

As it turns out there was a critical problem with my sdf.org email. The 
sdf nospam function that enabled procmail it turns out should not be 
usable by "user" level accounts (I've emailed sdf to ask about this) 
despite being listed in the welcome emails.

By enabling it I had effectively broken all inbound mail to 
snowcrash@sdf.org. I have to give kudos and thanks to sysdharma for 
pointing this out to me, without his creative use of his gopher phlog as 
a means to communicate directly with me, it might have been a long time 
before I figured out that my email was fubar.
