sparcipx posted about a few  things, including good programs for MSDOS
5[1].  I've  got  to  chime  in with  a  few  recommendations,  in  no
particular order.:

1. HDM IV (hard disk menu) from Jim Hass. I used this years ago, and I
still use it  on any DOS system  that I spend real time  on. It's nice
for systems with games that I set  up for the kids (dead simple). Lots
of features, easy to setup, and light weight.

2. Read util. I used to have "READ.COM" which worked, but now I've got
Bruce Guthrie's 2001  "Read file viewer". Use it to  read through text
files more easily. Faster than opening an editor.

3.  FastLynx  2.0. This  is  a  great serial/parallel  file  transfer 
program. Run it on two PCs to transfer files easily back and forth.   

4. Quick Basic 4.5. Has a compiler. Fun to use.

5. Wordstar. I didn't  use this in the day, but  have since learned to
love it on CP/M. Might be worth a look at the DOS port.

6.  mtcp suite.  A must  have if  you have  networking. IRC  client is
awesome, and runs great  on my 8088. I have a  feeling that the netcat
could be used to roll a gopher client, but haven't played with it in a
while.

7. PC Paint 3.1 by MSC. A good little image editor.

8. Quattro Pro. If you need GUI spreadsheets without Windows, there is
a graphical DOS version that works very well.

9. Bobcat for Lynx and Gopher. Honorable mention.

10. Joan  Riff's "Z80MU PROFESSIONAL"  Z80 and CP/M 2.2  Emulator. For
fun and profit.
