Medium, Cory Doctorow, Mailing List =================================== I deleted my Medium account yesterday. Medium sucks. The funny thing is that I seach for the phrase "medium sucks", and find that many write articles about the reasons Medium sucks. Where do they publish those articles? On Medium! The main reason Medium sucks is the paywall: you click a link to a story you may like, start reading and then see that some lines are faded and that to continue reading you have to become a member and pay a fee. Now, if I paid for membership what would I read there? More on narcissism, maybe? Here's one I used to follow there: Cory Doctorow, author of Enshitification. A good way to read new things written by an author is to follow that author and get e-mails when there are updates. Cory does not add paywalls to his stories. Furthermore, in his stories there are links to the very same story on https://pluralistic.net I want to get updates from there and not from Medium! One way to get the updates is by subscribing to RSS feeds, but not all browser support them. For example, Monocles, my default browser does not: when I try to click "RSS", what I see is an XML file in plain text! Another link: Newsletter. If you subscribed to a newsletter, you'll get updates to your e-mail. The newsletter of Pluralistic is a mailing list. I have subscribed with e-mail. I have also choosen a password. But it seems that I'm not going to log in because I only read and don't publish to the mailing list. The password is sent to me by e-mail in plain-text, so I choose something I barely ever use. Now, I get to my e-mail the very same stories published on Medium and Pluralistic.
