Packet really is a world unto itself in the amateur world. I know the ARRL wishes it would simply vanish - a wish they've had for decades. They won't even feed any of their bulletins over radio. Years ago they fed me their bulletins direct via 220Mhz. Now they want me to find a way to robotically convert internet email to packet - which I can and do but I won't do it when an RF path exists! Packet has so many takes to it: Classic, 802.11ham/HamWan/HamNet, APRS, Pactor... not to mention the various systems... which was my suggestion for it's own echo however if there's not much chatter about it then no need :) ....
