That is absolutely true (the port handoff problem), but unfortunately I no 
longer remember the details. I was trying it under Win98, though, and haven't 
tried it under XP. The problem is that a DOS program needs exclusive use of the 
port, and won't let go of it until it terminates. When it does, it's parent DOS 
program (in this case, the DOS command interpreter) inherits it and won't let 
go.

With XP, the command interpreter is a completely different (32-bit) beast, the 
problem might no longer exists.
