ymodem.org gopher://ymodem.org/ By hand ymodem.org gopher hole Thu, 8 Jul 2021 13:47:25 CDT Reflections on 2020 Thu, 8 Jul 2021 13:47:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2021/last_year.txt reading list because I just haven't felt like reading much lately. I haven't felt much like doing much, to be honest. I'm fine, really, but I decided to write up some thoughts about the Eternal 2020 anyway.

Read Somethin' Will Ya? Tue, 16 Mar 2021 12:37:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/h/readinglist/2021.html The Long Earth and before I jumped into the second book in the series, I found a trove of old mass-market paperback reprints of some comics that I bought about a year ago and then put in a bag and forgot about, so I figured I'd read through them as sort of a brain-cleanser. Updated the reading list accordingly. I also found two NES games in the bag that I forgot that I purchased: Super C and Kabuki Quantum Fighter. So that was a nice bonus

New Year, Same old S...tuff Wed, 24 Feb 2021 07:17:00 CST gopher://ymodem.org/h/readinglist/2021.html 2021 is here! It looks a whole lot like 2020 so far. That will probably change eventually. I hope. I started a reading list for 2021. I didn't read nearly as many books as I wanted to last year for a variety of reasons that I don't want to go into here. I still bought a bunch, though, because I'm apparently incorrigible.

I also made zmodem.org a landing page for most of my projects so that it's a one-stop shop that I can point people to show how many projects I'm currently ignoring.

The Sprint to the end of the Year Fri, 11 Dec 2020 13:14:00 CST gopher://ymodem.org/h/readinglist/2020.html reading list, so I'll take that as a win. ]]> This Gopher Hole Thu, 11 Nov 2020 11:06:00 CST gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2020/gopherhole.txt a phlog entry talking about it today, and I got a little more nostalgic for the Old Web(tm) than I anticipated. I updated the reading list, too. ]]> What do you want? Thu, 7 May 2020 13:21:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2020/whatdoyouwant.txt introspective today. I also managed to read a book, so I updated the reading list, too. I'm exhausted. ]]> The OS Dance Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:05:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2020/theosdance.txt re-installed FreeBSD on my daily driver again.I know that nobody cares what OS I run or why I switched back to it in the first place. To the TL;DR version is that I did it to make my recreational computing fun again. Because I missed having fun when I used my computer.]]> Happy (belated) New Year Tue, 25 Feb 2020 07:47:00 CST gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2020/happynewyear.txt eke out a phlog entry, finally, rallying myself to get back into the swing of making things (or at least some facsimile thereof while the dust settles around here, which could take a while). It remains to be seen if I take my own advice, but, hey, you have to start somewhere, right?]]> Not New Year's Resolutions Mon, 23 Dec 2019 14:45:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/resolutions.txt reading list. I know I've been kind of ignoring the phlog lately, and I'm sorry about that. I've been working on the 'tracking my video game' collection website, which kind of turned into a rudimentary content management system, so that's nice, I guess. I also came to a realization over the last few days (though, to be fair, this has been percolating in the back of my head since the beginning of the year) that the Modern Web(tm) is all but a lost cause, and I need to disengage from the worst of it. I lay out my reasoning in a kind of rambly post, but the TL;DR version is that it's not really fun any more, and I'm tired of doing things because I've been doing them for a long time, even though they stopped being fun.]]> Reading list update Wed, 13 Nov 2019 10:45:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/h/readinglist/2019.html reading list (again). I know it doesn't really look like it from this angle, but I've been really busy. After that article I wrote about 'just create something great', I started to get the bug to redesign my office into a Classic Game Cave of sorts and maybe go back to one of my old projects that I never really followed through on: making silly videos about video games. I made a couple for Google Video a million years ago, and I made a few for YouTube, but now that I have more resources at my disposal, I figured I might give it another shot. Plus it gives me an excuse to play some of these games that have been piling up over the years.]]> Just create something great Mon, 30 Sep 2019 13:25:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/justbegreat.txt/ reading list (finally). I've been concentrating on building a studio with the intention of making some videos of some kind or another because it looked like a fun thing to do. I also ran across a bit of information about being successful that, essentially boiled down to "Just create great things", which is so useless that it inspired me to rant for way too many words.]]> Oops I forgot to update Tue, 27 Aug 2019 16:05:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/ Realized a week late that I updated this feed, but I forgot to update the lastBuildDate, so it's possible that nobody noticed. That's what I get for posting updates before I've had my morning coffee*. *I don't drink coffee. Oops I built a website Tue, 20 Aug 2019 07:35:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/oops.txt A few months ago I decided to buy an old deleted domain to keep track of some Nintendo collectibles that I have because I kept accidentally buying duplicates. As I worked on the list, I kept adding more and more features until it dawned on me one day that I had accidentally built a website.

I also updated the reading list. I found a copy of The Elements of Style at my local used book store and decided to see what all the hubbub was about. I'm partway through the book and I still don't know. Maybe it picks up toward the end.]]> Book titles Tue, 9 Jul 2019 16:35:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org:70/1/images/books In July of 2019, the XKCD guy (he's the one that makes stickfigure comics that aren't usually very funny, but get passed around a lot anyway) held a contest for some book that he wrote.

To enter the contest you had to find a bunch of books that you could put in some kind of order such that the titles made a sentence or a story, and whichever one was the 'best' would be the winner and he'd come to your town to promote his book.

I didn't enter, but I thought it was an interesting idea, so I got a few pictures of some books that I thought might fit if I did enter the contest, and posted them here.

wyrm.org Thu, 27 Jun 2019 14:00:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/scopecreep.txt Something like that, anyway. I'm still building it because I'm having fun doing it, which is the best possible reason I can think of to build anything. ]]> Little Updates Fri, 21 Jun 2019 09:25:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/I/images/quotes/sourcery.jpg reading list (finally) and shuffled a few things around. I'm still busily using outdated technology that nobody else likes to build a website that's very likely to only ever be visited by a handful of people (not this one, another one), a.k.a. 'having fun'. ]]> Expired Domains Thu, 13 Jun 2019 11:25:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/thisolddomain.txt in my phlog instead. I also rambled a little bit in response to getting linked to two different websites that demanded that I either give them money or use private mode somewhere else, which got me worked up enough to write about it. ]]> 8 bits of fun Tue, 26 Mar 2019 12:40:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/0/phlog/2019/8bitfun.txt 8bit dot fun and concentrate on other projects for the time being, like this very gopher hole! Your call.]]> History Mon, 11 Mar 2019 13:45:00 CDT gopher://ymodem.org/1/images/oldcomputerstuff reading list. I also was cleaning out an old forgotten file cabinet and found a bunch of old disks, software, manuals, and catalogs from the 90's. I have a soft spot for that 90's computer design aesthetic, so I'm getting some pictures of the treasures I'm finding before they get shipped off to the landfill or the recyclers.

Go for it...]]>
