The idea behind binkp was that eg. existing tosser software could be used together with a new mailer component which then talks to other systems. So your idea would not only replace the mailer but also many other parts of existing software with new programs. And btw, there is already another protocol which exchanges such data based on messages and message lists: NNTP. There is even a SSL-enabled version, NNTPS. I think the key feature of BinkP is the compatibility with existing programs.
