There's no standardized native/DOS door development API either, unless you consider drop files and FOSSIL an "API".

Not "any BBS software", but a lot. The 32-bit OpenDoors implementation supports inherited socket descriptor, inhereited com port handle, or stdio redirection. Not all BBS software packages support these door I/O methods.
