  +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

  PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
  this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
  such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
  (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
  one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Offered information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) PC-ExpressNet(c),
  i) Source section (MugSHot),
  j) Tool report,
  k) List with released utilities and idea's for utilities that need
     to be coded,
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  m) Registrations and changes (November),
  n) All the PC-Express HQ's,
  o) Distributors of this zine,
  p) End notes.

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

 NiGHTSHADE asked if there also could be ANSI's instead of only ASCII's.
 I think that most people know that there are many ASCII artists (Amiga
 scene) around, but just a few ANSI artists. I will try to put a few AN-
 SI's in the archive, but I hope that other people will try to locate
 these ANSI artists and to persuade them to give their drawings for the
 magazine. Thank you for your votesheet NiGHTSHADE.

:  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)  \  /  :
`-----------------------------------------------------------------\/-----'

  Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

  A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
     message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
     mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

  Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
     PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

  A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
     language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
     are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
     are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
     textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
     English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
     now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

  Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

  A: I don't know any ftp sites that hold tools for pc/x. Maybe in the
     future some big servers could have a directory for these tools and
     one or more newsgroups could be started, but for now almost no in-
     formation concerning pc/x is available on The Internet.
                                                                ______

`-----------------------------------------------------------------\/-----'

                  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
                  %% HOW TO SECURE YOUR SYSTEM %%
                  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

 I am aware of the fact that I have a limited experience with PC/X, but
 still I want to write a message with things that can improve the secu-
 rity of your system. There are always people who feel the need to des-
 troy someone's BBS and I know that there are also those kind of people
 that manage to get in anyware, no matter how tight the security gets,
 let's hope that they don't call your BBS... on the other hand we'll try
 to secure PC/X as good as possible, so that the change of waking up,
 turning on your monitor and see that everything is erased gets smaller
 and smaller.

 i. User passwords
    ==============
 - Let the users on your BBS change their passwords regularly,
 - don't let the users use the same password on different systems,
 - don't let the users use passwords that can be easily guessed and al-
   ways let them use combinations of ciphers and letters.

 ii. Conference passwords
     ====================
 - When a conference has a conference-password, announce it one time to
   the specific users and then delete this message; preferably you will
   give the password during a chat with the user,
 - when a user is working in a conference with a conference-password and
   wants to leave your BBS, let him/her join another conference (public)
   so that when calling again, he/she does not automatically join that
   specific conference (he/she doesn't have to do anything). PC-Express
   v1.20 doesn't ask for the conference password when a user automati-
   cally rejoins a conference that has a conference password,
 - change the conference password(s) regularly,
 - use passwords that can't be guessed that easily and that have little
   or nothing to do with yourself like your occupation etc.

 iii. Security levels
      ===============
 - Change your own sec. level to e.g. 10 before leaving your BBS; in
   this way, when a person calls your system with your name and pass-
   word, the damage can be limited. You can easily modify your sec. le-
   vel when you logon again,
 - when you have people on your board that have high sec. level, let
   them change their passwords regularly. Preferably you also put these
   sec. levels back to e.g. 10 and when they call you again you can ad-
   just them. In pratice, this doesn't work that well,
 - install tools that check whether a certain number of people have a
   certain sec. level and that you did not forgot to give the old sec.
   level to someone that has got a temporary sysop access level.

 iv. The system itself
     =================
 - If you decide that you want to have a BBS, make it good and organize
   it even better. Don't put all the tools that you can find into your
   BBS and stuff your batchfiles like the LogOnAll.bat. When someone has
   the intention to hack your system, every tool means extra danger.
   Hacking persons will look what the tool does, count the seconds that
   a tool takes to finish, count the number of tools in a batchfile etc.
   Don't be naive and take care of these "dangers".
 - you can install tools on your system that will check for violations
   such as different user data (e.g. a different sec. level),
 - look out for the "shell-to-dos" command. Preferably don't give anyone
   access to this command, except when you are calling remote or when a
   co-sysop calls; make the sec. level high enough,
 - install tools that don't have backdoors; it has happend before that
   the coder of a certain tool easily had access to DOS when calling
   your BBS. Test the tools well before installing and make the sec. le-
   vel high enough when the door can performs "more-risk" functions,
 - install tools that check for the number of people that have a certain
   sec. level, e.g. the people with level 255. There are archives at the
   pc/x suport centers that contain such doors,
 - be shure to remove the sysop access after someone, to whom you gave
   access, logs off; don't be slovenly,
 - install additional passwords if necessary like a NUP, SP and confe-
   rence password(s),
 - update your "NoAccess.txt" every time something changes; in that way
   people that have access to certain commands (like the "ds"- and "vs"-
   commands) can't download your confidential files,
 - report any mistakes made in your BBS-program so that it can be fixed,
   in that way we'll prevent the danger of a runtime error etc. in futu-
   re versions.

 These are all things that most SysOp's know but sometimes seem to for-
 get. It was my intention to make this list so that SysOp's that don't
 know all the above written advices can learn them and that the expe-
 rienced SysOp could see them quickly in this overview.

 The Doctor.

