A lot of people probably did hear about the drones and are now
misidentifying other objects as drones.

However, there is also video footage of the drones.  They look bigger than
what most hobbiest would be using.  One in particular shows three hovering
in formation and blinking their lights in unison.

Another shows a bunch of drones flying in formation while the sky below keeps
lighting up.  I suspect that footage may be of some sort of airshow that
was using search lights in unison with the formations.

Aside from the possible airshow, I suspect some of the instances where the
viewer really saw drones are military or some other government drones.
