Gmail does have some intrinsic value. The search feature came in handy
when I needed to search for legal documents in my mail archive. I use it
now, because, eh.

I'd like to go back to self-hosting, it's in my blood - both
professionally and as a guy who's had a BBS running in his house since
1990.

The problem is that the big providers make money off of data from "free"
email users' information and, in my opinion, are inclined to mark as
SPAM mail not from other large providers.

My primary domain is hosted at Dreamhost. I could leave mail there and
read it via webmail, use an IMAP client, or download it via POP. I'm
tempted to do the last option, so mail sits on an encrypted volume at my
house instead of on someone else's computer. it's cleartext in
transit, but you'd have to catch it coming in.