  Software
  ~~~~~~~~
  What do you need to run with PC-ExpressNet(c)? The same as for running
  with other networks:  A frontend program like  FrontDoor or DBridge, a
  mailer/tosser like FMail (FMail v0.98 supports JAM-base) and a offline
  mail reader  like BlueWave  (as well as for the BBS  as for the user).
  Most programs require that you run with Fossil instead of UART so take
  the trouble and install i.e. X00.  FrontDoor doesn't support JAM-base.
  For a good maintainance a program like Allfix can be use too.
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  The first tool that I got was a tool from MuHaDiB and a pretty usefull
  one since it added all the files from the conference that the user had
  joined to  his/her  flagdatabase.  MuHaDiB also put  the source of his
  tool to the archive,  personally I think  that this  is great  (I also
  said this in the prior magazine :-).  This tool will add all the files
  that were uploaded  since the  last logon  to the flagdatabase of this
  user (the files  from the conference  where the user is located at the
  moment of using the tool).  It works relatively quick and displays all
  the necessary data on the screen. You can give a maximum amount of fi-
  les that can be added to the flagdatabase in one time,  e.g. 50 files.
  MuHaDiB incorporates VERY small documentations into his archives, may-
  be he thinks that everyone understands what he codes but e.g. when co-
  ding a tool named "df.exe"  and that's located  on your HD,  why can't
  it be a Disk Formatter  (see another tool  that he made).  MuHaDiB has
  incorporated  a small documentation into the archive, but I think that
  everyone could  understand how to let  the tool work.  You can use the
  FN-command for this tool,  MuHaDiB already made  a batchfile  for this
  option (located in the archive).
  MugSHot told me to make some remarks  on the way of reading the direc-
  tory listings in PC/X.  You can make your tool works approx. 200 times
  faster by  programming something different.  What you should do  is to
  let the program read the DirX.txt backwards and let to it stop when it
  detects a date that's older  then the date of the last logon.  This is
  usefull at all times, but especially when reading large directory lis-
  tings.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    An extra option for PC/X v1.18+.

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  (XCaLBuR) has made his version of a textfile cutter, e.g. to cut
  the LogX.txt file from your BBS. It works relatively fast. You can cut
  to a maximum number of lines and/or to a specific amount of kb. The
  coder provides us with a very small document with this tool, but there
  is not much to say about this tool and the help that you get when you
  execute it without parameters says it all. One small thing, if someone
  wants to cut a LogX.txt to a specific amount of kb and/or a number of
  lines, make shure that the first entry in that logfile is complete,
  rather then to cut it exactly at e.g. 25 lines. No matter what we can
  say about this tool, it does it's work good...

  This is the first tool from the SysOp of the PC/X Austrian HQ named
  Black Eagle. He provides us with an Sent-By string editor for v1.20+.
  With the tool, Black Eagle provides a good documentation on how to use
  this program. Although a sent string is just one option of a W-door,
  he has made a whole tool out of it. It, however, could be nice if
  users could type "sent" at your BBS and edit their string. Let's be
  fair and look at what a Sent-By editor should have:

  This is a Sent-By editor for Ami-Express. The capture is made on "Last
  Outpost" by Caligula. The program is made by Bobo. This is what I call
  a Sent-By editor. The above also is the idea for an editor which would
  be made by us (PC/X DHQ), but since Black Eagle decided to code an
  editor I decided to exchange ideas so that users get a great editor.

  As you can see, you can't do it alone because, for making a good edi-
  tor, you must be able to edit the use of the file_id.diz descriptions,
  use or don't use the tag-line, edit the amount of timeout seconds, be
  able to use a full screen editor (this option can be disabled if you
  want) and use a logo-list (this you can do). I have already contacted
  the author of PC/X about these features and hopefully the users can
  edit those things in future versions.

  Apparantly PC-Express v1.20 is not ready for these tools yet; I wish
  it was ...

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  The one and only tool released by iNFLUENCE this month. Too bad, they
  make nice tools and now you get one :-). Nevertheless DOC HOLiDAY has
  done it again, another tool for PC/X v1.20+, a tool with which you can
  change your upload string. He provides a sufficient documentation with
  the tools so it should be no problem installing it (for beginning Sys-
  Op's). The program itself works relatively slow; you'll have to smash
  your keyboard many times and at the beginning a few sentences are au-
  tomatically written down by the program. There is a window in which 2
  lines are written down: Your Sent By string and the question if you
  wish to change it. The cursor-keys are not 100% programmed, because
  you cannot go all the directions that you want (in the horizontal pla-
  ne :-). When you don't want to change your string, another sentence is
  written down by the program and a part of your string is not erased.
  After that you can smash a key and you'll be taken back to the BBS.
  When you press on "YES" at the question whether or not you want to
  change your string, two other sentences are written down. In the first
  sentence, you're able to enter a new string. When you decide that you
  don't want to change it afterall, normally you can press ESC and no
  harm is done, but that doesn't count in this tool. Pressing ESC will
  result in an empty string. When you do want to change it, the old sent
  by string is erased, but not 100%; some parts are still at the end of
  input screen. It seems that this tool was coded (very) quickly and was
  released without thoroughly testing it. The ANSI delived with this
  tool is very beautifull, however.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Possibly quickly coded and not thoroughly tested Sent By editor.
