2022-06-10 from the editor of ~insom ------------------------------------------------------------ So I was without power for a bit. I wrote about it on my blog: => https://www.insom.me.uk/2022/05/29/outage.html Honestly, parts of it were a nice experience. Yes, wasting all of the good from my fridge and freezer sucked, but it was really chill to not be able to do very much for a few days. I had books (and a Kindle with some charge), enough LTE and battery to judiciously use the Internet, but not enough to doom scroll. We had flash lights and enough Ryobi batteries to do some light work (cutting down branches, mowing the lawn). When I had to go back to work, it was a bit harder: I was going over to the other side of the city to work from the non-profit my wife works at. They had power but not Internet, although their power went out at one point, too. That clearly marked the end of that day's work. So, it's not like I recommend getting hit with a massive storm, but a few days without as many creature comforts as usual made me appreciate things more. --- A couple of entries ago I mentioned the Breeders album "Pod" and how it's not just nostalgia: it's a straight-up great album. In the spirit of collecting media for things I've enjoyed for years I picked up "The Crow: City of Angels" on DVD, second-hand from eBay. I couldn't find this film anywhere to stream legitimately, possibly because it's a Miramax film. I don't like to rip off media if I can help it (although buying a DVD second-hand doesn't put any money into Miramax anyway). It arrived today and I've given it a watch. Wow this film is NOT good. I remember really liking it as a teenager and I haven't watched it for a very very long time but it's barely a film -- in some ways it's like a music video. It _looks_ great. The production design is moody and has a 90's industrial feel, costumes, lighting, it has it all. It's also really sexy; a lot of it takes place in fetish clubs and a sex shop and there's plenty of light BDSM and leather. It even has excellent music, I still listen to the soundtrack regularly. But it's like if NIN's Closer was 90 minutes long. And every character seems to speak in quotable one-liners. Pretty, but not what most people want from a movie. (For real tho: the soundtrack is amazing. Filter, PJ Harvey, Hole, Bush, Tricky, Iggy Pop -- so, so good.)
