So, having been in the Apple ecosystem for the longest time (I think around the time OSX was released or not long after) I've had enough of waiting to put real Linux, Emacs and some other critical things on my phone. Ultra portable computers are fun but still too big to fit in my pocket, Foldable phones seemed like the way to go. No doubt Apple will be forced to release a foldable phone soon, but I really doubt they'll also pull all the stops out and open the device to running almost any OS we want. For now I'm definitely not getting out the Apple ecosystem, I love my macbook too much, but so far so good with foldables, I'm productive, enough of the aps I care about work on Android, and I'm loving first class Emacs and Ubuntu. I had to solve the data entry aspect of things too but it is surprisingly easy to find a cheap portable keyboard that will fit in your pocket these days. I honestly don't know enough of the detail to be sure I've opted for a more or less privacy minded device than Google's but I am happy with the OnePlus Open. I'l probably get the Open 2 whenever that comes out. The real test will be whether I write more because my device is with me and data entry is simple enough, we'll see. This post was written on a tiny fold out table on a Boeing 777-300 on the way to New York.
