Don't be afraid of picking a higher spec either.  

I found a deal on new M4 24GB Mem/512GB SSD with AppleCare that was just a couple hundred over the base model rather than the usual nearly-double differential.  

I did not want to claim a education discount.  

When my dock arrives my end spec should be:

M4 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU
24 GB unified RAM
512 GB internal SSD storage, with two 2-TB SSDs in the dock in Raid-1 configuration 

Total of 2 USB-C, 3 USB-A 10Gbps(USB 3.2 Gen 2 type), 3 Thunderbolt-4, 1 HDMI, 2 DisplayPort 1.3, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, usual audio, SD 4.0 + TF 4.0 sockets

Should be able to do up to 3 Displays at 4K, though the third is going to be only 60Hz vs the second DP at 144Hz and then 240Hz for the HDMI port.

One port from the main MacMini will be used with the dock, and the dock as two USB-C ports not counted in my list, one for the linking and another if additional power is needed.
