I think it would be challenging and mostly pointless to try to run a BBS 
myself on a sail boat. :)

Synchronet offering NNTP lets me download messages when I do have an 
Internet connection so I can later read/write responses. Later, when I 
am able to connect to the Internet again. I can send queued 
messages/download new ones.

Modern Internet applications really suck for this, good luck trying to 
get this sort of flexibility on Discord, Reddit etc.
